Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

"We are just like the sand in an hourglass as time passes by."

Since Yoyo started creating art, the artist has never stopped exploring the relationship between my art and myself, thus getting authentic looks from the artworks created.

"The whole project is based on a mythical story from my imagination, which is about two deities: The Daylight and The Night, who control the passage of time and collect people's life stories after they die.  This story is based on my own beliefs and concerns about the quick elapsing of time. What are we looking for in our lives? What are we after, day and night? struggling with whether our time is used effectively or wasted. Do we have any regrets about reflecting on our vanity?"

To make those ideas into actual artworks. I use all kinds of skills, including oil painting skills and sculpting skills such as 3D modeling, clay modeling, mold making, casting, glazing, and firing kilns. I also use jewelry-making skills such as wax carving, bronze casting, metal fabrication, soldering, forming, etc. I also explore the possibilities of combining different materials, such as oil paint on bronze, ceramic with fabric, clay, and metal.

This project also explores the relationship between an individual and the world. In my view, we are just like the sand in an hourglass, but each individual's life has its own significance, and our stories are the proof of our existence. Even though we might not be that unique, we inherit and build upon our culture and history.

In terms of personal creation, my Chinese cultural background deeply affects my art. All my artistic figures’ appearances are inspired by the Chinese Buddhas and traditional imagery of Chinese ghosts and monsters. When I was a child, my parents took me to visit a lot of cultural monuments all over China.

“In my opinion, all artists tell their stories in different and diverse ways.”

I will never forget the shock I felt when I first saw those treasures of ancient Chinese art.

Through these two main figures I designed, The Daylight and The Night, which are made of bronze. Oil paint and coloring skills helped me create a gradually varied color on the bronze's surface. I also designed different crowns, weapons, and clothes for those two dolls to portray their identities.

Those creatures created in the dark are nothing but carriers of our fear of darkness.

Even if those memories from childhood have been blurred for a long time and are like dreams as I grow up, During my college studies, I visited more of the caves, murals, sculptures, and temple ruins all over China again with my instructors and classmates. I seem to have the illusion that a dream becomes a reality. After that, my artistic creation began to gradually show those influences.

"I use jewelry-making skills such as wax carving, bronze casting, metal fabrication, soldering, forming, etc., where I explore the possibilities of combining different materials such as oil paint on bronze, ceramic with fabric, clay, and metal."

"I’m now using digital sculptures as part of my creative process. I am curious if the combination of new technology and traditional skills will bring me more possibilities. In my future creations, gradually more and more characters will be incorporated into my projects, thus highlighting the human part of my concept. I hope that will culminate in potent imagery reflective of the human spirit. All my characters will be based on real-life events and the mythical stories in my head."

I investigate the relationship between the individual and the world. When I was visiting those monuments, I closed my eyes to feel it, as if I could see those busy figures. Those figures are so small, in sharp contrast with those magnificent relics. In my view, we are just like the sand in an hourglass as time passes by.

Buried In Time_The Bones (bricks) | Ceramics

$100

Through historical records, those who have distinguished themselves have had the opportunity to go down in history, but many more have devoted their lives in silence. For instance, those people who built the Great Wall, which spanned thousands of years before it was built to make it look like it does today. When I look at the wall, brick by brick, each seems to be inhabited by souls.

However, I believe everyone’s life has its significance, and our stories are the proof of our existence. Even though we might not be that unique, we inherit and build upon our culture and history. There are people, and there are cultures. There are people; there are nations. There are people, and there are histories. There are people, and there are stories. In myths, gods create people, but gods are created by people.

Inspired by those ancient crumbling graves with old bones buried in them, the layers of textures formed by the accumulation of time. I want to show such visual effects in my project. Then, I anthropomorphize my emotions and bury them in my sculptures as traces of my existence. All the characters are based on ancient Chinese imagery of ghosts, gods, and Buddhas.

Coupled with being inspired by various ancient Chinese myths since I was little, after growing up, I began to think about incorporating the Chinese culture and my experience as the storyline and concept into my art. In my opinion, all artists are telling stories in different and diverse ways.

Under masks, when we pass by people in the streets and lanes, the only thing that can convey information is people's eyes.

Unable to observe the full emotions of people; some people complain that the world is becoming more and more isolated, and occasionally meeting people we know, they may hesitate to say hello.

After the Day N’ Night project, I started to use digital sculptures as part of my creative process. I am curious if the combination of new technology and traditional skills will bring me more possibilities. In my future creations, gradually more and more characters will be incorporated into my projects, thus highlighting the human part of my concept.

Some people are fortunate to have masks, so they feel more comfortable in public.
