"I create through curiosity, emotion, memory, and constant self-discovery."
Michele Knox is an American abstract artist based in Olympia, Washington, whose practice reflects a unique fusion of scientific thoughtfulness and intuitive creativity. Although her affinity for art emerged later in life, she traces its roots back to early childhood memories—particularly a middle school art class that sparked her imagination and left a lasting impact. Raised in Louisville, Kentucky, and shaped by experiences living across the country, Knox carries a deep connection to the Pacific Northwest, which continues to influence her artistic voice.

I wanted to do something that had my favorite shade of blue and currently I am loving shades of purple…..So this piece is the result of that with soft and hard markings.
Her journey as an artist is one of rediscovery—a continuous process of embracing spontaneity, emotional complexity, and creative exploration without hesitation. Knox’s work thrives in this space of openness, where each piece becomes a reflection of both her inner world and the external landscapes that have inspired her. The combination of lived experience and creative curiosity shapes every brushstroke in her abstract compositions.

This is my interpretation of Gentle Movement meets chaos. Hard meets soft. I tend to show both tension and a softness in my paintings. It’s a recurrent theme.
Knox's practice centers around gestural abstraction, a form where movement, emotion, and intuition are integral to the creation of each painting. Rather than working from a predetermined plan, she allows the process to unfold organically. Her gestures respond instinctively to each moment, whether she is painting in stillness or amidst emotional turbulence. What remains consistent is her commitment to honesty—each work serves as a visual diary of feeling, expressed in real time.
"I follow feelings, letting instinct shape every mark I make."
Layered acrylics, textured surfaces, and soft transitions characterize Knox’s visual language. These techniques allow her to communicate a complex inner landscape—one shaped by healing, reflection, and a desire to convey both the serenity and intensity of human emotion. Through abstraction, she captures the essence of experiences that may be difficult to articulate in words, using form and texture as a means of emotional translation.

Color plays a vital role in her work—not only as a structural element, but also as a vehicle for emotional nuance. Knox thoughtfully blends warm and cool tones, creating contrasts that evoke both comfort and tension. Her paintings often pulse with quiet rhythm, balancing softness and energy in a way that feels both meditative and alive. The interplay of these elements invites the viewer into a space of contemplation and resonance.
"I use abstract painting to turn emotion into something shared, letting color and motion carry quiet truths that speak to both heart and mind."
"Color is the way I express what I feel inside. I use it to build form, to guide energy, and to share emotion that words cannot explain. I often work with contrast, letting soft areas meet bold ones, or stillness meet movement. I build each piece slowly, layer by layer, letting each mark respond to the one before it. While I admire artists who came before me, my work reflects the present and my own experience. With every title and stroke, I offer a place for reflection, for quiet thought, and for connection. My goal is to keep the work honest and easy to approach."
There is a lyrical quality to Knox’s abstraction that recalls the work of mid-century artists like Helen Frankenthaler and Perle Fine. Yet her voice is distinctly contemporary and personal, grounded in a desire to make emotional truth accessible. Through her use of brushwork, color, and evocative titles, she bridges the personal and the collective, offering viewers an open space to interpret, feel, and connect with her work on their own terms.

Again my interpretation of Tension and softness. I go where the brush strokes take me. This piece reminds of volatile lava.
One of the most compelling aspects of Knox’s practice is its sincerity. She resists formalism and rigid structure, instead choosing a path that honors vulnerability and intuition. This decision allows her to bypass intellectual distance and reach viewers on a visceral level. Her paintings are not abstract in the sense of being detached or cerebral—they are, in fact, raw and tender expressions of thought, energy, and mood in motion.

It’s all on us | Acrylic

I remember this so well. I painted this during the results of the current
Presidential election . It’s a pretty cool piece against the backdrop of the political tension. Ergo it’s title.
In choosing this approach, Knox invites her audience to experience abstract art as a deeply human form of communication. Her paintings become mirrors for emotion, pathways for introspection, and invitations to pause. They remind us that abstraction can be grounded in compassion and sensitivity, offering a sense of quiet presence in a visually overstimulated world.
This is a piece that represents my favorite group “Radiohead” the title is the title of my favorite James Bond Movie (Spectre) which the music didn’t make the cut for the movie……but should have.

Through each painting, Michele Knox transforms deeply personal experiences into moments of shared understanding. Her work blurs the boundary between the internal and external, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own emotional landscapes. In doing so, she reveals the power of abstraction not just as a style, but as a vessel for connection, healing, and truth.
My earlier pieces of using a lot of color. Mixed with nature that being the woods . Chaotic color with nature.

Michele Knox’s artistic journey continues to evolve as she deepens her commitment to authenticity and creative freedom. With each new work, she reaffirms her belief that art has the power to move, to soothe, and to speak to the unspoken. Her practice stands as a testament to the beauty of emotional honesty and the enduring impact of painting as an act of both discovery and communion.
