To be honest, I have the utmost respect for Gen Z, even though I do not always fully understand every aspect of their thinking or worldview.
However, in many ways, I have confidence that they will be far better custodians of our planet than my generation ever managed to be.
They seem to outcompete earlier generations in many important areas: they are more inclusive, more open-minded, more technologically fluent, more environmentally conscious, and deeply aware of social change. Of course, this does not apply to every single person in Gen Z, just as no generalization applies perfectly to any group of people.
That said, one area where I feel Gen Z could benefit is by drawing more consciously from the lived experiences — both good and bad — of the generations before them. Human culture itself grew, in part, from sitting around fires and listening to elders share myths, warnings, mistakes, and truths. That transfer of memory helped shape human society and, in many ways, contributed to the extraordinary expansion of human thought.
So while I deeply admire Gen Z’s energy, values, and vision, I also believe there is great value in combining that forward-looking mindset with the hard-earned lessons of previous generations.
That balance could help them avoid certain pitfalls while building a better future.
