Mary Morgan

UNITED STATES

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“My artwork is influenced by internal and external experiences derived from my conscious and subconscious thoughts.”

Mary Estep Morgan is a hard-working and ambitious woman. Simultaneously she raised a family of three children, taught at a school full time for over thirty years. She finished graduate school, at the age of 52 in 2002 from Texas Woman’s University.

Snowboarding | Oil

$4,000

This artwork was inspired by the Winter Olympics and my memories of the ski slopes. It expresses the enjoyment and excitement of watching and participating in winter sports. The medium is oil on an unstretched canvas.

Mary taught all levels of art during her teaching tenure, including 14 years as an adjunct professor in the COFA at a local University. She is currently a working artist. Her primary medium is mixed-media painting. After Mary’s graduation, she was asked to teach at a local university as an adjunct professor; it was during her tenure as a professor that she began to grow as an artist.

Sunrise Springs | Oil

$3,600

This painting was inspired by spending vacation time at Sunrise Springs Resort located outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The natural colors of the area are a treat to the eyes, which definitely influenced my color choices for this painting.

Her external childhood influences include Fort Worth, Texas where she grew up, and because of her father’s work, she spent two years abroad. One year at the age of ten in Cali Colombia, and the second year in Zurich Switzerland where Mary, a senior in high school, attended the International School. She took her first art class under the direction of Rhoda Issacs.

“My artwork is about my life’s journey and the joy of living in abstract form and color.”

Upon Mary’s return from Europe, she attended a local junior college for two years before finishing her undergraduate degree at Baylor University BS fall’72. It was not until she moved to Dallas in 1989 that she was able to explore her creative goals. It was during her teaching tenure at Trinity Christian Academy that she embraced the opportunity to grow and develop as an art teacher.

Whiter Than Snow | Other

$2,100

My foundational spiritual beliefs are expressed in this mixed-media painting,
collage, and encaustic paint on canvas.

This is the first of two paintings titled "A New Creation". These paintings when viewed together are a dynamic expression of new life in every form. I have used oil and paper collages on canvas.

A New Creation 1 | Oil

$2,100

She was fortunate to work with John Millet and Chong Chu who mentored her in teaching art and in her personal artistic endeavors. TCA enabled her to obtain her graduate-level degree. She knows that she will forever be grateful for their support.

“The impact of living in three very diverse locations contributed to my love for both nature and other cultures. However, living in Europe played a key role in exposing me to art.”

“My abstract expressionist style is a process created by spontaneous mark-making.”

Mary’s sons were attending the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs when Mary was preparing her prospectus and final portfolio for graduation. During their tenure of six years, she was able to spend a good amount of time in Colorado and that is when she decided to create abstract landscapes from her personal journey.

A New Creation 2 | Oil

$2,100

This is the second painting in this diptych. The movement and colors are expressive of the elements of nature.

Some of Mary’s fondest memories were of the summers she traveled with her husband to Istanbul. Seeing the art and interacting with the culture had a definite impact on her. Although her husband was teaching University students American football, she went along to learn more about the art in that region of the world.

Heart's Desire | Oil

$3,600

This painting expresses the deepest desires of a person's heart, the desire to be respected and loved regardless of race or creed. I have used oil on raw unstretched canvas to make this artwork.

Owing to some connections with other Americans in Istanbul Mary met artist Ronald Lopez who was living there. In the summer of 2004, he invited her to teach a few students and have a solo show in Taksim, the art district of Istanbul. She was able to meet and greet people from all over the town and had a marvelous time engaging with the community. Imprints from that culture will forever stay in her heart and mind. After she returned home, she was inspired to create an Istanbul series.

My idea for this painting represents my personal journey in a colorful narrative way. As you view this work perhaps you can relate. The medium is oil on raw unstretched canvas.

Pilgrimage | Oil

$4,000

“I titled my portfolio 'Pike’s Peak' because the large mountain by the same name in Colorado Springs became a metaphor that gave me internal and external inspiration.”

Transcendence | Mixed Media

$2,600

I realized after I created this artwork that it reflects the idea of rising above.; therefore, I titled it "Transcendence" The medium here is oil with collage and gold leaf on canvas.

After Mary’s retirement in 2016, she had more time and a studio that allowed for her creative development. The past six years have been undeniably the most significant for her artistic growth and development. Her subjects include influences from nature, spiritual truths, family, literature, and everyday events.

I created this painting without a preconceived idea in mind. After finishing it, I realized that it represented the spontaneous mark-making that I discuss when describing my expressionist style. It uses collage paper, acrylic, and oil on unstretched canvas.

Just As I Am | Mixed Media

$2,500

Mary is often inspired by the past and present of other artists. Here are a few that continue to have influence: Wassily Kandinsky, Robert Rauschenberg, Joan Mitchell, Willem De Kooning and, Georgia O’Keeffe. Contemporary painters who influenced her are Cecily Brown, Jose Para, Angel Otero, and Mark Bradford.

Golden Moments | Oil

$3,600

Celebrating 50 years of marriage inspired this painting. I am reminded that life can be short, yet I feel so fortunate to have spent the past 50 years with the man I love. The medium here is oil and gold leaf on unstretched canvas

“Among all my goals, one is to continue to develop my creative processes for further growth and development, and secondly to engage in new opportunities for reaching new audiences.”
