Tina Periquet

PHILIPPINES

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“Each of the canvases is a window into a world shaped by my experience, values, and memories.”

The right balance is not half-light, which turns things gray, but a play of brilliant light and deep shadow, which transforms blank walls into patterned canvases and empty rooms into poetic spaces.

Cold Spring Morning in Saint-Emilion | Oil

$2,500

24 X 20

Merit Prize Award, 5th "Landscapes" Competition, TERAVARNA.

On a wine-tasting tour, I saw this grassy scene along the road, against a misty, saturated sky. The field of green and pale ochre, heavy with dew, made me long for my easel and palette, but all I had was an iPhone. In the end, it served its purpose.

Born in New York but bred in Manila, Tina developed a hybrid world view, shaped by a convent school education, a well-stocked library, travel, and focused learning.

Kyoto Pastoral Scene | Oil

$1,800

20 X 16

Honorable Mention, 5th "Landscapes" Competition, TERAVARNA.

As the last cherry blossoms wither, a new flowering begins, with the equally lovely yet lesser-sung wisteria decorating the hills of Kyoto in bright patches of carmine, pink, and lavender.

To discipline her intuitive but wandering mind, she pursued an MBA at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business and then moved to New York, where she earned an MS in Interior Design from Pratt Institute. She trained for two years as a lighting designer, then acquired experience in interior design, working in residential and corporate environments.

"My paintings reflect the same values expressed in my designs, like order, unity, and harmony, as my aim is the same in both: to stir the senses, calm the spirit, and move the soul."

Back in Manila, she set up a design firm, Periquet Galicia, which has since garnered national and international awards and recognition for residential and public space design, including the interior design of the Philippine National Museum of Natural History.

Morning at the Jaipur Flower Market | Oil

$4,000

30 X 24

Best in Show, "All Color" Juried Art Competition, 2021, Contemporary Art Gallery Online.

This picturesque scene in Rajasthan captures some of the wonderfully vibrant hues that made an early morning stroll memorable.

During those periods of enforced solitude, we were made mindful that life is a wondrous but finite gift, precious and precarious, its ending uncertain yet certain. We learned to take our time rather than spend or waste it, to sip our tea rather than gulp it down. And so I gave myself time to paint at last, luxuriating in slow afternoons with only my easel for company.

$1,800

In 2016, she was honored with the Outstanding Professional of the Year award by the Philippine Professional Registration Commission.

“My approach to life, art, and design is consistent: first, define the essential nature of a subject; then, work to resolve any conflicts, until a sense of harmonious unity prevails.”

"As a designer, I envision an alternative reality and flesh it out, sculpting space into form and painting with light and shade, until reality merges with my vision. As a painter, I strive to reflect my perception of reality using brush and pigment until a new space takes shape within the flat plane of the canvas."

In early 2017, she was invited to join a sketching session with a group of artists, the Visual Artists Guild. The experience was transformative.

Merienda | Oil

$1,800

20 X 16

Merienda is a light afternoon meal. In the Philippines, pan de sal and a cup of hot chocolate are a favorite combination, usually eaten with friends. I wanted to capture a sense of the solitude and stillness that pervaded during the time we all stayed home alone.

In 2021, she entered her first juried art competition, the Contemporary Art Gallery Online "All Colors" competition, and won Best in Show for her genre painting, "Morning at the Jaipur Flower Market."

After the Walk | Oil

$1,600

20 X 16

I find I have neither the personality nor the patience for hyperrealism, with its intense focus on details and emphasis on exquisite craftsmanship. What I seek is to be found not in precision but in ambiguity—an expressive brushstroke, a layering of overtones, a judiciously placed highlight—which somehow does more to capture those fleeting, magical moments that linger longest in the memory.

She became a regular member of the guild but soon was back in New York, this time enrolled at the Art Students League, where she studied drawing, portraiture, abstract composition, and anatomical studies. The following summer, she held her first solo exhibition, "At the Solstice."

This painting is meant to be a large window overlooking a medieval fortified stronghold known as the Old City of Acre, which the Crusaders built over an ancient Roman settlement, along the coast of Northern Israel. The searing summer heat, the swirling golden dust from the lime sand and stones, and the deeply shadowed arches all combined to create an intensely vivid experience, which I sought to recreate in my studio.

Old Acre | Oil

$8,500

66 X 48

"Something stirred in me, and I realized that this was what I was meant to be doing all along."

Encounter | Oil

$4,000

24 X 36

Talent Prize Award, 4th "Animals" Competition, TERAVARNA.

Art should seek, not merely to reflect reality, but to create it—to draw the viewer through the picture frame into an alternate reality, exotic and mysterious yet somehow familiar, where a new encounter with oneself awaits.

Due to the demands of her busy practice, she could only paint sporadically, stealing time in the mornings and on weekends, until the advent of the coronavirus pandemic. During the long months of enforced confinement at home, she painted feverishly, recreating on canvas the faraway places she remembered.

The road from Petra to Amman was interminable. We were foolhardy enough to plan a summer trip to the Holy Land, and it now seemed that we were having a taste of Christ's forty days in the desert. The uneasy thought crossed my mind that, in case of engine failure, help would be many hours away. Back in the comfort of my studio, however, it was not the heat and discomfort but the majesty of those endless waves of sand that left a lasting imprint in my mind.

The Sands of Jordan | Oil

$4,600

20 X 16

Since then, she has continued to receive awards and recognition, despite her limited output now that normal city life has resumed. In this world, beauty and splendor are revealed in everyday scenes, and quiet moments are dignified and laden with significance.

A Field in Tiberias | Oil

$1,600

20 X 16

Somewhere on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee lies this hillside field, a glorious riot of green and gold.

“Light illuminates, but can also blind; darkness mystifies, but brings gloom if unrelieved.”
