Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“I concentrate on portraits that represent different human experiences, sensations, and reactions.”

Morgan Rogers began exploring art at thirteen years old, initially taking interest in hyper realistic artworks that she had discovered both online and within art shows. As a teenager, her budding interest for creating expanded into a constant desire to explore and experiment with a range of mediums.

Far Outside and Deep Within | Oil

$900

My oil painting represents the negative ways we react to things, what we choose to focus on, and how doing so determines the way our lives appear. The way we view things, what we think and care about—they are all affected, warped, or lost. Whether we focus too much on what people say and think, or decide something is bad or good, it is unintentionally because of our own thoughts. In the same way that we have power to be negative, we have the same power to be positive, content, and hopeful.

Running home from school and going straight to her desk to grab her colored pencils, it was no surprise to see how quickly her skills developed into those of a mature artist. She taught herself by simply practicing for hours at a time, working from pictures and other artworks and attempting to copy their details.

Hopeless | Oil

$600

Struggling with depression since I was a child, this painting shows my lowest points—when I believed things couldn't get better.

She especially took an interest in nature, eyes, lips, and animals; many of her drawings included these subjects. Around this time, she created an Instagram to display her growing skills, which shortly amassed over fifty thousand followers.

“I began to spend up to sixty hours a week drawing, eager to teach myself as many techniques as possible.”

Morgan eventually decided to step away from drawing and teach herself a new medium, which led to a sudden transition into a world of oil painting. Now specializing in oil paintings, Morgan made a slow progression from simple portraits to ones that conveyed more emotion.

Identity | Oil

$300

Identity can be a troubling topic; I struggle with determining who I am as a person while also taking in the opinions and words of others. Sometimes, I feel like I am just fragments of an idea of who I once was.

Spending time in an emotionally abusive relationship left me feeling terrified, broken, and anxious—all the time.

Please | Oil

$450

She slowly taught herself how to be less careful with her tools, and to incorporate expressive mark making. Developing as a self-taught artist over the years, she now strives to mix hyper-realistic details, expressive paint strokes, and strategic spacing to create a dynamic work that carries a deep sense of emotion.

“The moment I first touched the bristles of a small round brush to the textured surface of a large canvas, I felt I had found my calling within art.”

“Morgan primarily uses her artwork as a way to articulate her personal struggles.”

She grappled with deeply rooted anxiety for many years, and found it incredibly difficult to communicate with others. When her oil painting, Far Outside and Deep Within, was displayed in a gallery for the first time, she suddenly found herself engaging with dozens of people and answering dozens of questions.

All at Once | Oil

$500

A subtle capture of the beautiful moments that can happen in a bed. Entering new worlds, dreaming of different possibilities, new life, and last days.

Morgan utilized her artwork as a tool to not only express herself but as a means to connect with those around her—for their own unique experiences to be reflected in the sad eyes of an unknown woman frozen under the constraints of brush strokes and paint.

Crumble | Oil

Falling apart in chaotic or stressful times, and losing yourself in transitionary periods.

Since the basis of her style stems from hyperrealism, she likes to get inspiration from her own photography. Morgan’s creative process begins with a series of sketches on paper that help to visualize and develop an idea. From there, she uses her camera to capture images that will be used as references for her artwork.

A portrait of an old friend.

Htoon | Graphite

$200

“Some of my paintings revolve around topics including depression, anxiety, insecurity, and emotional abuse.”

Twisted | Oil

This was the first ever self portrait that I painted, and the first time that I experimented with more expressive brush strokes. I used different streaks of paint in an attempt to create a feeling of chaos and stress.

Sometimes, she will mesh various photos together to achieve a specific vision, and may even digitally draw on top of the image to create a clear reference for her painting. Through this process, she hopes to mix the realistic details of a photo with expressive paint strokes to create a surrealistic image.

An expression of my femininity and a capture of serenity and self-acceptance.

Angelina | Colorpencil

$350

Currently, Morgan is a student studying art and design, and is eager to continue her artistic career. In the past few years, she has had her artwork displayed in a variety of national and international juried exhibitions as well as published in magazines.

Without Her | Graphite

My grandmother grew up without knowing her mother, and instead in its place felt the lingering shadow of loss. I created this portrait as a way to embody the woman she never knew.

“I realized that my art was a way to speak for myself, for others, and with others.”
