CANADA

“With her much loved view of pastures, lake and mountains outside the studio window, inspiration is always just on the other side of the glass.”
Lorna Beecroft lives with her husband, horses, and cats on a small hobby farm near the Pacific Ocean. Living in a rural area, she is surrounded by an endless parade of animals, everything from the resident ravens and bald eagles to raccoons, rabbits, and the diminutive black-tailed island deer. It is a love of both wild and domestic animals that fuels much of her choice of subjects and her art.
The Raven | Graphite

I have a life-long love of crows and ravens. They are cheeky, rambunctious, thoughtful, caring, loving, playful,
sombre and above all else, tremendously intelligent. I am drawn to the intellect reflected in the tilt of their heads and the depth of their eyes. They exude an otherworldliness that I always hope to capture when drawing them. I chose graphite on paper for this series and for this drawing as I wanted the softness and organic nature of graphite on paper and the depth of value possible
Lorna has had a life-long joy of creating and completely immersed herself into drawing and painting in 2015. She has followed her own self-directed path of education, attending workshops, taking in-person courses, and using online resources. Endless hours are spent drawing and painting as little in art is about talent and so much is about hard work and perseverance.
Beautiful Bella | Colorpencil
$1,250
14 X 13
"Beautiful Bella" is a portrayal of a beautiful alert mare, ready to go to work and do her treasured job for her rider. She is calm and content, happy with her life, being admired and loved by her owner. Her soft shades of black and near-black reflect her health and vitality, the softness of her eye conveys the kindness and beauty of her spirit.
She believes in a hands-on approach to develop a reasonable understanding of what each can do, the techniques required, and how to use them to best advantage. It is an ongoing, ever evolving process as each step taken and skill added opens up more possibilities.
“Pencils and graphite are a preferred media for her as she enjoys the great range of expression possible.”
For Lorna, the joy of creating is seeing the subject materialize as if of its own will out of the paper or on the canvas. In her words, she often feels as though she is an intermediary, as creative energy flows through her, an unstoppable and undeniable force. She feels successful if she is able to capture a feeling or spirit that others share as they view a piece.

Nap Time | Colorpencil
$650
16 X 24
Done in colored pencil, the child-like nature of this pet, draped in his blanket and cuddled in with his favorite stuffy is fully expressed. His eyes are liquid and his patience and happiness come through fully.
The beauty of what black truly is becomes the center of this study of values, hues, and shades in this seemingly simple subject. When the shape, size, and texture of the feathers are added it becomes apparent just how complex a form a Crow is. The intelligence of Corvidae, their ability to solve problems, use of tools, and capacity to learn are worthy of awe and are captured in the tilt of her head and look in her eye. The chosen substrate and medium lend themselves well to the intricacies of su

Lorna is always aware of the animals and people around her, she will notice an interesting behaviour, tilt of head, subtle expression, or graceful line and is compelled to capture the moment and feeling. It is as though something whispers into her ear, telling her to pay attention and demands she get to work in her studio.
“Small sketches are done to confirm choices including the best position of the props on the substrate, what the focal point will be and the final composition.”
“Each medium or substrate has specific strengths as well as weaknesses, and to learn them, an artist must be willing to invest time to research and practice.”
Each time an inspiration comes, she works through the process of deciding which medium to use to bring it to life. Some subjects simply must be drawn in graphite, others are better suited to the organic softness of oils and so on. Time is spent working through the possible mediums and which should work best to achieve the desired outcome.

Solitude | Colorpencil
$1,150
15 X 24
Part of the "Murder She Drew" series, along with "Alone She Ponders" Solitude is a continuation in the study of crows in the early spring forest. There is no sign of life yet, and we can imagine she wonders when and if life will return.
Colours can be explored, background worked out and size decided. Sketches, sometimes as small as 3” by 3” will show the flaws in design as well as offer an opportunity to solve problems beforehand. This can save mistakes from being made on expensive paper or canvas with more costly oils or pencils and saves precious time going down a fruitless path.
