This painting was based on my memories of my father who worked for the L&N Railroad during the fifties and sixties in Corbin, Kentucky. He worked the third shift, so it seemed to me that he was always bone-weary. Yet, he always had time for family.
Raised in the rugged landscapes of southeastern Kentucky, Sandra Rhodes was surrounded by a community that understood hardship and perseverance. Art became her refuge, helping her navigate the difficulties of childhood. Losing both parents to cancer by the age of nine, she developed a profound appreciation for the human experience, a perspective she now channels into her portraiture.

This is painting of an old man, inspired by my husband, captures the essence of a life well-lived. His eyes, wise and kind, are framed by deep, thoughtful lines that speak of years of laughter and experience. His silver hair, though sparse, adds a dignified touch.
The influence of these experiences is evident in her work, which reflects a deep understanding of life’s fragility and tenacity. Each painting and drawing she creates is more than a simple portrait; it is a narrative of survival and renewal. Her art captures the essence of individuals who, like herself, have faced adversity and emerged transformed.

The human face, with its vast expressive potential, serves as her primary medium for storytelling.

In this drawing, the leopard is depicted with its body low to the ground, muscles taut and ready to spring into action. Its eyes are fixed with an intense focus on its prey. The leopard's spotted coat blends seamlessly with the dappled shadows of its surroundings, a testament to its evolutionary prowess as a stealthy predator. This artwork attempts to capture not just a moment in the wild, but the relentless spirit of nature, where every failure only fuels the fire of survival.
This drawing, inspired by my granddaughter and Degas's iconic ballerinas, tries to capture the grace and fluidity that define his work. I used soft, muted colors that attempt to evoke the delicate pastels Degas favored, contributing to a dreamlike atmosphere. The texture of the tutus, the subtle shadows on her and the play of light across the scene highlight my appreciation for Degas's style.
