Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“My work is based on my vision, my dreams and my reality, as I perceive it, I never know what any artwork holds after it is finished as they flow together with my emotions, feelings, and character through the different periods of my life.”

SOFIE BUTSKHRIKIDZE (PITANIUS) was born in 1986 in Tbilisi, Georgia. She currently resides in New York City. She has been drawing since she can remember, and she always knew she wanted to become a professional artist.

The artwork represents emotion, which sometimes is impossible to show when it's there and this is the maximum we are capable to show.

In 2003 she got enrolled at the Fashion Design and Fine Arts faculty of the State Academy of Arts in Tbilisi, Georgia. At the same time, she also taught art for kids at a local art studio.

The artwork represents memories, how we are dealing with them, and staying strong no matter what.

In 2006, she took one year off studying, and she moved to London, where she was creating handmade accessories based on her inspirations. Upon returning home she continued her studies and at the same time, she began working as a set designer and makeup artist at a theatre.

“Depending on the piece, I sometimes incorporate using and mixing different media, like gouache, acrylic, tempera, charcoal, pastel, and oils.”

In 2008, she graduated from the Academy of Arts. Her final dissertation ‘’Immortal Mohegan’’ was inspired by her lifelong admiration for Native American Indians. It was a great success, and the exhibition itself had a lot of publicity and media coverage. Towards the end of 2008, she travelled to Marrakech, Morocco for pottery training, learning the native clay techniques, and having a small exhibition.

“My artworks are based on vision, dreams, and reality how I perceive them. I never know what any artwork holds after it is finished as they flow together with my emotions, feelings, and change along with periods of my life.”

In 2009, she went to Amsterdam and started working at an art gallery. For the next five months, she was preparing artworks for the exhibition ‘’Dionaea Muscipula’’ working in oil and acrylic on cardboard. She felt like she needed huge cardboard to express herself, her thoughts and feelings, and plenty of colors.

The artwork represents, fear and nightmare when we have them and describes feeling itself.

“I fell in love with drawing ornaments while still in my first year at the Academy. It was my language, thoughts that I could talk to others without words. My ornaments became the narratives of my stories, pain, disappointment, joy, dreams, beautiful and at the times ugly reality.”

The artwork represents two people, their life, differences, and capability to existing.

A couple of months later after returning to Tbilisi, she figured out that something had changed. She realized that she could not work with colors anymore and this is how her journey with ink art started.

The artwork represents all people and all the world together, times when we were fighting a biological war.

In 2012, she participated in the group exhibition ‘’Dual Verse’, at the national parliamentary library of Georgia. It was a two-person exhibition that included paintings and drawings. The idea was to show that different techniques and styles could express similar ideas, feelings, and visions.

The artwork represents a beautiful creature as a human being. Sometimes we can be more fragile than we thought.

In 2013, she went to New York for a couple of days and fell in love with the city straight away. After having visited many countries around the world, she thought that she had found a place where she wanted to live and to create. In 2015 she moved to New York permanently.

The artwork represents our goals and all those barriers we come to cross during our journey.

“I used Japanese ink and a fountain pen. I loved the fact that I could control the thickness of each line to get exactly what I wanted. I have never used a regular ink pen as it feels too simple and deprived of depth.”

The artwork represents just a pure feeling.

The artwork represents certain emotions in a specific moment when everyone around you wants to see you just positive when reality doesn't give you that emotion but makes you a terrific actor to hide real emotions and be acceptable by society. why do we care that much?

The artwork represents a person who's finding different ways to deal with the past.

She participated in several exhibitions and most recently at the London Art Biennale 2021 in July where she presented her artwork ‘’MIDNIGHT DREAM’’, also in October at the group exhibition in London ''UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE IV'' where she presented her artwork ''MIDNIGHT DREAM'' and two prints ''SMILE" and "MAGICAL REALISM" and after that, she participated in December RED DOT MIAMI art week where she presented her artworks ''BIOLOGICAL WAR'' and "SILK''.

The artwork represents peace and balance between the dark and the light.

“The material that I use varies as well and ranges from chalk paper, canvas, wooden panel, or metal.”
