Franziska Barth

GERMANY

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“Every art object coming from nature has its own story that becomes apparent during my creative process.”

Franziska’s passion is to show the beautiful, impressive, and unique artwork nature gave us. Her favorite material is wood as it gives an extraordinary warm and cozy feeling and has an impressive visual appearance.

The Composer | Wood Carving

NA

66 X 22

The old oak board with its carves and cracks tells the story of an eventful life of good and bad moments. The three metal rods are a symbol for the three important phases of life, childhood, adulthood and age. Every metal rod has a different sound. This in combination tells the story of life.

There are more than 25k different types of wood. Franziska decided to only use domestic wood coming from Germany. She uses wood that no one needs anymore and is meant for burning or composting. The people who dispose of these pieces of wood are not able to see the potential or are not interested in or don’t see any usage.

Transience | Wood Carving

NA

38 X 13

Transience shows two sites of life, the contrary of old and new of continuity and renewal. The old site left originally with the rusty bolts shows the resistance and the new site that is polished with the shiny bolts shows a restart.

Wood is impressive. It can be very old as the trees can last several hundred years if mankind allows them to be and to grow. So, a piece of wood Franziska finds and starts to work on can be up to a hundred years old or more.

“When I start working on a simple piece of wood, I am not aware of the result until I finish the creative process.”

Every piece of wood is different in its feeling, scent, and its wood grain. A piece of wood coming from an apple tree has a fruity scent, even if it is old and dried. A piece of linden has a very weird scent, that can only be smelled during work. And every piece of wood needs a different way to handle it.

Mountains | Wood Carving

NA

17 X 12

Two rocks are shown that belong to one mountain. The big crevice seems to be insurmountable but there is a way to the other side. The combination of wood from the yew tree and the used ball of strong metal tells the story that differences will always find a way to build a symbiotic relationship.

Coming from the earth this little root became a little fish after the creative process. It is nearly impressive a copy of a wrasse.

Little fish | Wood Carving

In her art objects, she likes to show that nature creates impressive artworks during growth and development, during the whole lifecycle. To show this a natural object doesn’t need to be ground in high perfection to show his spirit and his heart.

“My creative process can take a few hours when the spirit can be seen on the first view, or it can take several days or weeks to find out what the story is that the piece of wood is telling.”

“My passion is to bring nature's beauty to the people and to delight the people with a warm feeling of natural materials.”

The result of this creative process is a unique natural artwork. And sometimes when there is no development of relationship between her and the piece of wood the process is stopped, and the wood is stored until it likes to tell the story.

Tea Time | Wood Carving

NA

22 X 18

This artwork coming from a birch tree shows the tea time, a few minutes past nine o'clock, or when it will be turned to the other side a few minutes before three o'clock.

The piece of wood tells her the story during the process, it tells her where to cut, to grind, to polish. After finishing, both, the piece of wood and her become one and the name of the artwork is given. For example, the composer. It looked like an old, damaged, partly uninteresting, and dirty piece of wood. She started to grind it and it began to tell her the story.

Couple | Wood Carving

NA

24 X 19

Two pieces of a burl that broke during the creative process. The small one is a symbol for "Her" and the bigger one is a symbol for "Him." Both belong together and build a couple.

The story of a strong tree, where the piece of wood was one of the big branches, well-formed in an even curve. During a big storm, it broke down and was lying for a long time on the floor in a big garden. The owner of the garden only saw a broken branch, ignored the interesting statue and brought it to the gardener for disposal. Franziska found it shortly before disposal and created beautiful artwork with it.

Stairs that guide everywhere. Not every time in life there is a need for handrails. In some situations of life, a step to the next life phase can be done free and without a safety grid. Stable wood and strong metal guide to the next phase of life.

Stairs | Wood Carving

NA

12 X 10

“By doing this creative work with natural materials I have a physical result of my work in my hands.”

Cube | Wood Carving

NA

17 X 10

Geometric wooden but free form. The cube seems to be flying. The ropes of metal are a symbol of delicate coherence in a solid bounded space.
Everything belongs to each other and nothing can exist without the other.

The greatest combination for her is the combination of wood and metal. The warm and smooth wood in contrary to the cold and solid metal is impressing her. Both materials come from nature, and have the same origin. And nearly all of her art objects show a combination of wood and metal.

Impressing massive sculpture that shows a phoenix or firebird that is painted by nature. The piece of wood is torn open at the position where the beak of the firebird is. It seems that the phoenix is raising his unique noise.

Phoenix | Wood Carving

NA

26 X 17

She started one year ago with a piece of oak that she found on a gardener’s farm. It was inconspicuous but she learned how to handle it and how to bring it to an artwork. With this piece of wood, she discovered that working with wood is a great compensation for the work-life she normally has, spending the whole day in meetings and working with the computer.

Forest ghost | Wood Carving

NA

31 X 20

The ghost of the forest is a wooden root with a shiny surface that catches the light of the bright moon. It is like a guardian for nature, for the forest, for the whole life.

“I never took formal education or studied arts, yet I am very often proud of my creations, especially with the results.”
