Michelle Wilkinson

UNITED KINGDOM

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

"The easel is a magical portal where physical exhaustion fades into the background, letting my imagination run entirely free through moonlit forests and starry night skies."

Michelle Wilkinson paints under the name The Sleepy Easel, and the ten acrylic works in this exhibition open onto a single quiet world. Enchanting Moonlit Deer, Moonlit Forest, Watcher of the Violet Night, and Foxes at Mossbridge Falls belong to its woodlands. Celestial Echo, Whale Moon Voyager, Tidal Drift, and Manta Ballet belong to its seas. Hummingbird and Blossoms and Blue Eggs bring its gardens into daylight. Each painting is small, 8.3 by 11.7 inches, and each is built to do the same thing: slow the viewer down. Glowing moons, rising bubbles, lantern light, and nests of blue eggs recur across the series like characters in a storybook, and the palette of indigo, teal, and forest green holds them together. This is art made to be lived with, and the exhibition is best approached the way its maker approaches her easel, without hurry.

Enchanting Moonlit Deer | Acrylic

Enchanting Moonlit Deer | Acrylic

$240

8.3" x 11.7"

Painted in deep indigoes and cool teals, this piece invites you into a world that has completely slowed down. A lone deer stands peacefully at the water's edge, drinking from a river that mirrors the glowing celestial sky. This original painting beautifully captures the essence of The Sleepy Easel, offering a gentle visual lullaby to soothe the nervous system and remind us of the magic found in quiet, restful moments.

Painting entered her life as a necessity rather than a career plan. When the pandemic was at its worst, Michelle was a community nurse making home visits through a period that frightened everyone, and her shifts left her drained in body and mind. To protect her own wellbeing she began each evening with acrylics and an empty canvas, and the studio became the one room where the pace of the world dropped away. What started as a private form of therapy grew into a serious, sustained practice, and its purpose has held steady since. Her paintings connect the fragile truths she witnessed in her nursing years with a gentle world of wonder, so that the relief she first made for herself after a hard day is now offered to anyone who stands in front of the work.

Celestial Echo | Acrylic

Celestial Echo | Acrylic

$240

8.3" x 11.7"

A dreamlike coastal escape wrapped in the glowing mystery of the midnight tide. Bathed in a mesmerizing wash of emerald greens and deep sea jade, this painting captures a moment of pure, silent solitude. A lone sailboat glides softly across the water, guided only by a brilliant full moon that paints a ribbon of light across the rippling waves. This original artwork carries the signature heartbeat of The Sleepy Easel, creating a safe, whimsical harbor where the busy mind can drop its anchor and rest.

"In a world full of noise, my studio became the only place where time slowed down."

Chronic fatigue shapes her daily life, and the name The Sleepy Easel acknowledges it openly. Rather than treating the condition as a limit on what she can do, Michelle has built her whole creative philosophy around it. In a culture that insists on constant busyness as the measure of worth, her work is a calm and deliberate rebellion. Fatigue requires her to paint at a gentler, slower pace, and the result is that every picture carries unusual intention and care. At the easel, tiredness recedes and her imagination is free to wander among night woods and constellations. The paintings in this exhibition are, among other things, evidence that a body in need of rest does not prevent a mind from finding magic, and that slowness can be a method rather than an obstacle.

Whale Moon Voyager | Acrylic

Whale Moon Voyager | Acrylic

$240

8.3" x 11.7"

An enchanting dive into a celestial ocean where the sky and sea seamlessly melt together. Set against a magical backdrop of starlit emerald water, a gentle blue whale glides gracefully beneath the surface. Above, a tiny fishing boat floats quietly before a massive, glowing crescent moon that rises from the horizon like a protective glass dome. This original artwork beautifully embraces the whimsical folklore style of The Sleepy Easel, crafting a safe, cozy visual sanctuary.

Storybook worlds are the heart of her output. Across her signature collections, Ocean Dreaming, Whispering Woodlands, and Lily of the Moon, she has assembled a gentle folklore of her own: swan couples, foxes on mossy bridges, whales beneath crescent moons, lone figures carrying lanterns into the trees. Her drawing is clean and simple, closer to illustration than to realism, and it is wrapped in a dreamy, nature-inspired atmosphere that gives even the smallest scene a sense of depth. Nothing in these pictures threatens. Animals watch calmly, water moves slowly, and the moon is always close enough to feel like a companion. The effect is that of a children's book written for adults who have forgotten how to rest, and the works here are drawn from each of the three collections.

