Jaimie Barchus

USA

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“By setting the mood for my pieces early, I ultimately create artwork that radiates a sensation of life.”

Jaimie Barchus is a self-taught artist based in Washington State, with a focus on wildlife art. Working primarily with pastels, colored pencils, and acrylic, Jaimie creates realistic adaptations of nature and its inhabitants.

Chikondi means love in the language Nyanja. One of my greatest joys is motherhood. Although mother-child relationships vary within the wildlife world, I find the way each species interacts with their offspring is intriguing.

Through her artwork, Jaimie strives to capture the grace and power of nature, helping viewers appreciate the beauty and diversity of the world. Jaimie's creative process gives voice to her imagination to create pieces that evoke emotion and admiration.

In the midst of working on my North American wildlife series, my sister and I visited the Oregon zoo. While we were there, we spent a lot of time observing the Tigers. At one point, one of them stopped and looked towards me just as I snapped the photo. Once I saw the picture on my computer screen, I knew it was time to take a break from the North American series. Little did I know this painting would become one of the staple pieces of my gallery collection.

Further acquaintance with Jaimie’s unique biography and the sources/inspirations behind her work reveals an artist who has passion and solid technique that blends with her great admiration for animals to provide the world with beautiful portrayals in art.

“I have grown in my technique and approach through my artistic journey.”

Jaimie is originally from Nevada and relocated to Washington State in the late 1990s. Always having had a passion for art and wildlife, she enjoys capturing the beauty of the world as she sees it.

When I relocated to the Pacific NW, I experienced fall in a whole new light. The variance of colors is awe-inspiring. The season quickly became my favorite and I always knew at some point I would incorporate it into one of my drawings. I chose the bobcat simply because the color of the cat is fitting to the season.

This piece is inspired by the movie Holiday in the Wild, which tells a story of a woman who embarks on a journey in Africa, finding herself on an elephant reserve nursing an orphaned young elephant named Manu. I wanted to show the youthful playfulness of the calf’s along with the majestic demeanor of the adults. There was a certain sense of joy I hoped this piece would portray, because there was a lot of joy that went into creating the personalities of each animal I completed in the herd

As Jaimie has continued to develop her personal style, she has experimented with different mediums, adapting each to her signature artistic expression. Her earlier works are mostly done with colored pencils which later evolved into pastels and acrylic.

“Hoping to bring light to the notion of capturing the beauty and essence of wildlife, I strive to introduce my viewers to the world of wildlife through my eyes.”

“Most recently, I have begun learning the world of digital art, opening up new possibilities for my art to grow into new depths and reach new audiences.”

Jaimie draws inspiration from around the world. Taking time to carefully research her subjects, habitats, and trademarks, she creates each piece with a mindset of capturing the unique beauty of each animal.

Winter Solstice | Acrylic

After a three year break from my art, I was more than ready to dust off my skills! Ready to try something new, I started exploring different mediums. This particular painting was my first attempt with acrylic. I’ve always found wolves to be one of the most daunting yet beautiful animals. I’ve always felt they had a sense of mystery, lurking in the thick forests, calling to members of their packs with that distinct howl.

In an uncommon approach, Jaimie completes the eyes as her first step and strives to perfect them in order to reflect the emotions of the animal. She finds the endless opportunities to capture the beauty of wildlife of this world are not only exciting but also overwhelming.

Just outside of my hometown in Nevada, wild horses roam the shores of Walker Lake. It’s not uncommon to see large herds feeding on the green grasses that border the southern side of the lake. Anytime I travel back to Nevada, I watch for the herds at the lake and it’s not often I’m disappointed. I decided to create an abstract background, leaving it up to the perception of my viewers. Some have told me they see smoke or dust, others tall standing trees backlit by sunshine.

For Jaimie, the world is so full of wonderful possibilities. She believes that everyone is a part of a living, breathing canvas that has the ability to captivate and awe the viewers at any moment in time. You just need to have the eyes to take a look.

I had already prepped the canvas to paint a zebra, however the muted golden tones set the perfect base for the colors and variations of the elephant’s skin and eyes. It reminded me of the sun-kissed dust kicked up from the powerful stride of the gentle giant, as it walks through the African safari. This painting truly evolved as it went along. With no set plan I simply allowed my creative mind to flow into the canvas.

“As an artist, I am constantly on the lookout for anything that may bring me inspiration.”

When I initially planned this piece, the zebra was supposed to be looking over its back. As it continued to develop however, I changed direction and decided to simply have the animal looking to the side. It felt more natural with the angle of the head. This drawing took only one month to complete, which is quicker than most of my pieces. I had a great stride through the process and enjoyed the time I spent working on it.

Through her work, Jaimie strives to find a balance between expression and technique, pushing the boundaries of her craft. Through growth, her artwork continues to evolve and expand, continually refining her vision along the way.

As my first statement piece, my goal was to raise awareness that these beautiful creatures are either critically endangered or threatened due to poaching, habitat loss and other factors. The eyes are the windows to the soul. I have always started my pieces by working on the eyes first. Keeping the focus on the eyes, each animal was completed with the idea of looking into what makes each one special.

She continues to strive to illustrate the vivid majesty of wildlife, imbuing the concept of natural enlightenment in each and every composition she creates. By utilizing the perfect blend of artistic techniques and expressive styles, Jaimie Barchus invites the viewer to experience and appreciate the beauty of nature.

In my quest to broaden my art techniques, I stumbled across artists using tablets and I instantly became inspired! Drawing in the Procreate app is very much like drawing on paper. Using a digital pen, I have to choose the correct colors and blend. I've always found pandas to be endearing and carefree. The movement of the white fur, contrasted with the variations of the bamboo leaves gives this piece interest and life.

“Once a vision is sparked in my mind, I don’t take lightly my approach to fine-tuning every detail in bringing my creation to life.”
