Before You Become an Artist, Read This!
Any artist knows that certain struggles come from being an artist. But this is especially true for the set of problems that come with being new to being an artist. For a newbie artist or creative person in the industry, there are a number of hurdles to overcome. Trolls feed the art you post online into AI to mock you or one-up you, other artists copy or steal your work, the algorithm never seems to favor you and even shadow-bans some of your accounts, and the obsession with like count gets to your head. There’s an infinite number of things to get bogged down in.
This isn’t even to start on the current political atmosphere, which is so negative right now. It’s hard to stop doomscrolling long enough to create anything. There’s not much motivation to create in a world that seems fueled by so much hate and toxicity.
I remind you: this is why we create. All art serves a purpose. Be it to serve as an escapist fantasy or to hold up a mirror to show the ugliness of today, all art is a reflection of the society we live in. No art exists in a vacuum – it all serves a purpose, even though it might not be easy to detect at first glance.
It’s especially important for new artists to push through these barriers and create. Humans are meant for creation as bees are meant to make honey. It comes naturally to us, like breathing air. Your creations matter and deserve to be seen and acknowledged. So continue to overcome those obstacles and keep creating. You have a unique voice, and each work you create brings something new to the table. We are each our own modern Prometheus, bringing fire to the masses in the form of what we make, and each of us in turn has their own set of problems, their own eagle eating their liver. In a world of uncaring gods and titans, continue to be the voice that speaks out: keep creating.
