Shushanik Chalyan

ARMENIA

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“My eagerness to express through painting was generated mostly from my personality.”

Creating works mostly through automatic painting technique has a point of getting emotions in a natural flow, uncut, raw if you will. There is no particular thoughts or vision on what final work will look like. It's just energy flowing through you which ends up being marked on a canvas. This is a way of representing oneself, one's thoughts, feelings, story in one's perspective, through oneself.

Created shortly after Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) conflict escalation in autumn of 2020, this represents emotional state at the time.
Karabakh literally means "black garden" and is where I'm from and my family lives there.

Art is a kind of therapy which helps creator to express themself, tell their story and has a target to help viewer not only know about creator but also heal through works. As well this kind of representation gives viewer role of a co-creator which means one work can have uncountable lives which is incredible and fascinating.

This work represents the next stage of emotional state after 44 days long war in Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh). There is hope and belife in better tomorow and peace.

Shushanik Chalyan, born on 26 October 1991, is a self-taught artist from a small town Martaker in Nagorno Karabakh. After local school she entered the state university in Economics. In the early 90s the situation in the country wasn’t stable so the family decided to move to Russia at first and then to Ukraine. After the ceasefire was signed, the family moved back to Nagorno-Karabakh.

“I am a reserved and quiet person and I use painting instead of word and letters.”

Impression of homeland after coming back was huge and challenging for 6 years-old Shushanik. Everything seemed unreal. Rich and beautiful nature scenes full of colors coexisted with abrupt graphics of building ruins. All these images and energies impacted Shushanik. Now those images are sometimes shown in Shushanik’s artworks. Sometimes it’s just a small touch and sometimes it is the main theme.

Since early years it was clear that Shushanik is an individual with a large range of interests. She had success in school and studied music, needlework and languages as a hobby. While choosing profession she took her mother’s, who is a math teacher, advice and entered Economy faculty in State University. For family and society this was one of actual or real professions one should have. For 8 years Shushanik worked as an accountant and accounting auditor.

“Growing in a society with strict rules and etiquette, especially for female individuals, painting seemed to be my only way to experience freedom and joy.”

“My real passion was art and painting and I spent my free time on painting or handcrafting.”

For an inspiring creator and free spirit inside it was hard to fit in. This felt like a trap but seemed to be the only way. All her emotions, worries, adversities, victories, pain and joy Shushanik expresses through color.

The art is multifaceted. It’s human’s soul, this is a rich world of wonderful images, this is a flight of imagination, it’s eager to understand the meaning of life and humanity. In her works Shushanik expressed “image” of a human and world, processed in her mind and shown in canvas with paints.
