“My contemporary work is meant to be a conversation between subject and viewer. I aim for the environment to vibrate through the flowers.”
Photographer and artist Barbara Lynn Adams uses hyper-collage photography techniques, layering together photographs of flowers with layers and fragments of photographs of her original paintings to create expressive, colorful, meta universes of flowers. Her work has been called, “a genre of its own.”
Your underworld vibrates deeply | Color Photography
$750
This is a limited edition series of 100 prints. The image is meant to explore the vulnerabilities of the underworld, the underneath of flowers. It is a metaphor of showing the beauty of the underneath, revealing the underbelly. Vulnerability allows for love, beauty and healing.
The translucent nature of her images asks the viewer to see underworlds of vulnerability and beauty in ourselves and the flowers. Her work is informed by working as a pediatric oncology nurse for over a decade, witnessing the worlds within worlds of fragility, love, beauty and tragedy that illness and mortality can bring.
With you, the edges soften | Color Photography
$750
This is a limited edition series of 100 prints. The image explores love and childhood joy and innocence. Together with a loving, supportive friend, spouse, partner, parent, child, the harshness (the sharp edges) of life can soften.
For Adam’s it’s important to show the influences of the flower, the endless colors of light, the shapes of walls, water, abstractions of people, places, things that have influenced the life of the flower as the life of a flower is not an isolated event. It’s also central to Adams that the flower be presented at an angle from below (a low angle) or straight on.
“Reverence for a flower, reverence for a human life is a central theme for Adams.”
Sometimes the photography/art world has focused on a pattern or a color, type for flower, leaving out the dimensional world. Adams’s wants us to see "the dimensional brilliance of the flower.” At a low angle, from below, the flower is revered - it is a metaphor for all human life needing to be revered.

Transparent and vulnerable, I see you | Color Photography
$750
This is a limited edition series of 100 prints. The image explores transparency. Perhaps, when we reveal ourselves, our inner hurts, loves, hopes, see through the layers, the "protected selves" then we can really feel all the beauty that makes us who we are.
This image is in honour of Artist Georgia O'Keefe. It is in honour of owning one's own unique glow and voice. In honour of just "doing you," not having to adhere to what has been done before for approval. The beauty and voice come uniquely from within you.

In Honour of Georgia O'Keefe, Thank You for your inner glow | Color Photography
$375
Technically, Adams starts with photographs of flowers and abstract photos. She then photographs her original artwork, both oils and watercolors which either stand alone as paintings or are created solely for her photography collages. She then takes her photographs and layers and collages them together using photoshop, creating textures, moment, vibrant colors, hard and soft dimensions of the flowers.
“She dedicates her work to her young oncology patients (friends) especially those who wished someday to be artists, but died before they had a chance to create all their art.”
“Texture and color are of central importance in my floral worlds.”
Color stands out in many her images. The idea being that if all people see color differently, a “red” rose really is not a “red” rose to everyone. Using both colors from traditional art mediums and colors generated by technology, she is able to, perhaps, be more inclusive of how each person might see color.

All the pieces in you are beautiful | Color Photography
$375
This image aims to acknowledge that every piece of you (of us), broken, healing, healed, whole, dying, shattered, harmonious, tormented, damaged and undamaged is beautiful. Beauty can be seen in every piece of you.
Her work is also an attempt to question traditional color labels for flowers. Scientifically and subjectively a red rose is never really red either by the physics of light and subjective nature human color vision. Perhaps, there needs to be caution in simplifying, placing, and constricting the complexity human beings and complexity of flowers into to any category or label as such, red, purple, woman, male, tall, or small, rural, urban.

The Wisdom is Within | Color Photography
$375
The centre of the flower gazes off to the side; the flower looks like a wise turtle, asking us to reflect and explore: What is wisdom? Where does wisdom comes from?
Adams loves all mediums of art so by placing photographs of her artwork in many mediums together in a photographic image she can create different expressive aspects of a flower to be seen in one image, from water, to vibrancy, to texture, to movement and unique brush strokes.
The image explores the idea that we are not the same person and that is ok. We are different and difference can create beauty. Side by side, accepting, loving and learning from all our differences, we blossom.

Side by side, we blossom | Color Photography
$375
“Adams has noted that sometimes flowers can be traditionally dominated by a higher and/or equal view.”

Circling in you are endless possibilities | Color Photography
$375
Each circle creates a new possibility. Possibility isn't just about goals and outcomes. Perhaps there is a possibility in each moment for kindness, love, compassion, tears, healing, perhaps, even in most challenging circumstance.
She lived in Poland in the mid-nineties after the collapse of communism and got to study post-war literature. She has also lived in Africa. She has been constantly creating art and poetry along the way. For Adams, being a nurse has been an art, too, perhaps, a lived art.
Perhaps, we can grow gently, even if our backgrounds may be rough in experience and texture, we can still find gentleness.
