Yating Liu

CHINA

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“My journey in design is a remarkable narrative of passion, determination, and talent.”

Yating Liu’s path in life took a pivotal turn when she decided to shift from studying economics to exploring multimedia and technology at Hong Kong Polytechnic University's School of Design, the top-ranked design school in Asia. This transition marked the start of a career that has been profoundly influenced by her childhood dream and love for design

Yating Liu finds inspiration in vibrant nature scenes for font creations. The bold and contrasting style of Didot fonts also influences her work, especially in creating "The Algae" typeface. With this font, she aims to capture the intricacies of marine life, conveying delicate aspects and evoking a sense of rhythm and vitality, reminiscent of seaweed drifting in the deep sea.

In her quest to expand her design knowledge, Yating Liu attended the School of Visual Arts in 2017, a globally renowned institution. Here, she pursued professional studies in graphic design and gained valuable experience under the mentorship of Professor Scott Buschkuhl. Her work stood out, and she actively participated in various design projects across the Asia-Pacific and North American regions. Her adaptability is reflected in her work for clients such as the Beijing Yanjing Group, Hong Kong’s Tong Chong Street Market, and Haute Global Media Art Exhibition.

In 2016, as a student representative, she led a delegation to the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Biennale, a vital platform for cultural exchange between Hong Kong and mainland China, which further solidified her role as a bridge between different design cultures

“My cross-disciplinary education gave her a unique set of skills and perspectives that have shaped her innovative approach to graphic design.”

After graduating in 2019, Yating Liu joined Viacom, an international media conglomerate, where she contributed to the visual design for Viacom's annual event in New York. Her talents were soon recognized by the New York design firm Purpose, where she worked as a visual designer.

Marine extinction | Graphic Design

The Japanese government decided to start releasing treated nuclear wastewater into the Pacific Ocean in August 2023. This action has sparked global debate and is highly likely to cause widespread extinction effects on marine life. This is the inspiration behind a series of posters I created. I extracted the elegant shapes and forms of seaweed as visual elements to design a font set, and abstracted nuclear wastewater as the background of the posters.

Mathematics illuminates patterns in our world. In this experimental project for the National Museum of Mathematics in downtown New York, I developed a visual system, which isn't merely a branding redesign but also a visual narrative, curated to spark curiosity and explore how design can engage audiences and foster a deeper appreciation for the mathematical universe. The visual identity centers around a customized typeface, directly inspired by the shapes of mathematical symbols.

My journey exemplifies my dedication to design and the ability to transcend cultural and professional boundaries, establishing me as a rising star in the global design landscape.”

“My first major project involved branding and web design for the Purpose Foundation, a project I won with my distinctive design. I also redesigned the logo for KaBOOM!, a nonprofit that builds playgrounds across the U.S. and Canada, resolving a longstanding challenge and earning the client's approval.”

In May of the previous year, Ms. Liu returned to China, driven by personal aspirations to pursue love and family. She joined 2x4 (Beijing), an international design firm known for its expertise in culture, art, fashion, and architecture. Since joining, she has been integral to projects for major clients like ByteDance, CBRE, Shanghai Design College, and Fubon Art Museum.

She has also received accolades like The 58th GDUSA American Graphic Design Awards, the 2022 Indigo Design Award (Gold Winner), and the 2022 Hermes Creative Awards (Gold Winner).
