Lisa C Sachs

USA

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“I enjoy storytelling through collage, sharing the female experience, and celebrating all body types.”

Lisa started off as an aspiring painter attending the Rhode Island School of Design back in 1975. However, she quickly switched her major to Architecture during her sophomore year because she found problem-solving much more fulfilling. She’s led an illustrious career as an architect and construction manager.

Beauty and Her Beast | Mixed Media

Lynn is seated on an animal rug wrapped in tulle in her chic New York apartment overlooking her pool through wrought iron French doors with the cityscape beyond.

The artist eventually became a Fellow in both the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA). After merging her firm with an international company over fifteen years ago, she now has the time, financial independence, and health to return to her painterly roots.

Diana is enjoying an outdoor shower at her Southern California retreat but she is not alone.

Born and raised outside Boston, Lisa’s family moved to Paris when she was ten years old after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in her mid-30s. Doctors told her parents that her mother had only a few years to live and the first place that came to mind was France since she knew French and loved to cook.

“I still remember our family business and house being sold in just one day.”

All belongings of the artist and her family were packed and shipped into one container while the family boarded the last transatlantic cruise of the Queen Mary to the Port of Le Havre. The family spent four adventurous years abroad, first in Paris, then Geneva, and finally to Israel before returning to the U.S. Happily, her mother defied any medical predictions and even outlived her father.

The artist’s family then moved to Israel soon after the Six-Day War to escape growing antisemitism. While living there, she learned Hebrew and Arabic and toured many archeological and religious sites before returning to the U.S.

“The Impressionist period has always captivated me. I believe, living in Paris likely heavily influenced my appreciation for French impressionism.”

“While living in Paris and Geneva I learned French and German, visited art museums, played ‘jeu de billes,’ and indulged in crepes suzettes, escargots, and chocolate marmite.”

While an image can be captured in a photograph, I believe the mood of the moment is best expressed through collage using brightly colored and patterned papers with soft pastels and acrylics. People always ask her about her process. Surprisingly she fell into making this new work only recently and strictly by accident at the start of 2023. What kickstarted this new process?

Making New Friends | Mixed Media

$850

30 X 20

Dogs make friends in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco in front of a modernized Victorian rowhouse.

During the pandemic, her plein air painting group started to meet monthly via Zoom, generating new topics each month, and when the leader of the group died suddenly of a heart attack after contracting COVID, Urbanscapes was assigned as the next topic to honor Rick, a city planner.

Mara | Mixed Media

$850

30 X 22

Shortly thereafter, her daughter bought some amazing handmade papers from Nepal for Lisa’s birthday after receiving a gift wrapped in hand-printed Xmas Chanukah paper. The brightly colored Nepalese papers inspired Lisa’s first piece in 2023 titled, Urbanscape. She is currently creating her 42nd collage.

“What excites me the most is the problem-solving aspect of this new work.”

Mothers Day | Mixed Media

$850

30 X 20

Sachs begins with a 20- to 25-minute life drawing sketched during a weekly live model studio session, cuts the figure out, and places it on the floor to see what story it inspires. One or two are selected, a setting comes to mind, and then a color palette is chosen. That’s when the creations come to life.

Trick or Treat | Mixed Media

$850

30 X 20

Recreating the effect of a straw hat or basket, wrought iron windows, folded towels, tile floors, water spray, or even an ocean water’s edge is a thrilling process for Lisa. This type of challenge is what she loves the most. It also reminds her of her architectural days that she spent building models. The models inspire stories that she incorporates into her work satisfying her early interests in paper dolls and set design, and her passion for solving problems.

Geishas | Mixed Media

$850

30 X 20

Carla and Zoey, 2 Geishas on break between dress changes, in a Japanese setting with bridge and shoji screen in background.

“I have now come full circle - from artist to architect to builder and now back to artist.”
