Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“The Japanese art of Kintsugi inspires the translation of my artwork.”

Rajul is an international artist whose work is inspired by the desire to communicate calm and spiritual peace. Having lived in Asia for several years, she is influenced by Asian styles and philosophies, while the intent of her work draws from a previous career in healthcare.

The Ajna Chakra is located in the center of the forehead between the eyebrows. It is associated with light and illumination. The affirmation is "I see". The aura is Indigo. When we focus only on our intellect and reject our spirituality, this chakra goes out of balance, and that can lead to stroke, neurological disturbances, headaches, blurred vision, among others. The life lesson is to use our insight and intuition to see past our physical environment.

Rajul has witnessed strong connections between emotional and physical well-being and believes in the importance of sharing positive energy. Her artwork helps to address aspects of the human condition and its ability to recover from illness, injury, and/or trauma, including the impact of humans on the environment.

The Sahasrara energy center is located in our crown. It is the last of our spiritual chakras and is the source of our connection to the divine and our higher selves. When we lose faith, inspiration, and spirituality; we experience exhaustion that is not linked to physical disorder, and also extreme sensitivity to light and sound. The element is "thought." The affirmation is "I see." The aura is purple, gold, and white. The life lesson is to experience the divine meaning of life.

Kintsugi is a physical manifestation of resilience. Its purpose is to “repair." The practice emphasizes the beauty and utility of breaks and imperfections. A vessel is repaired using tree sap and gold splicing. Traditionally applied to pottery in Japan, her artworks are 2D representations of this concept.

“What needs repair does not need to define us. We can heal, regenerate and evolve into improved versions of ourselves, with renewed strength and purpose.”

An illness or injury does not make a person “ugly” or “weak”. The result of regeneration lends greater beauty to that which is healed. Rajul presents three collections in her portfolio: The Kintsugi Body, Kintsugi Planet, and Kintsugi Chakras. The Kintsugi Body is a collection that focuses on the female human body and combines the philosophy of the human chakra centers. Various injuries are depicted as healed with the body becoming more beautiful due to the acceptance of imperfections and the determination to evolve into a stronger version. The person is inspired to maintain hope while re-inventing oneself.

“I moved to Japan in 2012 after retiring from my first career in healthcare. I trained extensively across Oil, Sumi-E/Nihonga, and Acrylic for 7 years between the Tokyo Campus of Temple’s Tyler School of Art and Professional/Studio workshops. Living between the US and Singapore since 2019, I continue my professional development whenever possible.”

Given the impact of global warming and climate change, Kintsugi Planet is a collection that offers hope and inspiration for various parts of the planet being repaired with care and attention. Kintsugi Chakras: Human beings have 7 energy centers in their bodies that help them to process their emotional well-being. Based on the Book, “The Anatomy of the Spirit”, Rajul delves into the abstract to focus on the aura of each chakra and its connection to the human spirit. When a particular chakra is not in balance, it can lead to physical illness. The philosophy of Kintsugi is applied to recover “balance” in the energy center and restore wellness to the spirit.

Vishuddha's energy resides in our throat and involves our authentic voice. It is where faith and understanding combine. When out of balance, we have difficulty speaking our truth and expressing ourselves. We are out of alignment with who we are and we can experience sore throat, stiff neck, swollen glands and thyroid problems. The affirmation is "I speak", the element is "sound" and aura is a light blue. The life lesson is to speak and receive the truth.

“I use a variety of media and materials, such as oil, nihonga, acrylic, gold/silver leaf, paper, and other textural compounds.”

Anahata is our fourth chakra; energy center resides in our heart. It is the bridge from our physical to the spiritual aspects of ourselves. When in harmony, we accept ourselves, cultivate joy, compassion and love as an extension of ourselves. Out of balance, physical ailments can include heart disease, respiratory ailments and breast cancer. Experiencing compassion & connection with oneself & others is the teaching. The aura is green, the element is "air" and the affirmation is "I love".

Her works have been shown in national and international juried shows, including XIII Florence Biennale, the ION Orchard Gallery in Singapore, the Ueno No Mori Art Museum (Royal Art Museum) in Japan, the National Art Gallery in Tokyo, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno, the Intercontinental Hotel In Osaka and the ANA Crowne Plaza hotel in Kobe.

Our 3rd chakra, Manupura is located 2 inches above the navel and is also known as the "Power Chakra". In balance, we feel centered in who we are and cultivate our personal power in healthy ways. We feel inner peace and calm via acceptance of what's around us and our position and purpose. Without this balance, we can experience arthritis, gastric ulcers, eating disorders and liver/adrenal dysfunction. The aura is yellow, the element is "fire" and the affirmation is "I can".

Rajul's “Muladhara I Roots” and “Anahata I Healing the Heart” were each given an artistic excellence award by the Circle Foundation of the Arts in 2020 and 2021, respectively. “Kintsugi Earth II” was selected as part of the 29th Annual International Society of Experimental Artists (ISEA) Exhibition and won 5th place in Abstract Expressionism with the American Art Awards in Fall 2020.”

Svadisthana is our 2nd chakra located 2 inches below the navel. The color is "orange", the element is "water" & the affirmation is "I feel". When in harmony, we create and maintain healthy relationships where we are able to use emotions to connect with others without losing our identity and to freely express creativity. When out of harmony, we feel unstable/unhealthy in aspects of our sexuality and issues around money/abundance. We can experience reproductive issues and feelings of shame.

“Water Lillies” was selected as part of the 32nd Annual Japanese Exhibition of Nature taking place at the Ueno No Mori Museum in August 2019. “Earth & Sky” was chosen as part of the 82nd Annual Shinseisaku Exhibition at the National Art Gallery in Tokyo. “Earth & Sky II” and “Grotto of Water Lillies” were juried into the 49th Annual Genyouten Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art in Ueno; where “Earth and Sky II” also received an honorary award from KusaKabe Paints.

Muladhara is our first chakra. It is our foundational energy that establishes our identity from our physical family & sense of group safety and security. The Aura is "red," the element is "earth" and the affirmation is "I am." It is located in our legs, bones, feet, the base of our spine and in our immune system. When out of balance, we can experience mental health disorders, chronic low back pain, knee and/or weight problems. The lesson is about feeling safe & secure in our physical world.

“I have written articles about the art of Kintsugi in the Summer 2021 issue of White Enso and in the July/August 2020 edition of Passage.”
