“I found my love for art as a little girl.”
DebraeZsa Hart was born & raised in Lagrange Ga. She is a young adult female artist who works in acrylic paint to convey her expression of the African American womanly experience. She’s a painter inspired by a variety of colors. One of DebraeZsa’s interesting techniques is to remove the eyes in portraits, which is reminiscent of her journey through her hearing loss.

At that moment, feeling less than my best, I gravitated toward the soothing spectrum of blues, evoking feelings of freedom, loyalty, confidence, and sadness mirroring my emotional state. Adding touches of gold, my favored hue, reminded me of intrinsic worth amidst worldly unrest.
At the age of three her family found out that the nerves in her ear didn’t fully develop, which meant she had to wear hearing aids for a lifetime. DebraeZsa inspires others to find beauty and strength in their struggles.

In a deliberate artistic choice, I utilized the color black to symbolize the depths of my darkest moments. This hue, with its inherent depth and complexity, served as a visual representation of the challenges I was facing at that time. Each brushstroke of black paint spoke volumes about the struggles I was navigating, encapsulating the complexities of my emotions and experiences.
DebraeZsa's distinct artistic style, focusing solely on painting lips in her portraits, serves as a reflection of her own identity. Yet, it also represents resilient women who conceal a myriad of emotions. This symbolic choice underscores the idea that while eyes remain silent, lips possess the power to articulate unspoken feelings.
“Through my art, I capture the complexity of women, revealing their inner strength and hidden layers of emotion.”
At its core, this artistic approach encapsulates the essence of the phrase: "Your eyes can't speak but your lips can." It encapsulates this sentiment, highlighting the importance of verbal and nonverbal communication in conveying one's inner thoughts and emotions. This is her quote for her paintings, which is why DebraeZsa Hart always continues to paint the lips closed, you will never see them open.

Self Love | Acrylic | 36x24in
$8,000
36 X 24
In this artwork, I made a deliberate choice to incorporate not only my skin tones but also a diverse array of others. This decision was born out of a profound realization—an understanding that my journey toward self-recovery is not solitary. By visually representing diversity in my work, I aim to acknowledge and honor the collective experiences of individuals navigating their paths of healing and growth.
In 2023, I ventured into abstract art, initially unsure but increasingly invigorated. As I experimented, I realized this style resonated deeply with me. Though initially prompted by academic requirements, this exploration became integral to my artistic evolution. Each piece served as a step in uncovering my unique expression.

Stress but invigorated | Acrylic | 20x20in

DebraeZsa's withdrawal from social engagement post-preteen years epitomizes her inclination towards solitude. Confronting relentless bullying owing to her speech impediments rooted in hearing loss, she frequently grappled with verbal articulation. Despite an innate affinity for dialogue, she restricted interpersonal exchanges to a privileged circle of confidants.
“By symbolically representing silence and the withholding of personal experiences, I create a powerful connection with other women who may relate to my struggles.”
“My art of painting eyeless portraits represents my desire for others not to know I have been through some things: no matter what the predicament is. Additionally, the choice to depict women in symbolic form, with diverse body shapes and shades, speaks to the universality of the female experience.”
This guarded demeanor underscores her strenuous efforts to navigate social spheres amidst profound personal challenges. Yet, within the confines of her selective interactions, there exists a silent narrative of resilience and tenacity, underscoring the enduring significance of human connection amid adversities endured in solitude.

Discouraged | Acrylic | 36x25in
$6,000
36 X 24
During the process of painting this piece, I experienced discouragement as I continued to explore my artistic style. However, my inner voice urged me not to abandon it but to persevere. Although it may not be my personal favorite, I hold hope that someone will find beauty in it.
By embracing the diversity of women's bodies and experiences, DebraeZsa celebrates the strength and resilience inherent in womanhood. On the other hand, DebraeZsa knows other women can relate to this as well which is the reason why she continues to paint her lips closed. The closed lips serve as a visual metaphor for the unspoken challenges and emotions that many individuals face, inviting viewers to reflect on their journeys and experiences.

BLK | Acrylic | 20x20in

In honor of Black History Month, I painted this piece. The red background, along with yellow, green, and black, signifies unity and pride. I'm grateful to Carter G. Woodson for founding Black History Month, and dedicating February to educating about black history. It's essential for everyone, inside and outside the Black community. This month reminds us of the depth of our history, encouraging ongoing learning, celebration, and respect for our cultural heritage year-round.
People know but don’t relate to what someone has been through unless it is said. Not only does she paint because of the way she feels but because she is at peace while expressing her feelings through her artwork. As of 2023, DebraeZsa started painting abstract artwork that people tend to love the most and is one of her favorite styles to paint. Embracing this style has not only allowed her to explore new forms of expression but has also resonated deeply with her audience.
In my paintings, the fugitive women are depicted as bald not to represent any specific individual, but rather to symbolize the universality of their experiences. By omitting hair, I aim to create a sense of anonymity, allowing viewers to project their own interpretations onto the figures. This deliberate choice also serves to emphasize the prominence of the fugitive woman within the composition, making her stand out compared to other pieces I've created.

“My choice of color is always dependent on my mood. It could be a color I want to use or I believe will cooperate very well.”

Looking at some of my recent paintings, they look empty. I sought out the opinion of a friend from school to help me choose the strongest piece for our group exhibition. I didn’t know where to start, so I began brainstorming ways to inject magic into my artwork. Then it dawned on me: what if I incorporated fabric onto canvas, similar to my approach with sculpture? Despite feeling like I was in the midst of a storm, I promised myself not to give up on my artistic journey.
She always starts by painting the background a solid color, and then she gets to the point of painting a variety of unique marks that include splashes, swirls, dots, etc. The background is solid for a reason, she wants the details to speak for itself. The splashes are her main idea. She will paint it in maybe the middle but paint it in the very end.
This project initially felt like a daunting challenge since it required me to explore three-dimensional art, a realm I hadn't ventured into before. With guidance from my professor on ways to refine my artistic style, I embarked on the journey. As the piece took shape, I found myself reflecting on its deeper meaning and the reasons behind my creative choices.

Emotional Odyssey | Mixed Media | 48x33in

DebraeZsa dedicates at least a week or two to each painting, often returning to add more details until she feels satisfied. Even if a piece is months or years old, she trusts her intuition to determine when it's truly complete. She wants the audience to understand that it is just not her figurative abstract artwork, she wants the audience to experience the journey of creation alongside her, she creates a sense of intimacy and connection that transcends the canvas.

I enjoy using leftover fabric, knowing it will inspire future creations. This 'bits piece' unexpectedly elevated my artistic journey. Guided by intuition, each fragment found its place, forming a composition beyond my expectations. It felt like my heart directed every placement, resulting in a piece that truly reflects my vision. Whether envisioning its outcome or following intuition, this artwork embodies my creative process.
“I don’t necessarily plan how I will paint it; I let my mind lead me and go with the flow, It is now where it begins, I paint how I feel.”
