Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“For decades, I combined my work with my painting which was not always easy as they are completely different worlds but for the last five years, I have been painting fulltime.”

Danielle Brits was born in Brussels in 1957. She graduated from the Saint Lukas Institute, Art School in Brussels, where she studied visual arts and painting. After her art education and because it is not easy to obtain sufficient income as a starting artist, she followed additional studies and started a career in the pharmaceutical industry, more specifically in clinical trials.

Statue of a woman. Her body has already turned to stone, half of her face is still of a living woman.

As a toddler she was already making drawings and paintings, mostly of cartoon figures she saw on TV. From an early age, she felt an enormous fascination for Magical Realism and Surrealism and this fascination has gradually extended to her paintings.

Old Mansion. Spirit of one of the former inhabitants still wandering about.

With her earlier works she was regularly told that her work was too reminiscent of the paintings by Delvaux and Magritte, but over the years she has managed to develop her own style within surrealism. The viewer ends up in a dreamlike, alienating, and enigmatic world.

“I am exploring the forces of the unconscious; my inspirations are certainly romantic.”

Her narrative and figurative painting is imbued with romanticism and surrealism. Her paintings offer the spectators the opportunity to penetrate the fantasy world of the artist.

“I draw inspiration from travels, photographs, paintings, dreams, and even nature and daily life scenes.”

What she depicts in her paintings is not always true to nature, she gives her own impression and perception. Perception is not always what you see, it’s how you explain yourself what you see.

Lying down in the forest. Hearing the wind rustling in the trees, the leaves that fall in utter silence, so we feel complete serene.

“Being able to express myself through my paintings is essential in my life to be happy and face my problems. It’s like a therapy for me.”

The characters she depicts, living or undead, earthly or fairy, dwell in her animist and whispering forests. The old mansions are painted with a cold and bluish palette, where nature seems to regain its kingdom: we are into the aesthetics of ruins. The spirit of the forest may take many forms: a peaceful face, a solemn deer, or a biblical angel.

The Past, The Present, and The Future are all connected

Her visions may appear uncanny or melancholic, but at the same time she offers us images of sweetness, welcoming us to her imagination: a home and a shelter from the unkindness of daily life. Text by Pablo Avendano Chàvarri – Art Curator at Balthasar Brussels Gallery.

Nothing Is What It Seems

For several years, and before she started to participate in exhibitions, she sold her paintings directly to customers. Since then, she has had several exhibitions both in Brussels and Antwerp. She currently resides and works in Antwerp (Flanders – Belgium).

Everyone Has An Guardian Angel

“Exploring daydreams and the passing of time, I paint delightful and enigmatic pictures.”

Ancient Mirrors reflect quite a lot.

“My paintings are inhabited by manifestations of the sacred or profane, they follow with resolution a mystical quest.”
