Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“I didn’t choose the path, I created it. I make art, because an artist is who I am.”

Amanda Perkins was born on a Friday, April 4th, 1997. She is a small-town artist living in one of the smallest states in the USA, Connecticut. She followed her father’s footsteps to peruse creativity in drawing. She has never liked the idea of going to college for art, she taught herself all that she has learned.

Parrotdice | Colorpencil

One day, I was just fooling around with my pencil and drawing random shapes. Then I found out that I could see something in the shapes. But others see something completely different - it’s supposed to be a parrot sitting on a nest with a clutch of eggs. But what do you see?

Art doesn’t always have to have an idea in mind, sometimes it evolves over time.

This is my signature piece. My favorite if you will. I hope you enjoy it.

It started with her obsession of orca whales, to drawing cliff sides over an ocean. Art class was just her favorite while she was growing up. And it didn’t matter whether she was drawing, sculpting, firing clay, making collages, or making a hand-turkey at thanksgiving time. She just had so much fun.

The Greedy Octopus | Colorpencil

I decided to do something fun with this one and pick random words from a jar that inspired this idea and ended up drawing one of my most popular pieces out of it! I highly recommend this type of strategy if you’re stumped and not sure what to make.

Her first inspiration was her father, who was also an artist. She always remembered seeing his artwork and thought it was so amazing that he could draw that. She wanted to do that too! When she was 18, he taught her to love the struggle, and he continues to be her inspiration throughout the years. Her art looked identical to his, growing up, and he always told her how one day, something incredible like this would happen to her. “If you told me back in high school I would get this opportunity, I wouldn’t believe you for a second.”

“There is always a perfect piece for every person in the world.”

Her second inspiration is an art teacher from kindergarten through 4th grade, who taught her the difference between warm and cool colors, and she knew that she was secretly her favorite student. Through school, Mrs. Laura Powers rains supreme as her favorite art teacher of all time. She knows what it is to be an artist.

The Burden of Inspiration | Colorpencil

$80.00

The Burden of Inspiration is a piece I made to describe the struggle between being an artist and dealing with the real world.

Sometimes you want to draw, but have no time. Sometimes you have art block, and sometimes you have so many ideas going on in your head that they burst open and collectively overwhelm you. It’s…. Quite a burden to be inspired.

I often daydream about what life is like on mars. David Bowie was a huge Inspiration for me growing up. He was just so WEIRD, and his songs told stories of things and places about people that didn’t exist, but it felt like I was there. “Space Oddity”, “Ziggy Stardust” and even his final album Black Star. His story telling skills were like no other, and I often wondered what the Starman, waiting in the sky, who’d think he’d blow our minds, has seen on other worlds.

Now here is the question: What is art? What is art supposed to be? Well, art is an impossibly undefinable term, which is subjective, and has a different perspective for anyone who lays their eyes on it. Art means something different to everybody.
What is art to YOU?

“Art is an incredible form of expression of personality. You can put 50 people in a room together and ask them to draw a tree, and each of them will have made their own version of a tree, even in the finest of details.”

“From the moment I could hold a pencil as a young child, probably 4 or 5 years old, I would spend the hours of my adolescence just drawing; creating art.”

Sometimes, when she is drawing, she can get so lost, that hours go by, and she found herself stayed up until 2 am creating a piece. But when she finally finishes that last line, that last bit of color or shadow, and step back to look at the entire thing, her heart, her chest, her SOUL is enveloped in a fire that’s fuelled by nothing else.

Juicy | Colorpencil

$80.00

10 X 8

Juicy. I asked someone special to tell me what he thought of this piece, and what words come to mind. It has aspects of tropical fruits, berries, nice warm rays of sunshine, and painted stain glass. I wanted to make a true abstract and this is the first one. I often wonder what colors would taste like if they had flavor.

She has a strange connection to her pieces, to her creations. Every single one of them has a piece of her heart and soul written in it. She can tell how she was feeling when she was creating something from 4 years ago - and relive the feeling every time she traces her steps and how she has drawn that piece.

Melting Midnight | Colorpencil

$80.00

10 X 8

Is this the place of dreams, where you go to sleep? The place you go when you count the sheep jumping over the fence? This piece makes me feel very calm and cozy. I hope it does for you, too.

Sometimes people see different things in Art or feel different emotions. There is something that connects with them in a way they can’t grasp - art is the aspect of bringing out the emotions buried deep inside your soul. And to be able to create art is a miracle.

I love dragons. In every corner of my room there is at least one dragon related thing. I was never a fan of the idea that the knight in shining armor had to slay the dragon - what did that dragon ever do? It probably doesn’t even wanna be there. Here is a tribute to the Dragon getting its revenge.

Dragon Slayer | Colorpencil

$80.00

10 X 8

“Someone could feel connected to one specific piece that another person doesn’t feel anything for - and that’s what is so amazing about art!”

Celestial Bodies | Colorpencil

$80.00

10 X 8

As a member of the LGBTQ+, which is something I’ve always identified as a very personal part of myself, I wanted to make this piece in dedication to… Love. Love being love is love no matter what love loves. I know that sounded confusing. I’m proud to be who I am, and love the ones I love. And I will always believe that love is love no matter what.

So, art to her, is a creation that brings out some form of emotion when you look upon it. Being an artist means you’re willing to show the good with the bad, show your darkness in your art, or your love, or happiness. Your ability to put a piece of you into your art is a key part in being an artist.

Something Ive wanted to do for a long time; make something look evil and demonic. I love HP Lovecraft and the idea of old gods having been demons. The whole concept of “purely evil” can’t exist without some kind of light. Just as a white rose can’t exist without its shadows. There is a concept that evil needs the light, just to exaggerate and acknowledge what it is. But what is evil, than something we just don’t understand.

Demonic Unicorn | Colorpencil

It’s fascinating and inspiring to know that so much individuality exists in this world in the form of art. Ultimately the idea of this is what inspires her to continue to create - because no one can draw like her, and no one can draw like someone else. Nobody can create exactly like anybody else in the world.

Tiny Garden | Colorpencil

$80.00

10 X 8

Did you know in any inch of the world, thousands of living brings can exist? In the ocean, on the ground… points if you know what Lichen is! Lichen is a fungus/moss that is practically as old as prehistoric times. They are very small to the naked eye. Trumpet lichen look like, you guessed it; trumpets. Red soldier lichen have bright red caps on the tops of them. And their texture is like stone. I often enjoy photographing them as much as I enjoy drawing tiny worlds with insects that don’t exist.

“Creating art is not a job, nor a profession, but a passion of the soul.”
