Catherine Brady is a mixed-media artist whose work moves fluidly between the figurative and the abstract, exploring the tension between life and fantasy. Ranging in scale from twelve inches square to canvases as large as three by three feet, her pieces draw on a wide array of materials to give shape to feeling. For Brady, art is above all a language of emotion, a way of translating the joys and heartaches that shape a life into images that others can feel. This piece represents life and the many colours we see. It was initially painted with acrylic fluid. I want this piece to express the joy and beauty in life.
Working with a wide array of materials, inks, charcoal, pastels, oils, watercolors, and acrylics, Brady moves freely among techniques, choosing whatever will best serve the feeling of a given piece. This embrace of mixed media is central to her practice, allowing her to layer, combine, and experiment in ways that a single medium never could. One signature approach is her habit of laying an acrylic undercoat beneath her oils, a technique that noticeably deepens and enhances the vibrancy of her colors. Through this constant material exploration, she keeps her work alive, responsive, and rich in both texture and tone.

Her working method is loose, intuitive, and improvisational. Rather than imposing a rigid plan, Brady paints freely and allows the paint, the canvas, or the paper itself to help guide the direction a piece will take. She lets her mood shape what emerges, permitting the emotion of the moment to influence the work so that the finished piece carries an authentic charge of feeling. This willingness to surrender some control, to collaborate with her materials rather than dominate them, gives her art its spontaneity and life. Each work becomes a record of its own making, shaped as much by instinct and feeling as by deliberate intention.

"Drawing has been my whole life, a way to hold the joys and sorrows I meet along the way and give them back as something another person can feel. I work loosely, letting my materials and my feelings lead me, because I want the charge of a single moment to stay alive in the finished piece. Even in recovery from my stroke I have kept painting, adapting how I work, because creating is how I reach the world, and my greatest hope is that everyone who looks discovers a journey of their own somewhere inside what I have made."

This piece was completed recently and depicts a friend who lives to fish. His story is very similar to the old man in the sea.
For Brady, the central ambition is to evoke strong emotion in those who encounter her work. While she tends toward contemporary figurative subjects, she also holds a deep love for animals and nature, themes that recur throughout her output. What truly defines her style, however, is not subject matter but intent: each piece is crafted to resonate with the shared human experience, to touch something real in the person viewing it. This emotional focus is what makes her work unmistakably her own. Whatever the subject or scale, her aim remains constant, to create art that feels, and that makes the viewer feel in return.

This is a very important piece in my life's journey. I am letting go of all my fears and doubts to my higher power. I am letting go as I realize I am powerless, and I trust my higher power.
Brady wants each viewer to have their own personal journey through her art. She lets color and style guide the individual into their own thoughts and feelings, deliberately leaving room for many interpretations of a single piece. Rather than dictating meaning, she opens a space in which each person can find something of themselves. This generosity toward the viewer reflects her belief that art belongs, in part, to the one who receives it. Her paintings represent her own feelings and are deeply emotional at their source, yet they are made to be met halfway, completed anew by every person who brings their own history to the encounter.

Though largely self-taught, Brady has pursued her development as an artist with dedication and care. She has furthered her studies at Niagara College, at the Pumphouse in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and through life drawing at Studio 201 in St. Catharines, continually refining her craft while preserving the personal, instinctive voice that defines her work. She describes herself as continuously evolving, an artist committed to growth rather than to any fixed style or formula. This blend of self-taught freedom and ongoing study gives her practice both its openness and its discipline, allowing her to develop technically without losing the emotional immediacy that lies at the center of everything she creates.

Recognition has followed her commitment in meaningful ways. Brady recently received an honorable mention in the TERAVARNA International Art Competition, and her work has been featured in Unscene Magazine for three consecutive years. Her paintings have been displayed in many venues, most recently at the Marilyn Walker Museum of Fine Art. Working under the name Muskokawind Art, she continues to build a body of work that reaches an ever-wider audience. These milestones reflect not only the quality of her craft but the emotional resonance of her vision, evidence that the feelings she pours into her work are reaching the people who encounter it.

This piece shows an internal fight I'm having. I am trying to depict the power I have inside of me, to be able to deal with life's battles.

Brady is in recovery from a significant stroke and has thoughtfully adapted her painting process to accommodate her disability, a testament to how deeply creativity is woven into who she is. Rather than diminishing her practice, this adaptation has become part of her story of perseverance, and it lends her work an added dimension of strength and honesty. Her art stands as a quiet act of resilience, proof that the drive to create and to connect can endure and transform even in the face of profound personal change.
