Corey Eid

“I started drawing two years ago during the pandemic, finding portraiture and photorealism to be the driving force behind my works.”
Around two years ago, Corey Eid was at a crossroads professionally. What he thought he wanted didn’t really matter anymore and the entire world had stopped operating as everyone knew it. He was in an uncomfortable position of not knowing what he was going to do.

Metamorphosis is a meditation on seeing the beauty of change take place, especially within ourselves.
One night, before Eid, went to bed, he prayed to God for something that he could do, that could be his. He woke up the next morning and over the next few days, he felt an intense inspiration to start drawing. He hasn’t stopped since then. Although drawing was never an outlet in his childhood, Corey was always interested in the arts.

Sometimes we have to look at ourselves in the mirror to remember our truth.
His first love was writing stories, which he’d put down on construction paper and cardboard and go door to door in hopes of selling the stories to his neighbors. In high school, he developed a deep love for music, trading in his trumpet for an amplifier, and started a band with his best friend, writing lyrics and playing the guitar.
“My main focus as an artist is to bring out, not just the likeness, but the essence of the subject through the drawing.”
In his early twenties, Corey moved to Los Angeles and worked as an actor in film and television, finding character work another avenue for artistic exploration. Even in acting, it’s always been about the eyes. What are the eyes doing in a scene?

Corey finds it fascinating to see eyes do the talking; no words, no dialogues, but just the expression of the eyes that says everything. His favorite actors were the ones who told their stories with just their eyes. When no lines were needed, the emotion and the story were conveyed to the audience through the eyes. That is a major focal point in his work.
“I like to think of the drawings as a close-up. I think it comes from an acting background. When the lens is up close, you see the truth.”
“I love drawing people. As the old saying goes, ‘The eyes are the window to the soul’ and when it comes to me, I truly believe that you can pick up on someone’s energy when you stare into their eyes.
Being a self-taught artist, Corey has spent many hours exploring his chosen medium– graphite, finding new ways of mark making, and navigating the mistakes until getting to the desired results. Watching a drawing take shape is a very special experience for the artist. The way the graphite lays across the page gives Eid the energy to spend 8 hours a day or more, sculpting with the pencil.

A study on the innocence of childhood.
It was Corey’s cousin, when he had just started drawing, who advised him to think of drawing as sculpting. That advice has left a lasting impression on Corey’s approach to his work. Drawing is an obsession for the artist. It’s something that is always on his mind in some way or another, every second of the day.

Byron was my third animal commission and the first dog I had ever drawn. It was an amazing experience watching him take shape on the page.
If Corey’s not working, he’s thinking of his next project, and what he feels he needs to capture, or what needs to come about. The artist finds the whole process therapeutic and very healing. Through his drawings, his goal has always been to let the viewer heal from the work in some way. Whether that comes from just taking a moment to be still or if the particular piece strikes the viewer emotionally.

“I love drawing animals because you can feel the energy in their eyes. They’re pure and it makes them a pleasure to draw.”

Rebirth is symbolic of new beginnings and a glimmer of light in the darkness.
Most of Corey’s early work revolved solely on the human form, until, to his surprise, commissions of animals started to be requested. He was excited and unsure if he would be successful at completing his very first portrait of a horse as he’d never drawn an animal before.
Spy was my first animal commission and the first horse I had drawn. His energy came very strongly through, and I’m so honored to have had the experience.

Animals quickly became one of the favorite subjects of the artist. He feels that humans and animals are alike in so many ways. And each animal gives the viewers their unique personality in every picture. Apart from this, Corey is currently working on drawing natural elements and scenes as well, but his portraits are always in the back of his mind.

This was a commission for my great grandmother turning 100. She is the beautiful woman in the portrait next to the love of her life.
“I draw every day, always trying to further myself through my work.”
