Ling Li Wang

TAIWAN

Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

More than 20 years of drawing reflects my life.

Ever since Ling Li Wang started drawing, she always failed to answer, whenever someone asked her what is she drawing. It’s an easy yet not such an easy question for her. Unfortunately, she can’t tell you what is happening in her drawing but she can definitely share the experience of her feelings in response.

I feel like I'm able to understand the life of Miyazaki Hayao's creativity (famous animator and co-founder of Studio Ghibli).

Whenever Wang picks up her pen, noises from the outer world are muted automatically. nothing can reach her and she has no memory of people, issues, or beings at that time. And after she puts down her pen, she appears like a wandering ghost to her husband and her friends; she is there but she is actually not there.

Staying at home and having nothing else to do during the pandemic 2020.

Living in a traditional society, all the annoying little messy bits of life that are stuck inside are released when Ling Li Wang is drawing, while only calm and peace can stay in her heart then. When noises are no longer in her head, the ink will naturally leak out from pen to paper. After finishing the whole piece, she often feels surprised at how the final result turns out to be and what she has drawn.

Bringing art into life is my faith, I don’t want to let my works become something that can only be understood and enjoyed by a few people.

The artist loves how edgeless the universe is. She loves how creatures look different in the deep sea. In her drawings, she sees the origin of life. Ling Li Wang has sung Mongolian melodies and seen creatures in her pieces floating around her, only to realize later that she has a beautiful space around for herself.

Ling Li Wang believes that her spectators don’t need to prepare any thoughts before they try to see her works. She enjoys different opinions and angles from different cultures and backgrounds! All of it makes her introspect and gain a new perspective towards her own art.

10 years ago, when I picked up a pencil and started to draw, I suddenly felt that the pencil became a part of my body; it smoothly responded to my heart and started running on papers. Since that day I have been addicted to that kind of feeling, I didn't have to think about which color to use.

"I first brought my drawings to the public in autumn, 2018, almost thousands of pieces.
I also started to participate in various artistic events."

The artist has even been thinking about making some of the elements in her drawings into Lego for adults. Ideas kept popping out in her head, even during the difficult Covid-19 times. Apart from exploring each medium separately, she is also trying to combine different mediums like electric embroidery, silk printing, VR, 3D printing, sculpture, and reel, to test interesting ways to present her works.

Dealing with issues in reality and bringing her heart back to calmness has become her biggest challenge recently. She wonders if all artists will face this situation when starting to cooperate with people. While it is crucial for her to keep trying new mediums to make her art more accessible for everyone, she has also realized that at the same time, it gives her the chance to practice how to balance her heart when it is tangled between the inner and outer world.

When I was drained of life.

A lot of people are often curious about why most of Ling's drawings are in black and white. In the beginning, like many other artists, she also used colorful ways, such as crayons, color pencils, acrylic, and oil paints to create her artworks. However, she gradually decided to keep them just black and white.

I keep exploring new mediums and try to gain expertise in different areas, such as drawing with VR technology and producing my works with different printing techniques.

Piece from boringness

Ling Li Wang eventually discovered that needles and ball pens were able to make the black and white figure in her artwork appear sharper and clearer. Now acrylics have also become one of her mediums. She still enjoys this way of drawing, but maybe one day she will change her black and white style once she gets bored with it.
