Victoria Friends

USA

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“Every hero needs a faithful steed. Mine was a horse named Joe, always ready for the next adventure.”

Picture a mountainside outside Missoula, Montana, and a band of children charging through the trees, swords clashing in an epic battle. A troll lurks beneath a bridge that exists only in their minds. Deeper in the forest, a towering castle waits for a daring rescue. One of those children was Victoria Friends. She spent much of her childhood in that rugged country, roaming the woods freely with her siblings and turning the wilderness into whatever the day's game called for. Anyone who has seen Bridge to Terabithia will recognize the magic of those years, when an ordinary stretch of forest could become an entire kingdom and nobody needed permission to believe in it. The mountains gave her room to wander. Her imagination took care of everything else.

One painting in the “Flow” series, “Solace Fountain,” depicts a young woman enveloped in a fountain of water beneath a transforming, light-filled sky. This work evokes a sense of renewal and inner peace, suggesting the restorative power of both nature and Spirit.

What happens to a childhood like that? In Victoria's case, it turned into a way of painting. Storytelling sits at the center of her art, alongside a lifelong love of imagination and the natural world, and the instincts she sharpened in those Montana forests still guide how she approaches every new piece. Connection shows that storyteller's eye at work. The painting portrays a young man deeply attuned to the nature around him, and it reads like a single page lifted from a much longer tale. Past the edges of the canvas lies the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Here, away from all of it, he has found a measure of peace and a way to feel grounded in himself again. How he arrived, and what he will carry home with him, are left for each viewer to imagine.

Another piece in the “Flow” series, “Nourishing Flow,” portrays flowers sustained by water descending from above. Gentle droplets appear to nurture and replenish them, bringing vibrancy, radiance, and life to their form. This painting reflects the subtle yet profound ways in which unseen forces can foster growth and transformation.

“Other people saw an artist in me before I ever did. It took me a while to catch up.”

Creativity has been part of Victoria's everyday life for as long as she can remember, and growing up did nothing to dim it. A dreamer at heart, she carried it straight into adulthood and kept it close through the full, demanding years of co-raising and homeschooling four children. During that season her home doubled as a classroom, and most of her days went toward helping young minds learn and grow. Her creative life kept pace with all of it, finding its place in the daily rhythm of lessons and the endless small needs of a busy family. That chapter left a lasting mark on her as an artist. Teaching four children at home asks for patience, generosity, and real delight in watching someone make a new discovery, and that same spirit gives her paintings their warmth. They welcome people in, the way a good home does.

Illuminating Waters | Mixed Media

Illuminating Waters | Mixed Media

A woman immersed in quiet waters, as if becoming one with the ocean. She takes on a glow.

Acrylic paint and mixed media are Victoria's chosen materials, and with them she works in the meeting ground between abstract expression and realism. Recognizable forms anchor her compositions, whether a woman, a bird, or a stand of trees. Around them, color, texture, and imagination are allowed to move freely, and the image loosens into something felt as much as seen. Illuminating Waters captures that balance at its most poetic. A woman is immersed in quiet water, and she appears to merge with the ocean itself, taking on a glow as the line between figure and sea gives way. Rejuvenating Forest holds a similar tension. On its surface the painting is about renewal and fresh beginnings, told with an easy simplicity, yet deeper mysteries wait underneath for anyone who keeps looking. Victoria considers it the perfect piece for a mantel, the kind of painting a person never tires of seeing.

“Wisdom Flows” features a blue heron standing calmly in a pool of water, grounded and still while metaphorical spiritual wind currents move around it. The blue heron symbolizes wisdom, patience, and intuition, qualities that encourage self-reflection and personal growth. Encounters with blue herons at my pond have often served as meaningful reminders of strength and resilience during challenging times.

“Being recognized for my work means a great deal, and I'm grateful every time it happens. But the real reward comes long before anyone sees a painting, in those hours at the easel when I'm still figuring it out.”

Solo Artist

“Somewhere along the way, a lot of grown-ups stop expecting to be amazed. Life fills up, the days start to blur together, and the curious kid inside us goes quiet. That kid never really leaves, though. I paint for that part of people. Art has a gift for calming a busy mind, and it can wake up an imagination that's been asleep for years. I want my work to do both at once. When someone stops in front of one of my paintings, I hope the noise in their head settles, even for a minute, and something in them starts asking questions again, the way it did when they were small and anything seemed possible. If they head back out into the world a little calmer and a little more curious than when they walked in, then that painting has done exactly what I made it to do.”

Connection | Acrylic

Connection | Acrylic

$333

16" x 20"

“Connection” depicts a young man observing a deep connection with nature. With the hustle and bustle of the world around us, we can find peace in places of nature, and in this place, we can find grounding in ourselves.

