Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“There is no objective truth defining the perceived value of art.”

The aim of Volkvard’s artwork is to inspire any individual person to dig into their own emotional world. The human emotions are rich in variety and the very same painting can inspire a diversity of very different emotions, or even numbness. The value of an artwork is – in the artist’s opinion - primarily created in the mind of the viewer.

We drive along straight roads and turn around sharp corners. We also have a lot of human machine-produced items with sharp corners and straight lines around us all the time.
Why not relax our eyes and mind from all this machine manufactured sharpness by looking at some beautiful rounded soft shapes of a woman? Whoever created this world did not make straight lines and sharp corners, but humans do.

Volkvard, as an artist, hope to be the catalyser of diverse personal experiences. The single “correct” intellectual interpretation of an artwork is not very interesting, as we experience everything so different.

Life is full of challenges and brutal experiences. It is tempting to give up and keep the bad news out of your mind by dissociating yourself from all this mess, by dreaming that you are living in a different world where this does not exist.
A healthy alternative is the opposite: To train your brain to deal with the adversity and finding strength in embracing chaos and contemplating yourself as a calm anchor in the midst of it all.
I hope this painting may inspire you to find your inner peace.

Accepting the emotional diversity among us is the key message in his art. This does not mean that curators are not necessary, on the contrary, they have the immense task to try to help us finding our personal preferences among a vast diversity of expressions.

“I paint because I have a passion for it.”

Painting was always a side-activity as Volkvard was busy doing his job as medical doctor and scientist. He has now lived approximately 2/3rds of his life (statistically speaking). And finally, he got the opportunity and courage to “jump out of the closet” and explore his artistic path.

Some people believe in dominance and conflict as a the best ruling principle in the world. Others have said that "love can move mountains". Whatever you believe in, I hope that this painting may inspire you and others to reflect over how to spread more compassion and care for loved ones and the world.

In our time we have defined a human being as a mainly intellectual creature where our most important competitive survival skill is our superior brain. Most people still have this attitude in a time where the human race has exploded to 8 billion people and the resulting climate changes are threatening our entire existence. What is the reason? Men and women seem to be outside control when we eye opportunities for physical love. Our reproduction is dominated by our inherited animal brain.

In his early days as a painter, he had the naive thought, that may be the quality or value of art could perhaps be defined by objective criteria. Therefore, he set himself the goal to examine which of his paintings was liked the most (or the least) by the audiences looking at his paintings.

“There are so many aspects of the human life and psyche that have not yet been expressed in paintings. This is the vision for my work as a painter.”

“When it comes to the emotional impact, people very often get completely different associations and experiences.”

As a scientist it was natural for him to distribute questionnaires and analyse how much or how little his paintings were liked by each single individual. The overall conclusion was very surprising for him in these early days - three decades ago.

Thinking of a warm summer day sitting in the grass and forgetting the dark winter, rain, and cold wind. What is a better escape than doing some completely useless things like blowing flower seeds and enjoy how they glitter in the sunshine while observing how far away they can spread in the mild wind.

For all his single paintings there were some people who liked them and other people who did not liked them very much. These results were very liberating for Volkvard, because from then on, he knew that he should focus on only making paintings that he liked himself and felt passionate about. This has kept his motivation high for painting in all these years.

The little boy said to himself: Why are all the people around me always telling me what to do? Why can’t I decide something for myself?
When I grow up, I want to rule over my own life, and I do not want to listen to others if they do not listen to me.

When I grow up, I want to rule over my own life, and I do not want to listen to others if they do not listen to me.

To understand a little more, he later recorded videos where he asked single persons, not what they intellectually saw in a specific painting, but what they felt in the moment when they observed it. The conclusion from this was that people may agree “intellectually” on what forms, colours or figures they saw in a painting.

Can colours be beautiful? Can women be beautiful? Can men be innocent? What happens to you when I combine the three in one painting?

Have you ever felt that the sweet love was somewhat dangerous? That you had a strong temptation, but that you were stepping on "unknown territory"? What did you do with this feeling? Did you proceed or did you escape the scene? Whatever you did - did you regret it afterwards?

His interviews further revealed that these personal emotional experiences were inspired from their own personal life. This is the reason why we must allow ourselves for accept the diversity of our emotions as the true value of a specific painting. The value of paintings cannot be determined neither by objective nor by democratic principles. It will always be a personal matter only. He has now painted semi-professionally for three decades.

A tango is filled with a mixture of tension, intimacy, and energy. If life is a dance, has there been any long-lasting results of your dancing? Was it all planned or did it just happen? Do you like the dance of life?

Finally, he could now focus on his passion for painting. He now has the opportunity to finetune all the aspects of the creational process and experiment with new ways of expression, composition, and techniques.

The relaxation and mental calm after intimate encounters with your loved one are for most people one of the golden moments of everyday life. It may be felt like the time has stopped. Some may also feel that this is the moment where all the stressed feelings have disappeared for a little while. How is it for you?
How do you personally feel after sex? Do you identify with any of the women in the painting?

“It does not create a lot of value for the individual person to have only one interpretation.”
