Josef was born on September 30, 1958 in Neustadt an der Waldnaab. In 1987 he completed his degree in architecture with a focus on urban planning in Frankfurt am Main. After working in architectural offices and in the urban planning offices in Freising and Neu-Isenburg, he is currently working in the field of climate protection and energy transition. His current place of residence and social center is Mühlheim am Main, located directly in the greater Rhine-Main area. In its immediate vicinity are the cities of Frankfurt am Main, Offenbach, Darmstadt, Mainz and Wiesbaden.

Even as a child, he had a strong inclination towards art: as a schoolboy, he leafed through the art books of his grandfather, who worked as a painter and restorer. As a student, he began to paint and draw very keenly. Participation in various art courses at the adult education center provided an initial artistic basis.

This sentence by the art writer Wilhelm Heinse applies to the artist in three ways: it is the power of the "inner artistic urge" to practice art; it is the forces that have to be "invested" and finally the forces that are "released in the creative process". This artistic maxim of "Sturm und Drang" applies to his self-portrayal. With its protest against the absolute rule of reason and its emphasis on the emotional world, it corresponds to a large extent to his understanding of art.

The paintings, characterized as "surreal abstraction and at the same time abstract surrealism", present the viewer with a bizarre variety of geometric and organic forms and structures placed on different painting grounds. The objectivity of classic surrealism is deliberately avoided. The abstract compositional elements present in the works of art are characterized by formal references to organics and geometry. They give the works of art an independent surreal impression.

Participation in the Frankfurt art school with Irene Schuh in Frankfurt/Main, as well as the artistic exchange in the studio of Karen Robert-Pitts in Neu-Isenburg and, above all, participation in several painting and drawing courses at the Frankfurt Städelschule were formative and led to further artistic development.