Blue herons visit the pond at Victoria's home, and over the years their visits have become deeply meaningful to her. Through challenging times, the sight of a heron holding perfectly still has often reminded her of her own strength and resilience. Wisdom Flows grew out of those encounters. In it, a blue heron stands calmly in a pool of water while spiritual currents of wind move all around it, a picture of wisdom, patience, and intuition staying steady when everything else is in motion. Wildlife appears throughout her portfolio, along with organic forms and natural landscapes, and her creatures often hold a larger meaning. A white horse in Abundance symbolizes the divine and the hope it takes to run the race of life. In Pure Legacy, a peacock turns attention to what each generation leaves behind, and to the purity of what is passed on to those who come next.

Heaven's Call | Acrylic

“Heaven's Call” is a part of my “Spirit” series. This is representative of my fascination with the angelic and other heavenly beings.

Some of what Victoria paints cannot be seen with the eyes at all. Dreams and intuition shape much of her imagery, and she is drawn to the mysterious connections between humanity and the unseen world around us. The resulting compositions feel grounded and otherworldly at once, familiar enough to recognize yet strange enough to linger in the mind long after the first glance. Her Spirit series explores this territory most openly. Heaven's Call reflects her fascination with angels and other heavenly beings. Spirit Comfort addresses a need that almost everyone meets eventually, the longing for supernatural comfort, especially in times of loss. Neither painting offers easy answers. Each opens a space where the physical world and the mysteries beyond it can meet, and where anyone carrying grief or unanswered questions might find a moment of rest.

“Spirit Comfort” is a part of my “Spirit” collection. It represents our need for supernatural comfort, especially during loss.

There is a healing quality in Victoria's art that sets it apart, and it runs through her colors, her themes, and her imagery alike. Her Flow series brings that quality to the surface, with water returning again and again as a source of renewal. Solace Fountain surrounds a young woman with a fountain of water beneath a transforming sky filled with light. The scene carries a deep sense of inner peace and draws on the restorative power of both nature and Spirit. In Nourishing Flow, gentle droplets descend from above onto a group of flowers, replenishing each bloom until it glows with fresh life and radiance. The change in that painting is gradual, almost invisible, which is how real growth so often happens. Unseen forces do their work without fanfare, and something ordinary becomes luminous.

“Beauty has a habit of hiding where nobody thinks to look, and I've never been able to resist going to find it.”

More than thirty years have passed since Victoria received her formal art training, and the learning has never stopped. Most of her development since then has been self-directed. Workshops, online courses, open-ended experimentation, and years of dedicated practice have each played a part, steadily expanding her technical skills along with her artistic perspective. A commitment to growth that strong eventually needs somewhere to go, and in her case it led to teaching. Today she leads workshops and offers private instruction, sharing what she has gathered with fellow artists. Because she found so much of her own way independently, she understands that every artist develops at a different pace and along a different path. That understanding shapes the way she teaches. Her goal is to help each student discover a creative voice that belongs entirely to them, and then to strengthen it until their work sounds like no one else's.

Abundance | Acrylic

$725

28" x 22"

Horses often symbolize strength, power, and authority, and a white horse often symbolizes the divine. This painting speaks to our connection to the divine as we run the race of life, with hope and the potential for abundance in our future.

Lately, Victoria has been giving her animals colors nature never gave them. Her newest work places wildlife in unexpected, unconventional palettes, a challenge she has deliberately set for herself to move beyond her usual approaches and see what else her painting can do. The result is a new look at creatures most people assume they already know. The experiment comes from an artist whose work has already found its audience. Her paintings have been featured in online galleries, art fairs, exhibitions, and local retail spaces, and she has received awards for her artistic achievements. Success of that kind can tempt a painter to keep repeating whatever has worked. Victoria has chosen the opposite direction, treating each canvas as a chance to explore new ground. Her art is constantly evolving, driven by a readiness to experiment, to learn, and to welcome change.

This painting represents newness and a fresh start in life. Many times, we need that perfect piece to place on our mantel that we never get tired of looking at. This is that one! It holds deep mysteries but seems simple at the same time.

Rejuvenating Forest | Mixed Media

Rejuvenating Forest | Mixed Media

30" x 40"

Today, life has come full circle. The girl who once ran wild in the Montana mountains now lives in a rustic log cabin in the woods of Grand Blanc, Michigan, with her husband, two dogs, Mia and Gus, and a delightfully moody cat named Tuxedo. When she steps away from the easel, there is usually an iced coffee close at hand. Her bookshelf says a lot about her. Science fiction and fantasy novels take her to distant worlds and impossible quests, while practical how-to books satisfy a more hands-on interest in how things actually work. The dreamer and the maker live comfortably together in her, and both of them find their way into her paintings. Surrounded by trees once more, she has landed right back where her story started, with a lifetime of memories to draw from and plenty of new ones still to come.

A peacock often represents legacy and pride in what we leave behind. This painting represents the purity of what we are leaving behind for future generations.

“I love my garden, so when I tell people to stop and smell the roses, I mean it quite literally.”
