Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“At that moment, when I was a 4-year-old boy, gazing in disbelief and incomprehension down that street, with all its destruction, my inner view of life was changed forever.”

Born in the northeastern section of New Jersey, Tom Kelly spent his early childhood in the small town of Waldwick. By the mid-1950s, his family moved to England where they lived for a little less than a year.

Although very young at the time, his most vivid memory during their stay in England, was that of a street his father and he had walked past on the way to watch a new movie, just out then, ‘Strategic Air Command’.

The day was a traditionally grey and drizzly English one, and the street they passed had not yet been rebuilt after a World War II bombing. Only the broken, empty shells of bombed-out brick and stone buildings, the full length of the street, remained. The sight made a powerful impression. The image stays with him, nearly 70 years later.

“When asked when I became a photographer, I look back to that day in 1955 and realize that was the day I became a photographer.”

For most of Tom’s photographic career, he spent his time with award-winning landscapes. For as long as he could remember, Tom’s love for landscape photography dominated his work. Then in 2018, he had a kind of awakening. Tom decided he had had enough of landscape photography.

Tom wanted to do something completely different. So after an untold number of iterations, he came up with a technique for photographing fire in a completely different way. The results are totally abstract images of unrecognizable origin.

“As an artist, I look for the most natural way to interpret my feeling of that day.”

“I felt I had taken all the landscapes I wanted and combined them with all the other landscape photographer’s work and they all had become variations on similar themes.”

Today Tom’s art is still guided by the disturbing image of that bombed-out street. With these images, he tries to tell a story of a little boy’s emotions evoked by the scenes of bombed-out brick buildings. It starts with the image, but that is only the beginning.

Children don’t always have the language skills to interpret and describe their feelings. Tom remembers his feelings of that day and this technique of photography has given those feelings a voice, albeit 70 years later. Tom’s memory is undoubtedly tempered by the years of life since that day, and that is was makes these images appropriate for all viewers.

These images stem from a little boy’s memory and imagination. Add to that the frustrations of feeling creatively constrained by a very finite creative niche, and the result is something new and unexplored.

All people have feelings that are difficult to visualize. These images are an attempt to visualize raw feelings. Words cannot be used to adequately describe raw feelings. A person can describe the cause of the cause of the feelings but not the feeling itself.

These are literally the works of a camera unleashed from all the rules of modern photography. It has taken Tom a couple of years to develop the photographic technique used to approximate a deliberate shape and still the percentage of acceptable shots remains relatively low. The proud father of two successful children, a daughter, a son, and two granddaughters, Tom currently resides in San Diego, California.
