Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“I am mystified by the power of color.”

Mark’s career as a professional artist and fine arts educator has been the primary focus of his life for almost 45 years. As a contemporary landscape painter, he implements a conscious and intuitive play of mood, light, texture, and color.

Mid-day at Monarch Beach | Oil

$2,200

24 X 30

The artwork draws inspiration from a visit to Laguna Beach, California, in September 2023. Melaleuca trees line the path along Monarch Beach that leads to Dana Point. The piece captures the essence of a mid-afternoon glow
and the contrast of spreading shadows.

As a native New Englander, raised and rooted in the diverse landscapes of the area, a painting means more when color announces its presence on the picture plane. Mark enjoys using warm and cool compliments for strong contrasts for more impact. It is not a portrayal, but an evocative response to the boundless visual beauty in the Northeast.

Impact | Oil

$3,000

30 X 40

This piece captures the power and elegance of Nature. The background sky illustrates the clearing of clouds after a storm, heralding the approaching calm. In contrast, the foreground's tumultuous surf reveals Nature's relentless force, creating a paradoxical yet harmonious composition in "Impact."

Mark prefers a larger-scale landscape over the figure. It implicates the viewer as either one with nature or alone in it, instead of sharing the experience. It becomes much more personal. His oil and acrylic works currently depict seasonal New England scenes with a bold, tactile expressionist palette and various tools and techniques, which blur and blend the lines between abstraction and realism. Mark works to combine skill and imagination to make a work that transcends both.

“Process is more important than product. Satisfaction never hinges on a certain result.”

Mark’s ideas are embedded in the material. One goal is to relate depth, atmosphere, and space, using realistic pictorial color and at the same time bring the viewer back to the two-dimensional surface and experience the tactility and texture of perceptual color. He will sometimes start work in plein-air and finish indoors or use multiple photo references as a jumping-off point.

Ancient Sentinels | Oil

$2,200

24 X 30

This piece belongs to a collection of paintings that capture the essence of Muir Woods National Monument Park in California. The Redwoods stand as towering sentinels, having safeguarded this secluded valley for centuries. Among the forest are trees that have resided in this ancient valley are over a thousand years old.

The picture portrays a crisp and clear New England afternoon at autumn's peak, rendered in a vibrant, complementary color palette with a textured finish. The composition is balanced by horizontal layers stretching from the background to the foreground and the vertical lines of trees.

Afternoon By Millers River | Oil

$3,000

30 X 40

Each location is an encounter with the land, the trees, the water, and the atmosphere. It has always given Mark a sense of connection and order. When a location intrigues and inspires him, he will paint the scene into a series using a range of themes, experimenting, and searching for new ways to learn more about the natural threads that tie the landscape together with complexity, subtlety, and balance of Nature’s compositions.

“The eye, when not told what to see, sees more, when the viewer engages and immerses, one on one, with his larger scale works.”

“Painting is not based on analysis and logic. It is about doing then thinking.”

Mark always remembers a quote one of his former painting instructors at Mass Art used to say, “Start like a bricklayer and finish like a jeweler.” With that statement as a foundational reference, he usually starts with thin layers first with large flat brushes, rags, and sponges, using broad strokes of various combinations of mediums, conte crayon sketch marks, and then off and running with layers upon layers of construction and sometimes deconstruction of the work.

Sunrise on Echo Lake Trail | Oil

$2,200

30 X 24

The artwork captures the early rays of sunrise piercing through the forest, illuminating a clear, crisp morning on a hiking trail in New England near Wachusett Mountain.

After certain periods of drying time, Mark then applies thicker layers of frosting with palette knives, paper towels, and mark-making to finish the cake. Mark has had many artistic accomplishments and achievements over the years. His formal education and training began with a BFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, a Teacher Certification in Art K through 12 from Franklin Pierce University, and an MEd in the Creative Arts in Learning from Lesley University.

Entering Muir Woods | Oil

$2,600

24 X 36

This is the first work in the Muir Woods series. This tonal painting of a variety of greens depicts a misty primeval jungle from long ago. The lush green floor to the incredible Redwood branches, covered in moss, creating a canopy over this natural gem, frozen in time, is a sight for everyone to behold.

Yet his biggest artistic accomplishment to date is the resurrection of his painting career. After retiring from almost 30 years in the classroom, teaching Art to students of all ages, Mark opened his own studio/gallery space in 2018, after many years of working out of a spare room at home. Now, the goal is to get more exposure of his work into new areas of marketing, and networking, and generate more opportunities for exhibitions and sales.

Continuing the Muir Woods series, this piece portrays the trail atop the Redwood Forest. The jungle-like ambiance is captured with the moss-draped trees and the humid air.

Canopy View Trail | Oil

$2,200

30 X 24

“Creativity is not something you are, it is something you do.”

The Old Sentinel | Oil

$2,200

30 X 24

The painting portrays an ancient tree in the early spring, symbolizing rebirth. Titled "The Old Sentinel," it mirrors life's cycle; the left side of this venerable behemoth continues to flourish and stretch skyward, while the right side of its trunk gently succumbs to the soil.

Currently, Mark is represented by The Boulder Gallery in Fitchburg, MA as a featured artist, and a Member Artist of The Copley Society of Art in Boston, MA. Recent works have been published in Studio Visit Magazine V.50, which is a juried selection of international artists, published by The Open Studio Press, and several times as a featured artist in Spotlight Contemporary Art Magazine V.30., V.36., V.38., published by The Circle Foundation for The Arts in Lyons, France.

At the height of Autumn, nature unveils a rich tapestry of colors along an age-old trail. The welcoming view entices the observer to embark on a delightful stroll through the forest.

Road to Echo Lake | Acrylic

$2,600

24 X 36

He continues his local connections to the New England area with annual submissions to Arts Worcester, Gardner Area League of Artists, Greater Gardner Art Association, Princeton Arts Society, Newburyport Art Association, and The Copley Society of Art in Boston. Mark derives joy and purpose from painting. It keeps him present in each moment and opens the mind’s eye to alternate streams of artistic consciousness.

Cloudscape |Oil

$2,600

24 X 36

This artwork exhibits color, texture, and atmospheric perspective, encapsulating the transient moments of a storm passing and the subsequent return of clear, sunny skies.

“Painting, like breathing, is necessary for me to survive and thrive. It is a constant reminder that I am a witness to life.”