A serene descent into a peaceful underwater paradise filled with quiet movement. Immersed in gentle washes of bright turquoise and deep sea greens, a majestic humpback whale glides gracefully through clear ocean waters. Pockets of bubbles rise softly toward the surface as small schools of fish dance in the distance. This original artwork captures the true restorative spirit of The Sleepy Easel, offering a soothing visual escape to the gentle weightlessness of the deep blue.

Tidal Drift | Acrylic

Tidal Drift | Acrylic

$240

8.3" x 11.7"

"Chronic fatigue forces me to work at a much gentler, slower pace, which means every piece is created with immense intention and care. It is proof that while the body might need deep rest, the mind can still find magic."

Solo Artist

"Painting began for me not out of a formal ambition, but out of a real need to survive. During the height of the pandemic I was working on the front lines as a community nurse, visiting people in their homes during one of the most frightening times in modern history. The days were heavy, fast paced, and emotionally draining. To protect my own mental health, I turned to acrylic paint and a blank canvas at the end of my shifts. What started as private therapy eventually grew into a deep, dedicated art practice, a way to bridge the vulnerable realities of human life with a soft, comforting world of wonder. Though I no longer provide clinical care, my background in nursing still guides everything I create. I use my art to soothe the nervous system, giving tired eyes a soft place to land without demanding anything in return."

Manta Ballet | Acrylic

Manta Ballet | Acrylic

$240

8.3" x 11.7"

A weightless journey into the sun-drenched depths of a calm, crystalline sea. Bathed in a soothing spectrum of ocean blues, two spotted eagle rays glide effortlessly through streaming shafts of underwater light. Soft bubbles float upward past gentle schools of fish and a quiet coral reef resting along the sandy seabed. This original painting beautifully embodies the restorative heart of The Sleepy Easel, capturing a tranquil rhythm of movement that calms the mind.

Home became a central idea for her during the years of visiting patients where they lived, and it guides how she composes a picture. Michelle designs her work so that the rooms it hangs in feel safe, calm, and protected. She keeps her compositions open and uncluttered, with generous areas of sky or water around the subject, so that the eye has somewhere to settle and the viewer's thoughts have space to expand. Each painting is offered as an invitation to step out of the daily rush and into a peaceful, whimsical place for a while. That is a modest ambition compared with much contemporary art, and it is also a demanding one, because a picture meant to calm a room has to be right in every proportion and every tone.

Moonlit Forest | Acrylic

Moonlit Forest | Acrylic

$240

8.3" x 11.7"

A mystical journey along a moonlit forest path wrapped in comforting silence. Bathed in deep night blues and radiant whites, a lone figure in a soft, textured gown stands at the edge of the woods. Holding a small lantern, she walks beneath a magnificent full moon that breaks through the dark canopy, bathing her path in a beam of protective, celestial light. This original artwork evokes the fairytale spirit of The Sleepy Easel, creating a safe, enchanting dreamscape.

Acrylic suits both her temperament and her energy. The medium allows her to work intuitively, following the natural rise and fall of what her body can give on a particular day, and to stop and return without loss. She builds each painting in soft, thin layers, blending gradients until they hold the exact feeling of a misty dawn or a settling twilight. Her colors are chosen for comfort: deep indigoes, sea jades, and earthy forest greens, balanced by sudden warm notes of amber from a lantern or a moon. The act of painting is a form of meditation for her, and the gentle rhythm of that process stays visible in the subtle textures of the surface, so that the restorative energy of real rest is woven into the fabric of the work itself.

A cozy nocturnal portrait celebrating the quiet wisdom of the woodland night. Perched thoughtfully upon a winding tree branch, a detailed barn owl gazes out under a glowing crescent moon. The scene is enveloped in a magical, starlit backdrop of textured violet and deep amethyst tones, with delicate leaves framing the bird's serene silhouette. This original painting beautifully captures the whimsical folklore essence of The Sleepy Easel, offering a gentle visual companion that brings calm.

