Andrzej Malag

POLAND

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“If you ask me, there is no contradiction between art and physics.”

In his artistic activities, Andrzej Maląg deals with two directions. The first is conventional oil paintings in the style of magical realism — the sources of inspiration here are usually fantasy, literature, ancient cultures, time elapsing, etc. The second is ‘Interference photo-graphics’ created in the electronic environment. The inspiration is usually quantum physics and cosmology.

The central column of biforium is formed by two stone blocks set one on top of the other, supporting the lintel blocks. The constructions in the first and second plan illustrate the period of megalithic technologies, referring to Malta, Gozo, Stonehenge. Partial flooding is the result of tectonic movements. After going deep into the picture - and in time - in the third plan we are already in the Hellenistic period. 'Foreign' objects signal continuation and communication through time.

The artist was born and spent his young years in Szczecin, Western Pomerania, which was at that time a dynamically developing seaport and shipbuilding center. His interest in painting — typically in his youth – was highly influenced by the atmosphere of the city port, and shipyard, the proximity and exoticism of the nearby lagoon and the sea.

In the Youth Culture Center in Szczecin, in an artistic studio, thanks to gifted teachers he developed these interests - his painted works from that time were exclusively focused on marine themes. His interest in art became a bit of a sideline when he began studying at the technical school, as it was a Mechanical and Power Engineering School with a specialization in RTV electronics.

“Marine themes were and still are very close to my heart.”

One of the features of the microclimate of Western Pomerania is frequent rainy weather in summer. However, walking after the rain on summer nights and looking through glasses at the streetlights shining through the leaves of the trees, he observed characteristic stripe structures initiated by the raindrops on the glasses.

grey harbour | Oil

$4,000

38 X 40

Tolkien inspiration. The image refers to one of the last scenes of the "Lord of the Rings", in which the Elves leave Middle-Earth. The stage depicts a gorge leading to Gray Harbor, where the last ship flowing out of the Middle-Earth awaits for the last passengers at the end of the platform.
Note, the composition is nonhomogeneous. There are two points of perspective - for a wide landscape and the other along the portico - it would be impossible to look simultaneously in both directions.

The myth of Scylla and Charybdis has two parallel versions: in the one I try to illustrate here these sea beasts are a movable rock and a large sea vortex (both of these entities have their female personifications (Greeks…..)) lurking on flowing ships.

These very different interference figures are created despite the near-zero coherence length of the streetlamp light because the optical path difference is also near zero. Then, wandering through the rain, he didn’t understand it that way. However, the visual effect stayed in his memory for a long time with the thought that it would have to be developed in some artistic way someday. The solution came years later thanks to his technical interests.

“Over time I attempted to illustrate physical phenomena, e.g. wave motion, the influence of literature sci-fi and fantasy, fascination with ancient cultures, etc.”

“One day I returned to ‘rainy’ observations from years ago. This happened accidentally - at the Institute in Warsaw, where, among others, the optical methods were used to characterize laser diodes.”

Malag’s studies at the Faculty of Electronics, Gdansk University of Technology completed in 1974, followed by a PhD. (1983) and D.Sc. (2004) at the Institute of Electron Technology (ITE), Warsaw in the field of semiconductor optoelectronics. During his studies in Gdansk and in his period of professional activities, his painting activity was limited. However, with time, he developed newer interests that led to further explorations.

The Dark Matter (whatever it is) is about 25% of the mass and energy of the Universe. In the era of inflation original quantum fluctuations ‘grew’, causing local large-scale Dark Matter densification centers. They increased under the influence of their own gravity, initiating the gravitational concentration of 'Ordinary Matter' (less than 5% of the Universe). Then, several hundred million years after the Big Bang the densification of Ordinary Matter led to the flash of first stars and galaxies.

In order to obtain interference effects, instead of raindrops on glasses, he prepared simple sub-millimeter-sized masks or apertures. The laser beam passing through them is partially deflected at the edges (diffraction), and the deflected component beams overlapping each other create interference images on the screen – like a CCD matrix – depending on several parameters, especially on the designed shape and size of the mask.

The registered interference images became the basis for further graphic processing. This is how he introduced the interference photo-graphics. Now, after finalizing his ‘adventure’ with optoelectronics and semiconductor technology, he has a little more time for painting and digital compositions. Since the days of the Impressionists, there has been an opinion that what is important in painting is not the ‘what,’ but rather the ‘how.’

The historical impression about the ancient architecture. Architecture works are usually much more long-lasting than their creators. Therefore we can meet architecture of various periods coexisting in some places and moments. In the image, neolithic builders behind the stone dodecahedron lying in the square are poorly visible because they came from a different time.

This principle works, but not exclusively – an increased content of the ‘what’ element encourages more than superficial insight - to activate some out-of-painting associations. Here is also a field for trials for mental communication of art and scientific issues. However, the importance of the ‘how’ element remains beyond discussion.

It is a graphic impression (certainly very distant from real complexity) about partially competitive Superstrings and Loop Quantum Gravity Theories - aiming at unification of four basic interactions (after reading the Jim Baggott’s "Quantum Space ..." (2018)).

During his higher studies, Andrzej pursued his professional interests in the field of design, construction, and technology of semiconductor lasers at the Institute of Electron Technology (ITE) and then as a researcher, then as the head of the Department of Optoelectronics at the Institute of Electronic Materials Technology (ITME), Warsaw. He owns authorship and co-authorship of more than 100 publications and patents in national and international publications as well.

“Quantum physics and cosmology penetrate the boundaries of philosophical issues and inspire my artistic research.”
