Mark Sajatovich

CANADA

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“Abstract art asks you to make time to contemplate.”

Mark Sajatovich is an abstract artist from Nova Scotia who was inspired by early 20th-century geometric abstractions and the styles of Kandinsky, de Kooning, and Basquiat. He believes in the power of abstracts to teach that in a chaotic world, time and work, and silence is more necessary than ever to understand value.

After living in Alberta for a short time, the broadcasts of the fires that destroyed over two million acres of crops and pastures were painful to watch. “Prairie Fire” is a view of distant fires from an untouched field of wheat.

Self-taught, his study of diverse styles initially centered on the Group of Seven but later expanded to include wildlife artists, folk, and Indigenous artists. Over the years, these influences combined to form a passion for bright color palettes to interpret social issues and historical events.

In the wake of Hurricane Fiona in 2022, numerous power lines were torn from their poles and fell to the ground. While repairs were underway for weeks, live wires were a constant threat that heightened the level of anxiety for residents and visitors alike. As one resident noted, "electricity is in the air."

For the past decade, Sajatovich has explored social and environmental issues through his abstract art and is encouraged by emerging artists brave enough to express fresh voices to express their true vision of reality. As de Kooning said, "What you do when you paint, you take a brush full of paint, get paint on the picture, and you have faith."

“My interpretation of the world is laid out on the canvases that line my studio walls.”

In this way, the work of each abstract artist serves as an antidote to the information overload and the deafening arguments of contrary, confused opinions fighting for real estate in our minds. His works attempt to present clear and impactful pieces of abstract expressionism that incorporate techniques that emphasize the energy and immediacy of his themes.

For years, Sajatovich has viewed the process of painting abstracts as an opportunity for artists. It helps artists to use their creative filters to allow their subconscious to unburden themselves from a buildup of clutter by selectively organizing it all on the canvas. Artists from 21st-century still have the opportunity to demonstrate how art is more than ever, a healthy outlet for creative intuition to take over and lay bare the day's stimuli in a rainbow of colors, lines, and forms from which we can align a better balance and unity to reflect upon and contemplate how to move forward in art and in life.

“I work in abstracts because abstract artists have an opportunity to exercise their freedom of expression with every brush stroke and there is a value to invite audiences to exercise their critical thinking skills with each piece.”

“I believe that the best outcome is that every new abstract piece challenges and inspires the viewers to open their minds. So that their search for its meaning blazes new horizons and uncharted paths through which they may discover countless interpretations and answers to the question of; What do I see?”

Sajatovich has always selected brushes as his tool of choice to relieve pressure from the constant chore of prioritizing, deflecting, or simply making sense of the volume of assaults from the internet, televised talking heads, and social media trolls that add to the clutter of daily life. It's not uncommon for them to hang for days until the meaning of each individual piece becomes clear and can be completed. Art is an act of faith that the meaning of each painting will reveal itself to him.

"Traffic" is a depiction of the challenges to our overcrowded cities. We flow through the veins and arteries of each metropolis as planners reimagine the possibilities of every corner and every traffic light for the future.

For Sajatovich, art teaches us the value of critical thought and there is no doubt that the world is in need of rational, analytical, critical thinking. Interestingly, his first steps with art began decades ago and taught him that developing his process of making art permitted him the freedom of expression to create independently, on his own terms. Sajatovich views his catalog as an invitation to his new audience to use his works of abstract expression as a series of opportunities to revisit their personal preferences, reflect on their priorities and open their mind to consider new interpretations from the fresh eyes of a new artist.

Homeless numbers have grown and the housing crisis has taken hold. “Rust” represents a corroded, out-of-date blueprint for traditional attitudes towards solving the housing crisis and helping the homeless.

Ultimately, his views are important to understanding his art because Sajatovich has always believed art to do more than replicate a camera lens. In this sense, the artist is a storyteller, employing imagination for the benefit of the audience. A catalyst. There is great value in sparking a conversation between an audience and an artist in which original perceptions are captured in oil or acrylic bringing inspiration, hope, and perhaps new visions for the future.

Throughout the 2020's, the tension between nature and the encroaching stain of the urban footprint has grown. The abstract painting "Final Forest." is an interpretation of this conflict as the urban landscape assaults the natural environment in this sketched-out campaign.

“For me, a lifelong study of art merged into my museum career when I was hired to design digital marketing campaigns, and advertisements and serve as an art director on museum marketing and tourism campaigns. A career and a young family meant less time for painting until a decade later, when a rediscovery of Canadian folk and indigenous art returned my focus from digital art to acrylic on canvas.”

As the Covid epidemic swept across the world in 2021, it became more important and more challenging, to find inspiration in a world where the death toll had taken over the media. In the midst of the bleakness, I read Leonard Cohen, “There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in.” This piece was painted quickly thereafter and is the first of two paintings dedicated to Leonard Cohen.

For Sajatovich, a lifelong study of art merged into his museum career when he was hired to design digital marketing campaigns, advertisements and serve as an art director on museum marketing and tourism campaigns. A career and a young family meant less time for painting until a decade later, when a rediscovery of Canadian folk and indigenous art returned his focus from digital art to acrylic on canvas. During the years of the pandemic, new artists and online art galleries were thriving and by 2022, Sajatovich had produced a large volume of new work and was convinced that feedback from fresh eyes and international perspectives would broaden his scope.

With every passing day, privacy, solitude and silence are threatened more and more. “Tracks” is an interpretation of how the footprints of each succeeding generation have grown and how vast spaces have become parking lots.

During the early summer of 2023, southern Nova Scotia experienced the worst wild fires in its history. As the flames swept through the province from Shelburne to Halifax and beyond, the number of residents forced to leave their homes grew by the hour. Tragic stories told by those who lost their homes and businesses were heartbreaking and served as a reminder to everyone not yet facing the fires that their fates could be decided by a strong gale.

“The goal should not be to record events, but to convey fresh perspectives, to interpret and comment using colors and shapes, lines and forms to reflect lifestyles and emotions from a more personal lens.”
