“What better statement about Art, and Universal relatability, than with the use of crayons.”
Known for her successful equine painting series of eleven years, Nancy B. Frank
is now beginning to explore her continued evolution as a visual artist. She has worked successfully in varied mediums, from painted wooden jewelry and furniture to sculptured cakes, but consistently as a painter and photographer.

While living in NYC for thirteen years, Frank often referred to herself as “Free Lance Nance,” doing various art related jobs; teaching Serigraphy as an adjunct instructor at New York University, as a paint assistant to the artist Joe Zucker, or creating large collage pieces for an Audio/Visual company.

Frank earned her M.F.A. in photo printmaking from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, after a B.F.A in painting at Ohio Wesleyan University. While at the University of Wisconsin she was a Teaching Assistant, in Design.
“I was lucky to be able to return to the community I love.”
Frank studied in Rome, Italy, on a Junior Year Abroad program, and later received scholarships to attend the MacDowell Art Colony, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Ossabaw Island Project and the Oxbow Summer School of the Arts.

Feather Series #4 | Mixed Media
$3,900

When Frank eventually left NYC to move to the mountains of Colorado, she became a “faux” decorative artist, working in the mountain mansions with a team of painters, while always continuing her main interest in painting.
“The equine painting series was conceived while taking photos of horses in Uruguay with her new camera equipment. Once established, equestrian travel became business trips.”
“Crayons eventually turned to feathers, rich in symbolism. In Shamanism if one finds a feather, it is a sign you are the right path.”
Eventually, Frank dismantled her B&W photo darkroom and made the transition to the new digital color format, where she could finally marry her painting with her photography.

Feather Piece #5 | Mixed Media
$3,900
20 X 44
This is the fifth piece in my series entitled OUT OF PLACE Each piece is a "paragraph" in my recent journey, expressing a very difficult year, during Covid.
These works are on Rives BFK paper
Recently Frank attempted to move from the San Juan mountains only to realize it was to the wrong place for the wrong reasons. Because of this unhappy experience, compounded by the isolation of COVID, Frank began expressing herself in a completely new and abstracted format.

Feather Piece #6 | Mixed Media
$3,900
20 X 44
This is the sixth piece in my series entitled OUT OF PLACE Each piece is a "paragraph" in my recent journey, expressing a very difficult year, during Covid.
These works are on Rives BFK paper
Working in mixed media; acrylic paint and textural mediums, oil pastel, cold wax oil and even black shoe polish, she is presently working in a series on 30 x 44 inch Rives BFK paper, telling her “story.”

Feather Series #7 | Mixed Media
$1,950
16 X 40
“My new series, entitled OUT OF PLACE is the representation of my story.”

Feather Series #8 | Mixed Media
$1,950
16 X 40
Diptych on canvas, #2 in a series of 3
Each piece is a paragraph, beginning with monochromatic colors which are now beginning to explode into color as her journey progresses. Although graphics and abstraction have always intrigued, Frank seems to need to contrast the abstracted grounds with the tension created by a realistic object. Initially she used Crayolas.

Feather Series #9 | Mixed Media
$1,950
30 X 22
Different colors and combinations and certain birds represent unique traits. For example, “white feathers often appear in our life when your spiritual desires and requests are being answered. White feathers often show up in your life after a period of disappointment or grief, as a way to provide encouragement and let you know that the universal flow of energy is working in your favor.”

Crayola Series #3 | Mixed Media
$2,900
30 X 22
This is an example of the Crayola Series, preceding the Feather Series as mentioned in the Artist Statement. It is mixed media on Arch paper.
“What is unique about this series is that it is not photographically referenced.”
