Architecture Sketching

Mo Chuan (Yi Tsung Weng)

TAIWAN

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“Through my pen, I speak to the world—each line carries a breath of the soul.”

Mo Chuan (real name: Yi Tsung Weng) is a Taiwanese artist whose work explores the quiet interplay between time, silence, and observation. Raised in the mountain town of Puli, in central Taiwan, he was deeply influenced by the calm rhythms of nature and the gentle presence of his grandmother, whose ink-stained hands left an early imprint on his creative path. His first connection with the world came through sketching, first in colored pencil, then pen sketches, where each line became a bridge between inner reflection and external reality.

Chapel in the Afternoon Light | Ink

480$

14 X 8

A historic chapel rises quietly under the soft afternoon light in Melbourne. With meticulous strokes and tonal nuance, this drawing captures both the stillness of architecture and the transient life around it — a lone cyclist passing by, the shadow of time gently cast across stone.

With a background in architectural drafting and construction detailing, Yi Tsung’s training instilled technical precision in his work. Yet his architecture sketching transcends structure, blending control with emotional sensitivity. Over time, he shifted away from technical renderings to expressive pen sketches and paintings, treating drawing not just as a visual practice but as a form of listening, an act of slowing down and creating space for the unspoken to emerge.

Silent Bloom | Oil

A quiet presence of purple blooms rests in a simple glass jar, their soft hues gently rising against a deep background. This still life evokes the fleeting beauty of everyday objects, inviting the viewer to pause, breathe, and observe the poetry in silence.

Yi Tsung’s fine line art captures intimate, solitary moments: a sunlit street corner in Melbourne, a jar of wildflowers echoing an internal season, or a weathered wall softened by memory. Working primarily with technical pen, acrylic, and colored pencil, he infuses his compositions with a contemplative stillness. Though minimal in form, his works evoke expansive emotional landscapes where quiet feelings are allowed to surface.

“My pen is a vessel holding breath, silence, and stillness.”

Inspired by Zhuangzi’s philosophy and Impressionist atmospheres, Yi Tsung’s sketch pen art and acrylic art paint avoid grand declarations. Instead, he offers meditative reflections on themes like decay, beauty, distance, intimacy, and impermanence. His process is both intuitive and attentive, guided by what he calls “the rhythm of breath inside the line”—a philosophy that anchors his approach to mark-making.

Yi Tsung’s formal education includes mentorship under painter Sun Shao-Ying and art teacher Liang Kun-Ming. He later attended Fu-Hsin Trade and Arts School in Taiwan and graduated from Nagoya University of Arts in Japan. These institutions laid the technical foundation for his visual practice, but it was his personal discipline and curiosity that ultimately shaped his distinctive artistic voice.

“For me, every line carries breath, time, and awareness. Drawing is an inward journey—each stroke a quiet trace connecting my inner world to the outer one.”

“Drawing, for me, is not just a visual practice—it’s a form of listening. It’s how I slow down and create space for silent things to speak. I’m drawn to quiet moments: a sunlit street corner in Melbourne, a jar of wildflowers echoing an inner season, or a wall faded by time. My work is minimal but holds vast emotional landscapes where stillness breathes. Inspired by Zhuangzi’s philosophy and Impressionist atmospheres, I avoid loud declarations. Instead, I explore beauty, decay, distance, and the eternal through quiet observation. Though I studied architectural engineering, my passion has always been drawing. I taught myself fine art by sketching streets and riversides across Taiwan and Japan. Over time, I developed a style that blends precision with poetic abstraction—monochrome lines and subtle strokes that evoke nostalgia and reflection. Light, shadow, and memory are the materials I return to, again and again, with reverence and care.”

Though trained as an architectural engineer, Yi Tsung’s true passion has always been drawing and technical pen art. He is entirely self-taught in fine art, having spent years sketching Taiwan and Japan’s streets, riversides, and historic architecture. Over time, he developed a unique style that fuses architectural clarity with poetic abstraction. Through monochrome lines and subtle gestures in his architecture sketching, he invites viewers into spaces of nostalgia, stillness, and contemplation.

Yi Tsung signs his work as “Mo Chuan © 2025 / YT Weng / Silent Hatch,” combining identity and philosophy. “Silent Hatch” symbolizes the quiet incubation of creative thought and the birth of each piece. In 2025, he began transitioning with his family to Melbourne, a move that sparked new awareness of light, space, and cultural resonance. His recent series, Traces Between Lines, explores how physical and internal worlds mirror one another. As his work reaches global audiences, Yi Tsung remains rooted in stillness, attentive to shadows, and, above all, resistant to haste.
