Wen Liu

CHINA

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“At the heart of my practice lies a fascination with the fluidity of boundaries and the transformative power of transition.”

Through her sculptures, Wen Liu creates forms that blur the lines between solidity and fluidity, inviting viewers to explore the intersection of different states of being. Each piece embodies a narrative of change, symbolizing the liminality inherent in the existence of beings.

Have you seen the Sun?
Yes, I did.

In the abyss of night, a dance begins,
The Sun emerges, red and alive,
Twisting, coiling, in vibrant hues,
Of yellow, green, and blues that dive.

On blackened canvases, they surge,
Echoes of Heidegger's Being,
Each ray a bridge in liminal space,
Where presence and void are weaving.

In her works, the artist strives to capture the ephemeral nature of liminal space, using color, texture, and composition to convey a sense of ambiguity and uncertainty. These works serve as windows into alternate realities, where the familiar and the unfamiliar converge in a mesmerizing dance of light and shadow.

A tapestry of light and dark,
Old tales of Dao and the nameless sage,
A whisper of freedom in the marks,
A journey written on the page.

Through layers thick with history’s trace,
Ceramic echoes, smooth and bright,
Nature’s forms in digital grace,
Between the shadows, there is light.

Laozi, in the ‘Tao Te Ching,’ mentions, ‘Do nothing, and nothing is left undone,’ a profound insight into the nature of life and the universe. This principle informs her artistic process, where spontaneity and intuition play crucial roles. Her aim is to create works that feel organic and uncontrived, allowing them to unfold naturally.

“Philosophically, my work resonates deeply with Heidegger's concept of ‘being’ and Laozi's principles of ‘wu wei’ (non-action) and Dao.”

Heidegger, in ‘Being and Time,’ explores the essence of existence, emphasizing the complex relationship humans have with time, space, and others through the concept of ‘Dasein.’ His notion of ‘authenticity’ encourages the pursuit of deeper self-understanding and existential meaning.

Communal threads of past and place,
A shared path through time we tread,
In each sun, the stories trace,
Connections woven, spirits led.

So in these suns, see not just light,
But life’s embrace, a fleeting flight,
In abstract forms, our souls ignite,
Through art, through space, we unite.

Mom said,
"Don’t share your joys,
For envy shadows every light,
And they’ll despise your rise."

Fearful, I held my happiness tight,
Yet couldn’t curb my need to share.
So to everyone, I spoke of woes,
Unloading my tales of despair.

Sometimes, after my tale was spun,
I pitied the listener’s heavy heart,
Bound to my endless streak of gloom,
Unable to see my brighter part.

I sympathized with their silent plight,
Enduring my misfortunes, night after night.

This philosophical framework resonates with Wen Liu’s exploration of liminality, as both concepts delve into the essence of being and the search for authenticity. The artist’s works invite viewers to reflect on their own existence, encouraging them to embrace the uncertainties and transformations that define their lives.

“My artistic exploration revolves around the captivating concept of liminal space—a threshold between the known and the unknown, the tangible and the intangible.”

“This evocative realm is where I merge various disciplines, including ceramics, sculpture, and painting, to craft immersive experiences that challenge perceptions and evoke contemplation.”

Zhuangzi's Daoist philosophy, with its pursuit of nature and freedom, reminds a person not to be bound by external fame and fortune. Instead, it advocates for a life of simplicity and spontaneity, aligned with the natural world. This philosophy underpins Wen Liu’s artistic approach, where she seeks to create works that resonate with the rhythms of nature and the fluidity of life. By embracing the principles of Dao, she aims to capture the transient beauty of liminal spaces, where every moment is fleeting yet infinitely significant.

Reading and reflecting on the works of literary and philosophical masters have guided Wen Liu into broader realms of thought, enriching her artistic practice with deeper layers of meaning. Her art is a testament to this ongoing journey, an exploration of the spaces in between where change and possibility reside.

Black meets face, red blends in blur,
Love surges strong, a heart's allure.

Black like the night, silently descends,
Faces akin to moon, silver sheen extends.
Red hues vivid, illuminating deep inside,
Love's nourishment, in eyes abide.

By creating environments that blur the boundaries between art and life, Wen Liu hopes to foster a deeper connection between viewers and the transformative power of liminal spaces. By doing so, she aims to create a space where contemplation and introspection can lead to profound personal and collective insights, enriching the understanding of oneself and the world them.

Blurred boundaries, love's fervor strong,
Black and red, passion's song.
Love in hearts, beats ceaseless roar,
Flushed faces, love evermore.

Through the haze of uncertainty, love remains,
Boundless and true, despite the stains.
In the flush of cheeks, the silent plea,
Love's eternal dance, for all to see.

“My art is an invitation to journey into the unknown, to find beauty in uncertainty, and to embrace the ever-present possibility of transformation.”
