Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“In Buddhism, paradoxes are used to reduce and silence thoughts to make room for deeper experiences, in case of Buddhism, it is the experience of spiritual awakening.”

Katrin Loy was gratuated from the academy of fine arts in Düsseldorf and is a master student of Professor Jannis Kounellis. She lives and works in Munich since 2002. Jannis Kounellis endeavored to enable his students, to tell the newly emerging epic not in descriptive details but with poetic power ("...das sich neu abzeichnende Epos nicht in deskriptiven Details sondern mit poetischer Kraft zu erzählen.") (Quote from the catalog for the exhibition "Meisterschülerinnen der Klasse Jannis Kounellis", Kunstverein Münsterland 2001).

The sea is preferred as a place of security, the person seems to float.

In the artistic work of Katrin Loy, the essence and soul of man is at the centre, his struggle for a vision, his utopias and abysses, his confrontation with the self and the encounter with the other. It arises both from spontaneously emerging inner images as well as from ideas about the psychic and intuitive functions of man and about his archaic experiences.

The crocodile and the tortoise are seemingly archaic animals that convey threat and longevity.

It also feeds on a state of mind and emotions, in which consciousness walks on the small degree between the conscious and the subconscious, revealing something like an inner myth, that leaves its mark in the form of artistic work. This process takes place in the hope that these traces, which have become visible in this way, will also touch or even infect the other, ideally a form of infection, that allows the viewer to immerse himself in his own inner myth.

“I am touched and influenced by Jannis Kounellis poetic view of art and culture.”

The artist is interested in both, the individual and the collective myth, and the area, in which both overlap and coexist. Collective myths are created from individual myths, and collective myths in turn feed the experience of the individual myth.

The snake is also a seemingly archaic animal that seems both menacing and mysterious at the same time.

The pelican fits harmoniously into the landscape and seems to create a secret private place.

Both the superimposition and the digital alienation of the images play a decisive role in her photographic work, since she is not concerned with the depiction of the found reality, but with the new imagery created by associative overlay or alienation of the original photographic image.

“Due to her intensive preoccupation with psychoanalysis, the artist assumes, that our perception of reality is strongly influenced by our projections and associations, which are shaped by our individual experiences, especially our early experiences, that we can hardly remember.”

“The so-called inner myth designates the line of development underlying every human incarnation, which is, however, predominantly unconscious.”

Our perception and interpretation of reality is shaped to a large extend by our unconscious. In psychoanalysis one speaks of the individual unconscious and the collective unconscious. The individual unconscious forms the collective unconscious and at the same time the individual unconscious accesses collective contents.

The peacock seems to merge with its surroundings and radiates lightness.

The artist works in a process-oriented manner, which means that she is strongly guided by her intuition. Only after an image has been created, it is possible for her to understand, what she actually did and why. This is how the creative process is shaped by diving into unconscious spheres and turns into a creative adventure.

Masses of water seem to threaten to flood the church dome.

One might ask: Does the form in which we perceive the world sensually, thinking, feeling and intuitively grasp a composition of a perception of reality and associative-projective imagination actually correspond? And what exactly corresponds to reality and what corresponds to imagination? And what exactly is reality and what is imagination? Ultimately, everything is a matter of consciousness... therefore, it is probably both and neither of them, and at the same time it is neither both nor neither of them... a PARADOX... life is just a dream of a higher AWAKENING...

The small temple conveys something eerie and at the same time could be a place of security.

The landscape seems to be flooded by masses of water and is at the same time a place of longing.

"What if seas could sink into seas?" The sea as a central metaphor encompasses a pool of possible associations, fantasies, and interpretations such as "the unconscious," "the hidden," "the mysterious," "the incomprehensible," "the origin," "the primordial ground," "the vessel," "the container," "the immersion in oneself and in the world," and others, which are offered to the viewer in the form of this photographic image series.

The landscape offers a distant view that conveys clarity and seems to be filled with light.

In the “Sunken Seas” series, the artist is concerned with creating images that have a high emotional and atmospheric effect in order to captivate the viewer. The idea of what it would be like, if seas could sink into seas, corresponds to a paradoxical idea.

The image could depict the path from the galaxy to the embodiment of the soul.

“I work photographically with the overlay of images, inverted images and digital image processing.”
