Payal Hattar

INDIA

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“Art has the potential to elevate our human experience as we take inspiration from God’s greatest creation.”

Payal Hattar is an artist based in India whose creative expression is deeply rooted in her upbringing. She was brought up by loving and supportive parents who were also ‘artists.’ She spent countless hours admiring her mom’s paintings that adorned their home. These gems captivated Payal’s tender spirit at a very young age.

Playing by the Kerb | Oil

$3,700

32 X 24

I was returning from my morning run, when I saw some young kids playing by the kerb. They had filled a piece of garden hose with some dirt and were slinging it around. What ensued was unrestrained mirth and a whole lot of fun. I was struck by the innocence and simplicity of these kids. The scene kindled many childhood memories and thus I decided to create this painting in oils. The work can be described as detailed with a focus on composition, feel, and color harmony. Her father, a skilled architect, had a talent for sketching and a deep love for nature. He spent his mornings in their garden, nurturing plants, pruning trees, and creating serene green spaces.

The Revealing | Oil

$1,800

21 X 14

The painting captures a scene from the post-Covid days. A renewed sense of liberation intermixed with hesitation. A young girl takes tentative steps to explore an old fort. Her face mask is pulled down slightly, depicting guarded optimism. The interplay of light and shadows evokes both mystery and fresh revelations.

In school, Payal found joy in drawing and later experimented with oil portraiture. Although she pursued a career in teaching for seven years after majoring in economics, her passion for creating never waned. She wrote poetry and learned to play the guitar, but painting ultimately brought her the most joy.

“I believe that understanding the wonder and subtlety of the natural world enables and enriches the creative process.”

The garden was Payal’s favorite childhood ‘playground’. She and her brother spent endless hours outdoors playing cricket, flying kites, and chasing after butterflies. It was also their starship, offering breathtaking views of the night sky, stormy clouds, and foggy winter mornings. These experiences played a pivotal role in shaping the painter within her.

Resplendence | Oil

$2,500

18 X 24

‘Light’ is the essence of this painting. The ephemeral sunrays sneak through a sea of clouds and cast a speckled glaze on the entire landscape: the trees, the meadows, and even the meandering path. Tiny gestural brush marks are used to highlight the effect of light.

Buck Deer is a precious creature. It’s poised yet alert, graceful yet wild. The painting also embraces the contradictory hues and values. Through the ultramarine snow, emerges this ochre toned majestic Deer. Layers of paint with the spotter brush enabled me to paint the fur.

Bystander in the Snow | Oil

$2,700

24 X 24

In Payal's landscape paintings, you’ll find elements like distant roads, open fields, expansive mountains, and meandering rivers. These scenes are inspired by her love for the great outdoors and cherished memories of four-wheeling on mountain roads.

“A tiny flower resting on the bough, an elusive smile, the rising wave, or a cloudburst can fill one’s heart with wonder and reverence.”

“The freedom and joy of standing amidst the blustery winds and witnessing the changing skyline cannot be described.”

During the pandemic in 2020, Payal devoted more time to painting and learning from the timeless techniques of masters like John Singer Sargent, John Constable, Monet, Frans Hals, and Richard Schmid. Contemporary artists such as Andrew Tischler, Kenneth Yarus, Ian Roberts, and Michelle Dunaway have also inspired her.

Standing Tall | Oil

$1,800

18 X 24

There is something magical and comforting about lighthouses. This one proudly stands amid the august mountains and the approaching storm. In this composition, the road, the fence, and the distant hills lead the viewer to this bright blue beacon of hope. The sky, although replete with clouds acts as a resting space, contrasting the dynamism in the foreground. I enjoyed painting all the elements in this piece including the little pine trees, distant hills, and quaint cottages.

Painting allows her to relive precious moments and curate experiences that hopefully take viewers’ breaths away. For her, art is more than a hobby or profession; it’s a beautiful opportunity to pause, reflect, and wander in non-material things. It is also a way to honor her heavenly father.

Placid | Acrylic

$1,500

16 X 12

Time stands still in this painting. All the alluring colors of the sky and flora are reflected in the placid river. The boat rests at the bank adding to the story of stillness. This artwork is done in acrylics with crisp bold colors, and precise brushwork.

Payal's recent exhibitions showcase her artistic growth and global reach. Notably, her work has been featured in The Holy Art Gallery's digital exhibition "Art on Loop" in Barcelona (July 2024), London-Athens (August 2024), and Paris (September 2024). Additionally, she participated in the NEVER virtual show (July-August 2024) at The Holy Art Gallery. These international platforms have enabled her to share her vision with diverse audiences.

She has been recognized in prestigious art competitions, highlighting her artistic efforts. In 2024, she received prestigious awards, including Exhibition Finalist at Fusion Art's 7th Women Artists Art Exhibition, Honorable Mention at TERAVARNA's 8th Figurative International Juried Art Competition, Special Mention Award—Artist Grant from TERAVARNA, and Special Merit Award at Light, Space & Time Online Art Gallery's 14th Landscapes Art Exhibition. These honors reflect her commitment to artistic excellence and her dedication to pushing creative boundaries.

Sitting in front of a sprightly fountain, my little one is thrilled as a myriad of tiny drops fall on her neck and brow. This is a special memory of our first international trip with our daughter. It was also her favorite character, Mickey’s birthday. Truly, there was ‘Joy’ in the air. While doing this painting, I took inspiration from the works of Frans Hals. I am a huge fan of warm and cheerful quality evident in his portraits.

Each day brings forth insights and discoveries. Most of Payal’s work is representational, focusing on narrative, composition, color harmony, and detail. One of her favorite subjects is ‘children.’ She delights in observing kids play with abandon and laughs for no reason, attempting to recapture those sublime moments on canvas.

Endless Serenades |Oil

$2,800

For me this scene was like a musical composition as the undulating waves filled the air with a perennial song. The ‘Sun’ was also the star of the show as it brought out sprightly colors in the sky and the sand.

“Through portrait paintings, I aim to tell honest stories that resonate with the viewer at a personal level.”
