Yellow and Black Photography Quote (1).p

"In order to create something abstract, you have to know what is real or realistic to make it abstract.''

As an award-winning artist in publications, and works exhibited around the world; D.q. Nguyen has, in a matter of two and a half years, rededicated himself by submerging in realism and abstract.

I think I had a good break through in this painting. Flowing color bands that flow like a globe light stretch colors. This eventually forms a weird and scratchy representation of a face with swinging hair. My original intent through out this paint was to give a edgy not shaky but not still feel through mark making. This work is all by brush work. It gives a created by hand look. At times a polished look works but not in this case.

Due to his loss of previous works dating before 2019; misfortunes, personal issues, to even years of homelessness there are only a handful of paintings from late 1990's that are in private collections. However, whatever has happened he has redefined his works and passion.

This painting is all about 2020. This is my isolation painting with crazy events going on, covid 19, and history unraveling in front of my eyes. my play with the colors are cool to warm. This gives it a completing feel and complements the colors. This is how I used those colors to merge my images and then complete the subject

He continued to paint and draw significantly through those troubling times in the past and now paints in a wide range.

"You can't lose the magic when it comes to painting."

D.q. Nguyen's aesthetics are simple. It can be calculated, rational, and can at times be weighted by pure chance or accidental luck.

This was a good ground changing piece to me. In this if life imitates art then this is a piece of me that makes compete sense to me. I continued to use bouncing colors and marked shapers filled with color that that just layer surfaces of paint that eventually built a image. It was a guy running. He is smiling I don't know why. This is a perception of me that was pulled and molded until this image can about. I was runner semi smiling, crying laughing.

This symbolic painting is about my nephew when he is playing soccer. It came from two picture of him kicking a ball. I had saw there 2 picture of my brother son from a social profile. And when he jumps not in the physical world but in this abstract realm. What is unseen is movement of other dimensions. The light, the air the sounds become seen. Movement and motions I try flow. The everyday unseen that happens when he jumps and kicks a soccer ball. Similar to to a time I felt as a child.

He has painted realistically and everything that is somewhat abstract representational to just aggressive mark making that becomes a symbolic element.

“If you listen to an instrumental track, like EDM dance music, you get a feeling of the atmosphere. But when lyrics are added, it paints the picture more clearly and gives direction to what that song is about."

“After over twelve years of not producing works full time I reinvented my perception of realism all the way to pure abstract.”

His semi abstract to realistic painting has concrete subjects that deal with history, life, conscious to subconscious matters, perceptions of depth, space, bouncing color, forms and fields of color.

It Began In Africa 2020 | Oil

This is a use of collective images that has been arranged to fit together. All theses are images I photograph and combine to for these subjects. This one deals with the Africa's rich history. There are mask and ceremonial ones used for ritual reason dealing with life's extreme meaning and passing. The traditional patterned and secondary colors full of vibrancy is purely its cultural own. From this and Indian art I have always been a influence to me.

Throughout his works from 2019 and on; there has been a constant theme of playing with color that bounce back and forth from planes to eventually molding forms into images that deal with a subject.

This is a painting that deals with people that are neglected or there voice seems to be unheard. I chose black and white because it gives it a point black look. The gaze in his eyes are off a guy that's been through it. You don't know what in his head but you get an idea of what he is thinking. How did i get here, I'm still living in the past but see future. Its has hardened him and just by that look shows disparity.

He has over 25 five years of painting experience in oil. His passion is oil painting but for the upcoming years he continues to explore realism and abstract paintings using elements of printing, and mixed media.

This I consider pure abstract. I wanted to make this in an expressive way but in different add elements off color and depth to create motion and movement. It is layers of oil that constantly forces the eye to keep moving. However I added subtle and aggressive makes that almost create full form but not quite. This makes the eye to move around but interrupts you and makes your eye pause a bit before whirling around.

This is once again a heavily layered painting. Aggressive marks , splattered paint but this time I worked to painting until I was able to pull form and then eventually a female figure.

He forms colored pencils, acrylic, pastels, charcoal, spray paint and much more. Many of these mediums were made from past works and have yet to be seen on a wide scale.

Using mainly a pallet knife this is filled with textures of various greens, yellows, browns. All colors of nature. This was not a painting from an image landscape. It is a made up landscape using sever picture I combined to create my own. It has a flatness but a perceptive with view points and space. My intent was to give different views in one. First you seem to be looking down, strait ahead, and then up.

However, when technology advances, you have to accept what it becomes as an extension to your pallet. He has described in a podcast interview how realism and abstract are woven together.

This painting is a raw and aggressive style painting that deals with the idea of what a Vietnamese man is meant to be. Also surrounds masscult idea of a first generation Asian American. The idea of the Chinese box, hot sauce, and chopsticks are symbolic to Asian culture. However it gives you an inside look about being influenced by the Chinese and being separated from the Chinese occupation and identifying culture. Basically it is an artist view of myself and what that means as I perceive.

"I believe oil is the most complex and most unique form of painting.”