Watcher of the Violet Night | Acrylic

Watcher of the Violet Night | Acrylic

$240

8.3" x 11.7"

Water runs through four of the exhibited paintings. Celestial Echo sets a single sailboat on a midnight tide of emerald and sea jade, guided by a full moon that lays a ribbon of light across the waves. Whale Moon Voyager places a blue whale beneath a starlit surface while a tiny fishing boat drifts before a crescent moon rising like a glass dome. Tidal Drift follows a humpback through clear turquoise, trailed by bubbles and distant schools of fish. Manta Ballet lets two spotted eagle rays glide through shafts of underwater light above a quiet coral reef. In each, the sea is weightless rather than dangerous, and the viewer floats with the creatures instead of watching from shore. These are the paintings most likely to lower a pulse, and they were made with that intention.

"Taking a break, slowing down, and resting is not a waste of time. It is a beautiful, necessary part of being human."

Woodland nights make up a second group. Enchanting Moonlit Deer shows a lone deer drinking at a river that mirrors a glowing sky, painted in deep indigo and cool teal. Moonlit Forest follows a figure in a textured gown who carries a small lantern beneath a full moon breaking through the canopy. Watcher of the Violet Night gives the hour to a barn owl perched on a winding branch against amethyst and violet, framed by delicate leaves. Foxes at Mossbridge Falls opens a hidden world where two copper foxes explore an arched, mossy bridge above a waterfall and pink water lilies. Darkness in these pictures is never frightening. It is the soft, protective dark of a good night's sleep, and the small sources of light within it, moon, lantern, and reflection, are there to keep watch.

Hummingbird | Acrylic

Hummingbird | Acrylic

$240

8.3" x 11.7"

A radiant burst of garden magic capturing a fleeting moment of pure grace. Enveloped in an atmospheric background of soft teals and rich magentas, a vibrant hummingbird hovers near a cluster of delicate pink blossoms. Its textured plumage gleams with bright emerald green, indigo, and violet tones as it feeds. This original painting captures the playful essence of The Sleepy Easel, bringing a joyful, airy slice of the natural world into your home to spark curiosity and calm wonder.

Daylight arrives in the final pair. Hummingbird suspends a vivid bird beside pink blossoms against soft teal and magenta, its plumage flashing emerald, indigo, and violet as it feeds. Blossoms and Blue Eggs sets a woven nest holding three pale blue eggs among branches of crisp white flowers, with the fresh, hopeful energy of an early spring morning. Both works show that her gentleness is not dependent on night. Even in full color and full light the compositions stay airy, the subjects stay still, and the mood stays close to wonder. They also reveal the range inside a practice that could easily have stayed in one register, and they give the exhibition its brightest moments, the way a storybook saves its most colorful page for the morning after the adventure.

A tender glimpse into new beginnings, wrapped in the protective comfort of nature. Set against a beautiful, vibrant backdrop of deep blues and rich turquoise, a woven bird's nest cradles three soft blue eggs. Branches decorated with crisp, detailed white blossoms frame the nest, evoking the fresh, hopeful energy of a quiet spring morning. This original painting beautifully speaks to the core identity of The Sleepy Easel, offering a calm, storybook sanctuary where the mind can settle.

Blossoms and Blue Eggs | Acrylic

Blossoms and Blue Eggs | Acrylic

$240

8.3" x 11.7"

Rest is the subject that holds the whole exhibition together, and it is where her two lives meet. Michelle has left clinical practice, yet the instincts of a nurse still steer every decision she makes at the easel: calm the room, lower the heart rate, ask nothing of someone who is already worn out. Her pictures give weary eyes somewhere gentle to settle. The Sleepy Easel exists to remind people that pausing is not wasted time but something every person needs. A visitor who moves through these ten paintings is being asked to do only that: sit down, let the guard drop, and remember how to dream. It is a small request made with real care, and in a loud year it may be the most generous thing a painting can offer.

Foxes at Mossbridge Falls | Acrylic

Foxes at Mossbridge Falls | Acrylic

$240

8.3" x 11.7"

A secret woodland oasis where the comforting sounds of nature come alive. Draped in cool teals, forest greens, and deep indigoes, this piece shows a hidden world. Two copper foxes explore an arched, mossy bridge that frames a rushing waterfall, while soft pink water lilies float calmly on the pool below. This original painting beautifully captures the magical heart of The Sleepy Easel, offering a whimsical, cozy sanctuary that invites the viewer to step out of the busy world and simply rest.

"By keeping my compositions airy and uncluttered, I leave room for the viewer's mind to take a deep breath."
