Five Mistakes To Avoid If You Wish To Start A Company

Everyone is still on their journey, and that's perfectly fine. But first, here's what not to do.

Before you start a company, stop doing these things.

Everyone is eager to tell you how to build a company. But, very few will tell you how they nearly didn’t. Failure, in that sense, is a far more honest teacher. To build something that lasts, you must be willing to look at the wreckage of others' mistakes so you don’t repeat them. Remember: you will fail, but failing smart is the ultimate competitive advantage.

First, stop procrastinating under the guise of "planning." You do not need to know everything before you take the first step. If you wait until you are an expert, you’ve already lost. When I founded TERAVARNA, I didn’t know the first thing about web development, but I didn't wait for a degree; I learned it because I had to. Think of the idea as a first step and kill the "blank canvas" syndrome by simply making the first stroke. Trust yourself to figure out the rest in the process.

Do not wait for your idea to mature into perfection, or for others to understand it before you act. Opportunities have expiration dates. Ideas are often born out of a specific moment — a market gap that will not remain empty forever. TERAVARNA emerged when the world was confined, seeking connection through digital means. Had I waited for clarity, or consensus, it may have belonged to someone else. Some ideas are not timeless — they are timely.

Do not choose a name that distances you from your own audience. A name must carry intimacy, but not confusion. In an era of data oversaturation, your brand must be personal enough to have relatability, yet simple enough to be spelled on the first try. It should feel like it belongs to you, yet be accessible enough to be remembered, searched, and spoken — without requiring a spelling bee.

Do not fracture your identity across platforms. Branding is about relentless consistency. If your name or aesthetic shifts across different platforms, you will be invisible. To establish an unbreakable brand, you must show up with the same face everywhere. Make your business easy to find and impossible to forget.

Finally, do not think in fragments of the short term. If you believe in the idea enough to begin, believe in it enough to formalize it. Don’t push off the "boring" stuff like legalities and tax registrations. In the US, registering a business is faster than making instant noodles, so sort the paperwork, secure your foundation, and stop treating your business like a hobby.

Trust yourself and watch yourself prosper.
