“I seek to recognize every moment in everyday life, and it spurs me into a state of action.”
Sacramento-based artist Lauren Wiseman creates art to connect with her surroundings and experiences in life and nature. Through these practices, Wiseman is inspired to take the next step and actively be a steward of her beloved places and communities.

On a chilly fall morning, we brought out these boba-like balls for the preschoolers. I noticed the sun rising over the roof of our school, and I scooped up a bottle as the students were absorbed in their experience. The sunlight hit the bottle in what felt like an explosion of color. The light tumbled around inside the bottle through the colored beads; at that moment, I felt like I had all the inspiration in the world to give to my students.

Wiseman creates her pieces through oils and watercolors. The interplay between water, light, and nature is the main focus of her work. She uses her pieces to study their properties. She is drawn to micro-scapes, zooming in up close to the intricacy of nature and its micro-interactions. These are the building blocks for the ecosystem as a whole.

Wild nature creeps through the cracks of our pristine segmented world. Her forces making their way through the nooks and crannies, a small creek becomes the last refuge for many. We must find the balance between order and wilderness and provide sanctuary for those that need it—time to climb back over the fence and get to work.

Many of her pieces delve into the power of reflection, surfaces, and depth. Its most recent iteration, "Bottle of Ideas," explores how far she can push the idea of light on a micro-scale. She draws inspiration from artists like Joaquin Sorolla, Tom Thompson, Clifford How, Hayao Miyazaki, Alyssa Monks, Lisa Lebofsky, and Adam Wolpert.
“I studied Plein air painting under Adam Wolpert and grew as an artist alongside Charlotte Pollock.”
It is essential in Wiseman's studio work to let the piece grow organically out of the canvas, moving thin layers of oil paint to sculpt the scene. As the piece evolves, she focuses on her memories of the space. Feelings such as the sun's warmth on her back, the smell of freshly brewed coffee, the crunch of peanut butter toast, or the distant echo of a harbor seal all come together to layer a sense of place and presence in her paintings.

Know Thyself | Oil

The power of a single spot on the planet continuously draws you back. The mirror sits on the edge of the world, inviting you to peer in again to see who you are this time. The ocean crashes on smooth stones, and the seals howl in the distance.
" Your sacred space is where you find yourself again and again" - Joseph Campbell.

The smell of coffee, the warmth of the mug, and the pop of the toaster. Brief yet welcome sunlight streams in on new beginnings, a bustling city ripe with possibilities. The small fuzzy boy takes full advantage of the sun-warmed cushion. It's high time for another adventure.

Once a sturdy foundation is set, water and light come to the forefront. Wiseman utilizes thick dabs of colorful paint to illustrate the interactions of the light. The piece begins to illuminate, and the memory solidifies. On the grand scale, all her work is tied together by personal experience and the pursuit of capturing "beauty otherwise unseen" - Hayao Miyazaki.
“My pieces are rooted in memory and immersion using a combination of Plein Air and studio work. I scale up these interactions in celebration of nature's forces.”
“My work is a celebration of those fleeting seconds in time when you catch yourself thinking, this, I never want to leave this moment right here. I never want to forget how I feel. In these moments, we are entirely present, connected with nature in all its complexity.”
In 2009 Lauren's late father, a lifelong Kansan, lent her a book. "Now I'll want this back." He told her, looking up through bushy eyebrows as he scribbled 'Return to Bill Wiseman' in the front. He knew his daughter all too well. It was called "Wild Trees: A Story of Passion and Daring" By Richard Preston. A journey into the unknown, it told the story of the first scientists to study the canopies of the California coastal redwood forests and the search for the tallest tree in the world. It told of misty secret groves, ancient giants, and blooming gardens hundreds of feet in the air, unseen and untouched by human hands.

Puffs of breath hang in the air, running late to put out the breakfast for the hungry travelers. But sometimes, the world stops you dead in your tracks. Nature crafts all aspects of her beauty, from sweeping vistas and clouds in the sky to the last dewdrop on a petal. Take a moment to admire all the hard work she's put in. Then set out breakfast.

She kept thinking, 'I've got to get out there. I've got to see this world for myself.' There is no knowing if he realized it at the time, but an idea had been planted and was taking root. This celebration of ecosystems and science has been a constant thread of inspiration throughout Lauren's artistic life, forever changed by one little book. The following year she visited Big Sur, California, painting at Esalen Institute, and her fate was sealed.

The coffee grinder rumbles, it's time for the all too familiar 4pm espresso. The tomatoes burst with flavor and the bread crunches, leaving toasty crumbs on the plate. The barista sets down the coffee with a clink, she has a tattoo of a feather behind her ear. Time to return to the studio. Now, no matter the weather, you will always have a sunny window waiting for you.

Wiseman studied painting and art history in Florence, Italy, in 2013 and earned a Bachelor of Science in 2015 from Baker University in Ecology and Studio Art. In addition, she studied the figure at the University of Kansas with Judith McCrea for two years.
The clock was about to strike midnight, and we spent the day dancing with friends atop the mountain and swimming into the bright blue sky. The smell of potluck delights wafts through the air as champagne bubbles pop bright and sour on the tongue. The party lights glimmer in the trees as the funk band strikes up their set; oh, if we could stay here forever, but the bus has arrived. It's time to head back down the mountain.

Sometimes it's hard to see beyond our routines; we slowly build up the walls around ourselves until it becomes difficult to see beyond our self-imposed boundaries. So take off the lid, and let your life breathe a little. You may find that you are thriving.

Finally, in 2018, her head swimming with ideas of ferns, forest giants, crashing oceans, and paint, she packed up all her belongings and headed out of Kansas, her lifelong home, searching for her own journey into the unknown. Lauren landed in Seaside, California, at the Historic Landmark Bed and Breakfast, a craftsman inn run by artists.
Salty spray stinging your nose, the damp cold of coastal nights, and the low rumblings of the ocean below. Your shoes crunch on the path, dark and cold, hair wet from the baths. Yet you follow the lights, knowing they will take you to a place where hot coffee, good friends, and warm peanut
butter toast awaits.

Her art pieces arise from moments of connectedness, big and small, always in awe of the sheer power and complexity of the natural world. The scent of rain hung heavy and fresh in the air, the first day of the new year scrubbed clean and ready for whatever may come. There! Up on the hill lay a hulking old redwood trunk swathed in a thick carpet of green moss. The emerald carpet dotted with thousands of little white mushroom caps, an entire city nestled in the fronds. Teeming with life even in death
