"I paint imaginary faces to bridge the gap between souls."
Sarah Kofman traverses a creative landscape where the quiet whispers of suffering and optimism converge into a distinct visual language. This specific territory remains delicate yet carries an inherent strength that serves as the primary catalyst for her aesthetic explorations. The artist rejects the notion of safety in creativity, choosing instead to occupy necessary spaces where human connections materialize even when verbal communication reaches its limits.

“The Judgment” depicts a dark-skinned woman in a red dress, illuminated and exposed at the same time. Many eyes gaze out from the darkness—admiring, scrutinizing, averting their gaze. The work combines strength with vulnerability and asks why outward appearance counts for more than what a woman achieves. Visibility becomes a stage on which every gaze passes judgment.
The foundation of this journey lies in portraits characterized by unrestrained linework and figures born entirely from the imagination rather than physical models. These subjects possess independent narratives that emerge from a deep intuitive well, functioning as a bridge between raw sensation and distant memory. Spontaneity guides the hand as every mark prioritizes emotional resonance over a predetermined structural plan or technical blueprint to open up spaces for revelation.

Phoenix rising from the ashes | Oil

It is the strength that arises from deep despair. The feeling of letting go of everything that weighs you down and holds you back. Breaking through your own limits with powerful wing beats, rising into the air. Feeling your own worth, embracing life anew,.
The phoenix symbolizes rebirth, transformation, and the ability to start anew after every crisis. This is a sign of hope and encouragement, reminding us that every ending also holds a nex beginnig. Collaboration with Ingrid Guenther.
The resulting visages inhabit a dual state of familiarity and strangeness that invites the viewer to investigate the depths of the human condition. Contradictions of desire and vulnerability are etched into these surfaces, offering a reflection of dignity amidst the visible traces of life’s varied struggles. Personal history intertwines with collective experiences within these figures, presenting fragments of destiny and social tension that resonate beyond the individual.
"Every charcoal line follows an emotional pulse rather than models."
A diverse selection of materials including charcoal, pigments, and found objects creates a textural polyphony that speaks with its own distinct vocabulary. Resistance finds its form in the abrasive application of graphite, while fleeting thoughts are captured through the subtle and transparent traces of ink. Layers overlap to mimic the persistence of memory, ensuring that no past mark is truly erased but rather carried forward into the current composition.

Inner Peace | Mixed Media
$3,800
Peace within us arises where worries find rest. Inner peace is the space where we encounter ourselves —
connected to our body, to our breath. A place where a gentle smile touches our features
and we draw confidence—in our own strength and in the world that sustains us.

I am still here. I have experienced injustice and violence, I have endured and suffered. But I am not broken. I let it all pass me by and found peace and happiness in many moments. I have loved and given. When I look back today, I am filled with pride in what I have achieved.

Unshaken | Charcoal

Kofman produces art that intentionally provokes irritation and awareness rather than seeking to provide mere aesthetic comfort or simple decoration. The work serves as a site of confrontation, demanding that the viewer pauses to engage in a meaningful dialogue that might unsettle their established perspectives. Artistry exists within this shared experience, flourishing in the exact moment of felt tension between the physical canvas and the observing individual.
"My creative process utilizes overlapping layers of ink and pigments to represent the complex persistence of human memory within our collective struggle for environmental justice."
"The search for truthfulness requires me to investigate the delicate balance between external social tensions and internal dialogues. My practice rejects the concept of art as decoration, focusing instead on the duty to break through the invisibility of discrimination with empathy and determination. I actively choose to nurture hope through a rhythmic struggle with materials, transforming found objects and raw pigments into a testimony of resilience that invites every viewer to pause and breathe together in a shared moment of profound connection."
A powerful internal drive compels the artist to illuminate the aspects of existence that society frequently pushes into the shadows of invisibility. Her practice confronts difficult realities such as exclusion, discrimination, and environmental decay, addressing how these crises are often masked through political or emotional neglect. She operates under the conviction that creative expression holds a fundamental duty to dismantle these barriers through empathy and a determined sense of vulnerability.

Transcience | Mixed Media
$3,900
I have accompanied children into life. Through my work, I have contributed to the well-being of all. But now all that is behind me. Loneliness has become a familiar companion. I have little contact with those around me. Other people’s lives pass me by, and I am no longer part of them. I walk through the streets and feel transparent and pale — like a quiet observer of a world that moves on without me.
This approach transforms the act of painting into a living dialogue that functions simultaneously as a protest and a beacon of resilience. Silence is replaced by a visual voice that suggests hope remains a viable active decision rather than a passive or naive sentiment. Healing occurs when the work courageously names the wounds of the world while simultaneously constructing a sanctuary where comfort and growth are possible.
Delicate, flowing watercolor tones depict a startled hare, hidden in the bushes. The sweeping lines lend the moment a sense of movement and uncertainty, as if the animal were about to flee at any moment. The work reveals the tension between nature and human influence—a fleeting moment of disturbance that simultaneously reveals vulnerability and vitality.

Continuous search defines the evolution of her practice as she seeks truthfulness and a profound sense of connection through every new series. The creative act functions as a rigorous examination of what the contemporary world requires from the artist in times of global uncertainty. Self realization remains secondary to the pursuit of fostering relationships with nature and the fundamental threads that bind the human family together.
I keep my head bowed, a small smile playing on my lips. Inside me are years of struggle, unseen by anyone. I have raised my voice when injustice affected me and my community. I have learned to be quietly strong, even when the world often only sees my vulnerability. My story is marked by courage—the courage to keep going, even when the burden is heavy. This smile is my silent rebellion, my promise to myself never to give up and to walk my path with dignity.

Rough waves carry a sailing ship far away. On the shore, people say: It's leaving. But where the light breaks through the clouds and is reflected in the water, someone is already waiting and says: It's coming.
The painting captures this in-between space—the moment between departure and arrival, between transience and hope.
The inception of a piece often starts with a fleeting memory that triggers a dynamic process characterized by both fluid grace and arduous struggle. Testimony of change is embedded in the surface of every painting, recording the temporal shifts that occur during the lengthy gestation of an idea. The artist embraces the friction of the process, viewing the final result as a permanent witness to the internal evolution required to finish.
What is nature in a world where almost every environment has been influenced by humans?
I searched for the original, the unchanging. And what could be more natural than caring for the well-being of our descendants? Love for the life we create drives evolution forward. A mother's love is unconditional and boundless. This feeling connects many species on this earth.
My wish is that we focus our attention on what we have in common. That we treat the nature around us with respect and as equal.

Motherly love | Oil
$3,900
The audience is approached as a respected counterpart rather than a passive target, invited to encounter the images with the curiosity one affords a stranger. There is an intentional absence of a correct interpretation, as the beauty of communication relies on the unique perspective each person brings to the gaze. Ultimately, these works strive to make humanity visible in all its struggling complexity while questioning the possibilities for change within each individual.

Girl with a hood | Oil
$4,500
It's getting darker around me. On my way home someone pointed his finger at me.
Was it because of my skin colour? How much silly talk have I heard on schoolyard this week!
It's getting colder. I'm pulling my hood further over my face. I'm feeling a bit safer this way.
But there is hope, too. A voice reaching out to me, when I am feeling lost and helpless.
I turn my face towards the light.
"Healing begins when we courageously confront our most painful shadows."
