"I want somebody to walk up to one of my flowers and enjoy it simply for what it appears to be, an ordinary bloom on an ordinary afternoon, and then stand there as the room changes and the whole thing erupts into a language they had no idea was being spoken the entire time they were standing in front of it. That small shock of surprise does something no statistic about vanishing insects has ever done for me. It makes a person curious, and curiosity is the only door I know of that opens onto genuine care for the creatures we are quietly losing. Nobody protects what they have not first been amazed by, and if my flowers can hand somebody that single moment of amazement, then everything else I hope for, the questions, the reading, the small changes people make in their own gardens, tends to follow along behind it without my having to argue for any of it at all."

This hidden dialogue between plant and pollinator became the subject Hewlett set out to replicate. She developed a specialised process incorporating ultraviolet reactive elements into alcohol ink paintings, building each piece so that it holds two images at once. The intention was never illustration of a scientific fact but the recreation of an experience, letting an audience encounter for themselves the signalling system that flowers have been broadcasting invisibly for far longer than people have been watching.
