QATAR

“To me, painting is to feel free, to feel expressive, and to get lost in colors and creative possibilities. It’s an outlet.”
Born and raised in Doha, Qatar, Hessa Al Hitmi has always had a strong passion for art. She enrolled in her first art drawing class when she was only 5 years old, and a new imaginative world opened up and became her reality. Growing up in Qatar, Hessa felt inspired by the animals, trees, and sea life around her. She pursued a creative path throughout her life and when she isn’t painting, you can find her creating films and digital content as well as graphic designing.
Sidra | Acrylic
Named after Qatar’s national tree. The gold reflection on the tree leaves is a depiction of a brightly golden sunset. Playing around with pattern printing, the artist created a fun backdrop of gold and silver inspired by Qatar’s traditional “Sadu” pattern. Leaves falling from the tree’s branches awakens the feeling of rebirth and change.
Currently a full-time student, Hessa only practices art as a part-time hobby. Her love for art has taken precedence as a therapeutic coping mechanism with the disorder of life throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Painting has become an outlet for Hessa’s current emotional state and experiences. Even though it is only a part-time endeavour, it is something that plays a big role in her life and how she deals with stresses and uncertainties.
Strong Deer | Acrylic
This piece started off as an experiment with geometrical forms and turned into something very special. It features a lot of negative space allowing the viewer to focus only on the strong bronze deer. The artwork and the colors are carefully picked to awaken strength, power, and feelings of stability.
From a young age, this talented artist found comfort and consolation through her vivid brushstrokes on a canvas. Being an avid art history enthusiast and reader, Hessa was exposed to many different styles and artistic eras, that she loves to try out. Experimenting with different mediums, styles, and techniques has always been the most enjoyable part of the process for her. At first, a means of expressing her feelings and emotions, and now, an intensified activity that encapsulates much meaning and engages the viewer.
“I hope my works make my audience feel happy, just as much as they make me feel happy.”
Hessa mainly specializes in acrylic on canvas, applied with a palette knife, stencils, and brushes. Her work showcases a variety of experimentation that includes brushstroke techniques, color combinations, styles, and juxtaposition. When you look at her art, it is clear that Hessa does feel a stronger attraction to geometrical shapes, abstract art, and bold colors; inspired by Monet, Picasso, and Jackson Pollock.

Geometric Nature | Acrylic
A deconstructed landscape that features a bright blue sky, a monstrous mountain, and a tree in the foreground. The juxtaposition of the horizontal lines on the sky and the triangular geometrical shapes of the landscape creates a beautiful interactive experience. The use of color and lines creates an almost 3 Dimensional effect.
This was a fun experiment of a self portrait. On the one side is a robot-like portrait that portrays the artist’s intellectual and formal side. Compared to the other side that shows the quirky, fun, and creative side of the artist’s personality.

Self Portrait | Acrylic
Driven by inspiration and intuition, the clever artist won’t start off with a clear idea of what the end product will look like. Rather, she picks colors, images, and techniques as the painting process continues. The painting will start to take form in a very natural and intuitive way - not planned, just carefully manufactured, and constructed – flowing out of Hessa’s mind.
“Human characters and emotions share similarities, in one way or the other, to different animals and natural scenes. I like to capture these likenesses and pour human emotion into them.”
Garnering inspiration from people around her and her own emotions, Hessa paints as she feels. She only puts paint on a canvas when she feels inspired to do so, or when she needs to express emotions that stir within her. As a result, her paintings are a raw depiction of what she is going through at the present moment – sometimes, rough, thick blotches of colorful paint make its way onto the canvas and other times, thin strokes of earthy colors appear in neatly placed geometrical forms.
A golden thread that is pulled throughout Hessa’s artwork is bold color, vibrancy, and beautiful jumping emotion. An honest and true reflection of who the artist is - fun, vibrant, passionate, positive, and compassionate.

Joy | Acrylic
This artwork was created with a palette knife to awake joy, happiness, and triumph. It is a true reflection of the artist’s state of mind at the time of painting. The bright yellow flower petals glisten in the sun. Thick brush strokes reinforce the feeling of abundance and joy.

Enchanted Garden | Acrylic
The use of a palette knife and vibrant colors in this enchanted garden scene is executed perfectly. Thick layering of a simplistic color theme shows a sunset sky behind early spring trees. A successful composition that awakens enlightenment and joy.
The audience can see Hessa’s thoughts and emotions through her art, as each canvas is a transparent view into her heart at a specific point in her private life.
Inspired by Monet and painted on an early morning, the artist portrays a feeling of true tranquility and inspiration. Using a palette knife, she creates a gorgeously detailed scene of small water lilies floating in a mass of water. Splashes of yellow and light green brightens up the entire scene.

Water Lilies | Acrylic

Pure | Acrylic
A large bouquet of pink and white flowers seen from above. Bursting at the seams, this painting shows an abundance of love, ultimately awakening a feeling of generosity and gratitude.
When we do take a closer look at the different compositions, it seems as though the artist is very inspired by nature; landscapes, ocean life, animals, flowers, water, and trees. Since Hessa gathers inspiration from people around her too, it is fair for us to assume that she associates elements around her to encapsulate characteristics of these portrayed natural objects and compositions.
The artist plays around with texture really well in this beautiful depiction of flowers. In the background - a thin, almost 2 dimensional background, In the foreground - a thick layering of bold red hues and green leaves.

Red Gift | Acrylic
Hessa has achieved a perfect balance between emotion, abstractionism, color, and expressiveness in her artwork. As she progresses in her life, so does her art – and it is a wondrous journey to witness.

Ocean Bubbles | Watercolor
A glimpse into different parts of the ocean, an assembly of ocean life. Sea creatures are placed in bubble-like time capsules as if they were plucked from the ocean and released into mid air. The piece is created to awaken feelings of tranquility, freedom, and calm.
“I don’t usually have an idea of what I want the painting to look like or what colors to use, it all happens very naturally.”
