Mikhail Baranovskiy

ISRAEL

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

“Style gradation is very conditional, each truly artistic statement carries a unique, individual features.”

When Mikhail Baranovskiy was about nine or ten years old, one day before going to bed, he suddenly realized that he would die one day, and was horrified by a revelation that fell on him from nowhere. He lay in bed and tried to realize this reality.

Dangerous Liaisons

The light of the streetlamps filtered through the loose curtains to the book spines on the shelves. And then, suddenly, he was visited by a completely unchildish thought that only writers are capable, if not to remain in eternity, then at least outlive themselves for some time, and after their physical death continue to communicate with the living.

There is no word for "like" in Hebrew. There is an expression "to find joy in my eyes", even if in these eyes the sadness of the entire Jewish people...

Years later, he really began to write. At first it was journalism, then he worked as a screenwriter, playwright, published seven books for adults and children. Once, at a meeting with readers, Baranovskiy was asked: “Why do some people write books and why do others read them?” Michael thinks: the first - from the fear of death, and the second - from the fear of life. In his opinion, the same applies to any art and to painting.

"Within me, the writer is in constant competition with the painter."

In 2014, at the age of fifty-one, Baranovskiy repatriated to Israel. He did not know Hebrew and had a very ephemeral perspective. One thing was clear: books, scripts - everything that he had done before - should be left in the past. He thought about how to find himself in a new country.

I don’t know who decided that it is necessary to look for some kind of meaning in everything.
It seems to me that there is no special meaning in life. And there is no special meaning in death. And there's no point in looking for meaning.
In my opinion, we fool ourselves with this, so that it would not be so insulting to live and die.

The main thing in life is to cut off everything superfluous.

Mikhail arrived in Israel alone (without saying anything about the dog). To somehow escape from loneliness and decorate the interior in a rented apartment, Mikhail began to draw. When all the walls were hung with paintings, he realized that he would not be able to stop. And then it turned out (very opportunely) that there are many walls all over the world ready to receive his work.

"In painting, as well as in literature, the plot, conflict, dramaturgy, a successful metaphor are important for me."

"I still make up stories, just in other creative ways. The writer in me hasn't gone away - he just changed the pen to the brush."

Ten years ago, Baranovskiy started with graphics. Black ink and paper. He had a hard time transitioning to paint. He added one color to the usual black and white combination. Mikhail says that he had a certain fear of color diversity.

For almost a day I did not look at myself in the mirror, and by the end of the day I looked at the reflection and realized that I missed myself.

He never studied painting, but studied journalism, literature, and screenwriting. Mikhail understands well what a plot is, how it is built, what are the laws of dramaturgy. He still makes up stories, just in other creative ways. The writer has not gone anywhere in it - he just changed the pen to the brush.

My dog is more like me than my own child.

Both in painting, as well as in literature, the plot, conflict, dramaturgy, a successful metaphor is important for him. Baranovskiy does not paint landscapes or still life. He is interested in a person in the lyrical, comic, and tragic moments of his life.

She was like an element: unbridled, unpredictable, passionate...

I envy people who can play any musical instrument. I never learned. But sometimes, at some special moments, I hear absolutely amazing music in a virtuoso performance inside me.

I think that in the coming decades, many professions will die out. They will be replaced by new technologies. The five-day work week will be shortened. People will have more money, and they will spend it on art. Because artificial intelligence cannot replace the artist.

“In the end, we are all different, all original.”
