SWEDEN
_p.png)
“I met my wife at a painting course.”
Fine art painter Hakan Bremberg was born in Umeå, a town in the northern part of Sweden, and grew up in the nearby Holmsund. Umeå today has about 130 000 inhabitants but at the time when this artist was born, there were only about 20 000 persons living there and 2 500 in Holmsund.
Röd näckros (Red water lilie)
| Oil
$1,100
23 X
This is my memory of rare red water lilies. A rough simplification to enhance the wild feeling from when I first saw such flowers.1
His friend urged him to come and see what he was doing in the evenings. The friend was an accomplished fine art painter with several exhibitions already and Hakan was aiming at the same number – at least.
Glas och sten (Glass and rock) | Oil
$900
28 X 20
This is my version of one of the 12th century windows at the Våmb church. The church is small but has a feeling of old history.
Many pencil sketches left his hands. This skill, however, was not the kind that you could make a living from, people thought. Art was not something that should be considered. That was a common opinion. So this artist choose to become someone accepted.
“I was, and still is, keen on everything. My interest in sketching and painting was obvious.”
He studied to become a teacher, an economist, a personal manager, and so on. Many years later Hakan and his wife Lisbeth realized that they had to do something different from their ordinary jobs so they started a gym (Caribia Gym in Skövde) and worked there for three years alongside normal work.

Flaska (Bottle) | Oil
$600
18 X 15
I saw an old and not so straight bottle. A piece of art. Some time later I let my fascination develope into this piece of art.
This is my version of vikings on the way to new adventures in the foreign country wihout name and without histoty in the minds of the vikings. Soon to change...

Mot fjärran mål (Towards distant destinations) | Oil
$700

He opened Bremberg Electronics and for a couple of years, he distributed all kinds of software. Still, nothing seemed to be quite what he was looking for. He along with his wife began painting again. This time for real. That was it! Now they knew what they were going to do for the rest of their lives.
“I attended a four-year course in fine art painting and was very pleased with what I got from it.”
“The creation of paintings was just as thrilling as we had been hoping.”
Whenever an empty canvas or paper emerged, they almost instantly saw something inside themselves that could be shaped into a finished painting. This was what they had dreamed of for so long.

Ljuslykta (Candle light) | Oil
$500
14 X 11
This is our candle light. It is placed on a step in a staircase in our home. I had seen it for years, but not enough to get the idea to turn it into a painting. Not until this time when I took the time to examine it a bit more...
The couple exhibited in their own shows and sold quite a lot of artworks. But – after some years a move to the very south of Sweden was a way to reach more customers.

På ytan (On the surface) | Oil
$1,100
29 X 24
We had visited Fagertärn, the little lake in the wildernes of Sweden. This is the place where all red water lilies in the world originally come from. After quite a few years, I painted this – a memory of the beautiful lake. I tried to maintain the feeling from that place.
Finally, they lived where the art lovers lived or came to. But other artists had been thinking the same and now Hakan and Lisbeth have to compete with more than 1000 other artists to get attention. Not the easiest thing to do.
Me and Lisbeth took a walk in Mariestad, Sweden. After perhaps fifteen minutes we arrived to a harbour. There were a lot of people moving around.Across the water I saw this ship. Their owner and his family were busy and moved around the boat, but I did not notice them. All I saw was this beautiful ship. This did not leave me, so the next day I started to paint it.

I hamn (In the harbour) | Oil
$800
24 X 20
“I developed a way of producing my artworks without doing them as if I am- a factory.”

Vit skönhet (White beauty) | Oil
$700
22 X 18
This view was given me at the dinner table. The bottle and the flower lined up perfectly...
They had to have a ”soul”, making the viewers start thinking, putting themselves into the painting, and enjoying it. The work must include a specific feeling and a scene that pleased the viewers.
This is a view from my work area. The bottles were empty and the tin had been used to wash brushes in. It struck me that this was a perfect idea for an oil painting...

Burken (The tin) | Oil
$500
22 X 19
Once he realized this he felt the rest became trickier than he thought, but this was a challenge he loved. The following paintings did appeal to others and began to sell better than before.

Brytpunkt (Breaking point) |Oil
$700
22 X 19
This is my memory of the nature in my home town, Holmsund. Only one thing – it does not look like this anymore. There are houses, boats and cars where this once could be seen. Sorry.
“The only problem today is to come up with an idea of what to paint. This was not an issue the first ten years but it is now.”
