“My carved wood pieces are built in a way to make them interactive for my audience.”
Seth Peter is a woodworker, sculptor, and furniture maker based in Minneapolis, MN. His furniture pieces are meant to be sat on and the experience varies from smooth curved wooden shapes to spikey triangles supported by a foam layer for a surprisingly soft feel.
Furn the Furniture Cow | Wood Carving
$75,000
34 X 54
Furn is made with Black Walnut, White Ash, and Purple Heart wood with a natural oil finish. Each diamond in the tufted hide pattern is individually cut, shaped, and then joined together. The piece is hollow construction, the legs, tail, and head are textured while the hide is smooth.
Seth’s tufted wood furniture pieces are designed to simulate soft leather; while his wood ottoman designs incorporate an element of surprise and delight from the hidden foam layer just under the surface. The pieces are finished with clear oils and polyurethane to showcase the wood’s natural colors and grain patterns.
Tufted Wood Chair | Wood Carving
$7,500
33 X 22
This tufted wood chair is made with walnut and white ash. Each diamond section is individually cut, hand-shaped, sanded, and then assembled. The edge pieces are angled slightly to provide contour and depth. The buttons are carved from a dowel and penetrate the back side. The legs are shaped to resemble cow hooves, paying homage to this plant-based leather piece. While your eyes may see cushioned leather, the piece is made entirely from wood.
The artist creates a spotted cow pattern in his pieces by combining white ash and black walnut into a single diamond section prior to carving. After creating the tufted cow print bench, Seth was inspired to tell the story of what cow species is used to make such furniture – and this artwork ‘Furn the Furniture Cow’ was born.
“Furn’s construction was a complex project that took me 7 months to complete.”
The Furn is completely hollow from the inside with no frame supporting it. It was built one diamond at a time, the angles for each diamond are unique and every piece is joined using biscuit joinery and glue – no nails or screws are contained within the hidden section. The process of joining each diamond on a round body utilized dowels placed in the buttonholes to provide an anchor point for clamps.

Tufted Wood Bench - Hereford Cow Print | Wood Carving
$4,500
16 X 54
The tufted wood bench is made with walnut and white ash; arranged in a Hereford print before shaping and assembly. It's finished with polyurethane and placed on an upcycled powder steel-coated bench frame.
This tufted wood bench features a walnut top and cherry base.

Fruit and Nut Bench | Wood Carving
$4,000
18 X 36
Seth’s wood-cushioned pieces are inspired by pin impression toys and tessellating geometric patterns. The wooden pegs in these pieces are 4 inches tall and float on an open-cell foam pad. Each peg can be depressed into the pad without moving the neighboring pegs. The pegs can be taken out and rearranged as they are all identical.
“Sculpting wood to make it look like a tufted leather bench or chair is a technique I created myself. It allows me to create truly vegan leather furniture.”
“Even though Furn is hollow, I can assure you that it is sturdy enough for an adult to sit on it. The head and legs of Furn are textured and feel like coarse hair, while the hide is smooth like tanned leather.”
The process of creating a tufted leather bench starts with cutting individual diamond sections, hand carving and sanding each diamond’s cushion profile, and then joining them together with biscuit joinery. After the diamond pieces are fully assembled, Seth drills holes through the cross sections and fills them with a dowel-like wooden button. You can see the buttons penetrate through the back side of his ‘Tufted Wood Chair’ piece.

Tufted Wood Bench - Ash | Wood Carving
$4,000
16 X 54
This tufted wood bench is made with white ash and finished with polyurethane on top of an upcycled powder steel-coated bench frame.
Another artwork, ‘Bolt Head’ was conceived when Seth was asked to create a table for a friend’s company, ‘Process Bolt’. This ottoman is meant to look like the head of a metal bolt. To make a natural finished wood tabletop look like the top of a metal bolt, he created hundreds of triangular wood pegs with triangular cut tops that enable a diffused reflection light pattern.

Stump 2.0 | Wood Carving
$5,000
18 X 18
Stump 2.0 is a reimagined version of the all-purpose tree stump. The interlocking hexagon white ash pegs rest on memory foam that provides a soft seat or footrest while still being sturdy enough to support a beverage or laptop. The walnut base and legs are textured to resemble the touch of bark.
Triangles were chosen as the tessellating pattern for the pegs to form the hexagon bolt shape of the ottoman. People are generally nervous about sitting atop a bed of spikey wooden triangles, but when they do their expression of surprise is priceless. Underneath the spikey triangle pegs, a foam pad creates an amazingly comfortable seat.
Bolt Head is a wood-cushioned hexagon-shaped ottoman. The 384 white ash wooden pegs are shaped as equilateral triangles with a cropped, angular top that forms mesmerizing wood grain patterns. These pegs float in the walnut base on top of an open-cell foam cushion. The cushioned table is sturdy enough to support a laptop and other objects while providing a surprisingly comfortable seat or footrest.

Bolt Head | Wood Carving
$10,000
18 X 36
“The base of Stump 2.0 is inspired by a lesson from my grandfather, a Wisconsin dairy farmer.”

Manhole Coffee Table | Wood Carving
$10,000
18 X 40
End grain White Ash shaped and assembled to look like cobblestone surrounding an upcycled Menzel and Jefferies Minneapolis Foundry drain cover, resting on aluminum casters
Seth received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Kenyon College, and his work often demonstrates his love of Geometry and mathematical problem-solving. Primarily working with North American White Ash and Black Walnut, Seth likes to play with their contrasting colors and wood grains to highlight different elements in his pieces.

Hexagon Coffee Table | Wood Carving
$2,500
18 X 24
The milking stools in Seth’s Grandfather’s barn were always made with 3 legs, making a stable seat despite an uneven barn floor. While there are technically only 2 legs on Stump 2.0, the sturdiness of a three-legged stool is achieved with clever triangular extensions at the top and base of the legs. The walnut sections are textured to feel like tree bark and add to the story of this stool resembling a cross-section slice from a tree.

“Most of my pieces often incorporate multiple textures for an intriguing touch and feel.”
